Hi guys, today I present on this channel a really complex but very spectacular object: a DIY coin counter that counts all the euro coins.
The project is very complex and complicated, I used arduino nano for counting the single coins and I used infrared sensors to detect each single coin.

The amount of "I don't have the correct tool, but I have *a* tool" that takes place in this video is staggering! Amazing craftsmanship when you've got so many limitations
The correct tool is... the one that gets the job done..lol
There is no such thing as the correct tool.
Ingenuity comes hand in hand with over complicating stuff for the sake of it😁.
I got a kick out of the 775 motor powered cut-off machine.
They always say: "A good craftsman never blames his tools"
I say: "A great craftsman makes his own tools!"
The idea with the transparent sorting mechanism from the laser cutter is genius. It looks like art and would be worth to be shown in a museum.
The bottom half doesn't even do anything really. All the sorting is done up top. It would be a little more elegant to incorporate the sorting into the laser cut section.
@@denniswoycheshen The sorting on SIZE is done on top, THEN the sorting on VALUE is done in the squiggly middle part. The bottom part just neatly stacks the coins.
@@Trenjeska sorry, in Canada the coins we use are different sizes, so there is no need to sort by value as well. :)
@@Trenjeska wait a minute, do you live somewhere where coins are the same size or something? The sorting is done first, the rest is just for show.
@@denniswoycheshen let's see your build then?
Beautiful project...as always! Thanks for sharing!
You could keep track of how many coins are in each stack instead of the total. You could also add load cells to keep track of each stack weight then when a user removes coins from the stack (as long as it knows the avg weight of each single coin, could easily be done with constants in the arduino program) then it could automatically update how many are left/total amount.
A small spring that Is attached to a bucket, every time a specific weight is reached it drops coins it will be enough to make a roll. This way you always have rolls in the count not uneven counts.
Doing it by weight would not work considering that coins pick up grime which can alter the weight. It just would not be accurate.
@@-_IT_-there should be a minimum weight, like if it's heavier than a pristine coin from the previous value, then it accounts for all the added grime. either way, it's totally possible to have a range, or even make predictions with formulas that account for variations in weight, especially since those variations are extremely small
@@-_IT_- That's why you take the average weight, doesn't need to the exact weight just a ball park number (something like +/- 10-15%). Also its not like the load cells will have exact result, there will be differences between each cell.
"The project is very complex and complicated" The not explaining how you do it really helps!
Excellent project 👍
This was amazing. I love the ingenuity going on here. A lot of thought has been put into this machine.
That is the weirdest and most impressive coin sorting machine I have ever seen 🙂 Well done!
You ain't seen nuthin yet. Behold no-moving-parts - - - czcams.com/video/vZaRgMOo-Ig/video.html
@@elye3701 You were impressed by the US (4 coin type) coin sorter that required constant help from the operator to stack the coins because it did not have a vibrator function. Where this machine works flawlessly sorting 8 types of coins with one (1) moving part and counts them as well.
Behold, I'm not impressed by this link.
@@kevinsellsit5584 I have used a kiosk coin machine at a Japanese supermarket. Just load in the coins. Collect the rejects and hand the receipt to customer service in exchange for a voucher. This adds too much bling. I bet there is no service manual to troubleshoot this in case of problems. What do you do in case the lights go out? 8 is just twice 4. There is nothing to limit you if you carve one yourself out of a piece of plank. What would impress me is a computer program that would, given a set of coins, control a milling machine to carve a suitable sorter. If you give me the machine above, I wouldn't take it. In fact you would have to pay me to take it. We have 5,10,20 and 50 denominations of coins. 1 is obsolete but you can still find them in the coin donation boxes. Then the central bank released a new set. So we have 9 denominations in total. Added to this you can find 10cents Singaporean, 100Baht and various Rupee coins with an occasional UK coin. In reality those of us helping to count the church collection face up to 16 sizes of coins. I don't think that machine above can handle this real world sample. An in-between size would enter the next bigger slot and get counted wrongly. Not even close and and no cigar. You have a low bar. I am not impressed.
Ótimo trabalho! Like sempre!!! 👏👏👏👏🇧🇷
Favoloso!
Awesome video, very well made and edited, no unneeded redundancy, perfect use of speedups and jump cuts , very nice POV and amazing project made with minimal tooling 10/10 👏I subscribed and Rang the bell 🛎
unneeded redundancy is my new favorite redundancy
"minimal tooling"
> boots up the laser cutter
Most coin sorting machines use a tear system with typicallt 1-5 cent category, 10-50cent category then €1 and 2 category.
This way the sorting can be split 3 ways two times.
The first sorting is typicallt with magnetic indukction, (simply by roaling past a magnet) second by width.
and? What's your point?
@@bsvenss2 This machine is better. Right OVER your head. Wow.
Isso é incrível! = It's incredible!
Amazing craftsmanship as always♥️😃
Veramente un bellissimo lavoro! Bravo Daniele!
Complimenti!
Looks like you had good fun on this project. Well done!
Well produced video. Amazing craftsmanship and creativity!
Nice machine👍 As idea for version 4.0: A mechanism to roll the right amount of coins in a package for the bank, maybe checked by weight like the bank does😊
Good job. 16:08 Oops, the coin is stuck.
Sir, from one engineer to another, you have some mad design skills!
Either you have too much time on your hands or that was too easy for you, whichever is more frightening. Brilliant and beautiful! Thank you!
Pazzesco che lavoro, complimenti
You have achieved perfection, Sir! Next project would be a coin generator...
That is incredibly satisfying to watch. Great work!
90 minuti d'applausi!! 😮👌
Fantastico e strabiliante come sempre!
Cool work !
Just two things want to comment :
- Future Coin edge design change (non cicular)
- Non-euro coin (Else handling)
You are amazing you should think about putting out projects for kids to do and learn about electronics. We need more of you in this world for sure... Simply amazing skills and craftsmanship... I can't say enough great things about you!!
This is a great coun machine. I really love it! The only thing missing from the video is how you get the coins out. That would be pretty cool to see.
Actually you can't. The coins are lost forever. Unless the end section is open at the front...
very satisfying to watch and am sure it's even more when building.
Interesting and cool to watch it work.
I like your mini chop saw at 14:40 do you have plans for how you made it?
Great ingenuity and beautifull too !
That custom saw using a cut off wheel blade is amazing!
Un GENIO!!!! Non c’è altro da aggiungere.
Very spectacular indeed !!
Waw, very nice and exhaustive work. But your patience is highly appreciated, nice project.
Meticulous work, and a joy to watch!
Watching you work is wonderful. Great stuff, and hello from your friends in Australia! :)
It will either last a week or the grandkids will marvel at paps's genius !
A M A Z I N G ! Bravo!
Sono a dir poco impressionato. Veramente bella. Rimarreri tutto il giorno a guardarla.
Wow, that was really impressive!
Even with words, this video was fun to watch. Thank you.
Excellent machine. You are the master
Spettacolare, Daniele !!
11:20 classic example of how to make things complicated. BTW love your video.
That's absolutely fantastic. Thank you for making this :-)
Rube Goldberg would be proud. Awesome build.
This is awesome. When time is not an issue...
Very interesting! Nice job!👍
Very well done!
Complimenti!! Come sempre insuperabile, particolari curatissimi e precisi, ti invidio😂
no, neanche in qualche giorno 😣
After all that amazing precision work the amount labels were just stuck on and don't line up! My OCD hurts 😱😱
He could have done it with the laser CNC that he cut those cool coin roller coasters with.
BRAVO !
Un bello lavoro.Greetings from Toronto .
Watching my friend full support❤👋👍
solo una parola....GENIO!!!
SIr thats really awesome job
It's really cool! For continue need create a packaging-mashine for sorted coins and creatу an own bank. :)
You are super innovator!!!!!
Danny Tenaglia is an amazing DJ. Famous the world over.
Che mostro che sei. Non so che altro dire. Complimenti
100 Thumbs Up cool Project
Wow....sei un Genio !! 🤓
I hope you will get 1 million soon
Complimenti 👍👍
Awesome. I like it ❤👍🏻.
So nice!
Nice job...cool project
It looks great, especially when considering it's build with very basic tools. An inspiration.
The machine looks and works great and the video was fun to watch, but I don't consider a laser cutting machine as a BASIC tool. For me basic tools are those which are not electrically powered
Are you using interrupts for the sensors? or are you just checking them individually in a loop?
You could add another layer just after the coins are sorted for size to weigh the coin and if it is not right then reject it.
I was not quite sure from just looking how coins get into the right level of the reorder mechanism so they come out in order of value?
Very interesting project!
superb, thank you for the inspiring video
Fun project if you have an abundance of specialized tools.
Is this just a hobby you have or are you doing this for a living?
What did you learn to gain the skills you have to build something like this. I'm still pretty young, but what you're doing is inspiring to me
Just a few things.
1 I think a little bit faster time-laps would be a bit better.
2. A 3D print of this design would be sweet.
3. 3D modeling this design would be very interesting challenge. Good video over all.
Legacy system at the time of build xD nevertheless impressing 👏
amazing video ! Really nice the copyright in the background I like it ! (it could be even more visible)
Detto ciò, Daniele Tartaglia top maker in assoluto!
Hi, incredible video!! What's the white and black material that slides more than the wood?
