Seems like it could be really fun if it was rewritten or house ruled to make each dive an incan-gold style push-your-luck. Each player decides after each gem pulled from the bag if they'll keep diving or keep what they've got and surface. The ability to plan and mitigate monsters/oxygen gives it a touch more... depth.
I'll probably pick it up with this in mind since incan gold is my niece's favorite game.

I know the rules over view isn't comprehensive, but the ability to split movement between boats is critical and you can't rush into a bonus spot. I can certainly understand the feeling of half a game. I really enjoyed it, but wanted Deep Blue to be deeper (hur hur) and about 1 hour longer. Just love the theme so much. In my 2 plays, I was dive leader only once each game. In the first game, I picked black-black (with the double pull card) failed dive. In the second game, I pulled blue-blue, failed dive. I ended up winning the second game with a score of 93, 5 players and second place was 81. What I learned is that you either (80/20) buy cards or lead dives. Optimizing movement and timing with other players action choices was the key to victory. It ended up being more tactical and cut throat than I expected. I couldn't relax and enjoy the theme as much as I wanted to, but it was still a really solid 1 hour game. The cards that change the rules game to game REALLY change the game. To that point, we said we would never play the one that involved pulling 2 cubes at a time again. It made people too risk adverse.

I'm relieved that Tom is more honest in his reviews, as opposed to only a couple of years ago, when he didn't want to say anything bad for fear of losing a single viewer. Glad for the honest review, not getting this game now. Was on the fence anyways.

Hi. If the diver make the dive bring 2 purple 🟣 gems out of bag and as player with ship in the tile of dive I play 2 sailors cards of purple 🟣 gems and the dive leader will take a 3rd purple gem out of bag , then at the end of dive how much VP points I gain with 2 cards i played for the dive...?!

If we do "Rest" action when we have at least 1 card in our hand, we shuffle the cards and get 3 cards in our hand. The rest of the cards stay in Discard Pile or create Deck Pile ...?!

I found the answer about Rest... Rest is an action and we choose to do it if we want cards from discard pile back to our hand we shuffle the cards at discard pile and we draw 3 cards if the pile has less than 3 we get all of them in our hands

As a game designer, I totally see the upset in this game.
Personally, I'd tweak the game so it was more like the push your luck in Quacks of Quedlinburg.
Give each player their own bag, with their own jems. Let them make their own decisions.
As gamers, we want to play the game. Not let the game play us

The fact that you already knows how to recognize when you disagree with Tom, is already something that you may take credit for... Not like others whom take his words as if it were their own taste...
Taking things with a grain of salt and some doubt is always better then a blind agreement.
Plus, try before you buy, if possible, is always the best choice for any gamer out there, to get experienced and judge a game on his own.

Wow what happened?? We gelled so well on Vindication but then you enjoyed Pipeline and now this? 😂
I originally gave it 8, prob closer to 7 now. But I liked it fine. And I think you hit it where you said some like the "others press my luck" aspect.
With the games I've played, it was fun to try and egg people on to draw more gems or to back out when you got a good deal. Plus there would be plenty of banter afterwards. But I get that as a result this makes it a fragile game and some won't be fans of that.
My only main complaint was the lack of player scaling which I'm surprised you didn't mention. This is a 4-5 player game really with 2-3 being too open water.

    • @Punko1969

It seems like it could be entertaining to watch someone press the divers' luck too far and bust, resulting in being berated by those who lost out. You also get the chance to be the one pushing everyone's luck when you start a dive, correct? I think it looks pretty fun, but my backlog is such that I probably won't get around to picking it up until I see it at a decent sale price next year.

Never was the biggest fan of DoW to begin with. 5 Tribes is fine, and I had some memorable experiences with SoC, but else? "It feels like playing to long, which is odd, because it just plays about an hour" is the perfect description in my opinion for TtR. Also the handmanaging mechanism from Concordia and Gloomhaven dumbed down, so that you can only pick up 3 cards, so no incentive to chain your cards in the best way to minimize the taking of the less exciting rest action? The defending from busting (think Port Royal) can be done equal save once you really would bust, you don't have to make the decision in advance to remove the gem. And while the production is pretty, I wouldn't call it stellar, if they "cut corners" (or actually didn't) in card quality. Even worse: if an insert force me to fiddly stack tokens to fit them in, I would definitely rather litter it and use zip bags instead. Game looks like a hard pass to me, but as I said, I was never to crazy about DoW.

For what it’s worth, I’ve played the game as well and had much the same reaction as Tom. In fact, I remember specifically saying, “This is a more complicated, less fun version of Incan Gold.” In the game I played, I completed the most dives of anyone and very quickly got to the point where I felt bad taking the dive action because I was forcing everyone to sit around and watch me while I played the game. I actually didn’t even like the card-buying aspect because, since you have to take a whole turn to redraw cards and can only get 3 of them back each time, the game actually punishes you for buying more cards. Just an unpleasant experience from start to finish for me.
