The Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded over thirty years ago, on April 26, 1986, but the story of what actually happened has only gradually emerged. Higginbotham, a journalist who writes for The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and other publications, spent more than ten years tracking down letters, unpublished memoirs, and documents from recently declassified archives as well as interviewing a wide range of people involved in the accident and its aftermath. The result is both the most comprehensive account of the disaster to date-a book that presents the science, politics, and social history of the incident-and a chilling look at how propaganda, secrecy, and distortion can obscure facts, manipulate the truth, and endanger the entire world.
