This movie was criminally underrated. One of the best films ever made, and easily one of the best westerns.

PhoenixVax Of course, ive seen this movie many many times. I think it's by far my 2nd best movie of all my life. Very under rated and deep!
Yeah, absolutely. It is a shame that the movie was a flop (economically).
There must've been a lot lost from book to movie because I don't see Ford as a coward here. He had a distorted view of James that changed as he got to know him. He realized Jesse was a bad dude in a heap of trouble who needed to be put down. Maybe the book provides more ambiguity to that but the movie didn't for me. It's still a great film to me.
I think it would've been better if the film-makers understood the Ford character more fully. He got passed the fame and childish fascination to what needed to be done. That's not a coward.
The point of the film is that Ford was seen as a coward by people, but in reality he wasn't a coward. And the people perception distorces his own perception untill he begins to see himself as a real coward. Indeed he and his brother feel regret (and his brother kills himself). That's the power of Jesse's fame and fascination. Ford never truly passes them, even after killing Jesse.
wil brander You kind of missed the point of the book and subsequent film. The title is a paradox and speaks to our culture's perception of fame. This film is a deconstruction of our culture's issues on how we link crime and fame, create myths of heroism, and have an obsession with celebrity. Jesse James was a celebrity across the country during his life. The perception was he was a charismatic outlaw who stole from the rich and gave to the poor, when in reality he was a stone cold killer and thief who kept every cent he stole. The title of the book/film speaks to the irony of fame. Jesse James was a deplorable human being but was idolized during his life. Robert Ford was viewed as a coward by the masses for murdering Jesse but was nothing of the sort. Robert Ford was demonized for simply killing what many people viewed as a modern day hero/idol, when in fact he did the country a service by killing Jesse James.
Depends on what you’re grading as a coward. Putting down a bad man ain’t cowardly. But the way he did it speaks to why people called him a coward. He didn’t face Jesse. Shot him from behind when Jesse took his guns off. That seems cowardly, especially by the standards back then.
Bob Ford shot Jesse James for reward money after Jesse gave him food n shelter n work... If that isnt a coward, wat is...
@@gregorybarker8835 Jesse also shot Ed Miller in the back dude
