Why printing photos can make you a better photographer.

- I think printing photos, either with an ink jet printer or in the darkroom can make you a better photographer. Printing is the final step in photography we tend to forget about. I take you through how I use printing in my work, and how I make a test print for a giant print I will be making soon.

Todd is a real gift to photographers. I assisted him back in the late 1990’s when I was getting started, and learned the focus and drive it required to succeed. It took me to NY to work with his friend, Heinz Kluetmeier of Sports Illustrated and on to many others and a brief career of a few years shooting editorial. I’m forever grateful.
Thanks Jay, I’ve never met anyone with more commitment than you. I knew you would succeed at anything!✌️
Printing is the last step of the photographic process. Photos were created to be printed, not stored on HDs. I find inbeliveable that nowadays many people don't care picking their negatives from labs, they just want the scans. Shoot digital and save money :)
I'm more into darkroom printing, but your advice is a very valuable one. No matter the method, print and look at it. See what the image tells you after a year. That's great!
A print is still the best! ;-)
Thank you. I am really getting joy printing my own photos. I’m actually being able to see where I can get better.
For sure. That’s great to hear.
I love prints!? BUT, seeing and listening to the description of what is involved to make a good print shows how cumbersome and tedious the process of making an inkjet print really is.
The technology gets in the way of the artistic side of image creation.
I’ve printed for years with the inkjet process and with wet darkroom process.
Wet darkroom is much more direct than digital inkjet printing.
My feeling is that printing is a skill best left to professional printmakers. Photographers have to be able to concentrate on the images they wish to create.
Photography is a second or third tier art form compared to painting, drawing, sculpture and architecture for the simple reason that photography is such an indirect process.
If you want to be a great photographer look at great paintings - don’t waste time messing around with computers technology.
Cartier-Bresson sent his work out to be printed.
Thank you for showing us this process.
Thanks for watching.
Couldn't agree more. So nice to see a real living photographer producing informative videos. The difference between those that are photographers and those that use it as a vehicle for content is huge !
Many thanks! 🙏
I started film photography about a year ago and finally printed some of my photos from travel and it’s brought me so much joy. Definitely want to eventually invest into my own printer. It seems like a great investment if I plan to sell prints
Great to hear. Yes for sure, if you plan on selling prints it’s great to print your own.
Great discussion , Todd. One of the main reasons I started shooting film again . To slow down , create and print . Thanks KB
Nice!
Great video, Todd. l've always said a photo is not a photo until it's printed.
I use the same printer, they're very good quality and reliable.
Printing has always put a smile on my face, to hold the image is such a treat...if you are in the US, give Red River papers a chance they produce wonderful paper and a good price. I use them with my Canon Pro 10 and they work great.
Yes I still love printing. I have heard some wonderful things about Red River papers, I would love to try some out. I am actually going to be in the U.S. in 3 weeks, IO should see if I can hunt some up.
Gosh, I’d love to have that print. It is so perfect.
Thank you for the great video and advice! It's excellent and so helpful!
Thanks so much for watching, more to come on printing!
I just printed from a negative of an image that I took in spring of 2000 photography class. The last time I saw this image was in 2000 when I turned it in as part of my portfolio... that was 22 years ago. Its amazing that I can take something from that long ago and make another original with it. And with a digital shot I can accidentally lose it or delete it. Printing makes me look at my work in a very different way besides just a bunch of pixels on a screen.
Yes, great to hear!
Yes to print… Always print! Thank you Todd and keep up the informative work…
Will do, thanks!
I’ve been listening to _several_ videos looking for information on the qualitative difference between viewing on a screen versus on paper and yours Is the first one that’s pointed out that depth is richer in a print than on the screen 🤯 so thanks for that
Yes much richer and more depth, cheers.
Thanks, it is so helpful having the step by step on the printer /computer set up. I wish more youtubers would follow your example. Personally, speaking you can't dumb it down enough for me. Always enjoy your work.
Thanks, I find sometimes just basic information goes a long way. ;-)
Superb Todd. Happy new year Todd. It’s funny you put this video up. I was just reviewing photos for print today and I fully agree with the lost generation of photos. Again Todd wonderful video. 👏
Happy New Year! Thanks so much😉🍾
This was great. Thank you.
You’re welcome. 😉
Great video Todd…very inspirational. I’m in the process of picking a printer soon and start printing…I agree the final result is magical! Thanks for sharing. Be safe. Cheers..
Good luck you’ll like it.
Thank you, very motivational and I intend to take your advice and get a few nice prints done this coming year.
Thanks for watching.
Finally got my darkroom setup! Excited to start printing myself! Love the video as always friend:)
Hope you enjoy it!
Great session Todd!
Hey thank you, Happy New Year!
I have stacks of 'work' prints of film images I use for zine layout and just overall seeing how they print. Your video reminded me I had a pack of 4x6 paper that came with an ink order and I had no idea of what I was going to do with it. But my wife and I just went through last year's images and picked out our favorite 25 (I did both digital and film) and now I'm using up some of this paper to make prints, so thanks for the idea and inspiration. Looking forward to seeing your big prints.
👍👍
excellent video todd, always interesting to hear the things you pass onto us. I do occasionally print 5x7 prints to see how they look on paper before sending them out to a professional lab. at 78 years young printing images myself is way beyond me and the lab person I use is just super skilled. in my younger years I had no time for developing printing skills so I was heavily dependent on several labs in toronto where I spent my business years. thx again for sharing all that you share with us. zen billings.
Thank you, that is also a great way, just to make a small 5x7 and then see if you want to make a larger print. Labs in Toronto are really good, I do work with TIW myself.
Todd, just found your video and loved it. Thanks so much for producing it. I enjoy your easy style. It makes it a pleasure to watch and learn.
About 20 years ago I had a cheap Hewlett Packard ink jet printer that used so much ink just setting itself up each time I switched it on. It also used a lot of ink going through its routine of frequently unblocking jets. These together with the complexity of the innumerable number of unfathomable printer settings and variables put me off photo printing. Your video is an inspiration to me so I think I should take your advice and try again with the modern technology. Subbed! Greetings from 🇬🇧.
Oh those old printers were terrible! I had the first version of the 17” Epson printer and it did the same thing, so frustrating. My new ones though works flawlessly. In over a year I have never had to power clean to unblock the nozzles and waste ink.
I 100% agree with you. I noticed the way I can magically make my images look on Instagram, Flickr so on and so forth is not quite the same when I'm looking at my finished darkroom print. I need to work on my darkroom skills, it's my one of my goals in 2023. I really enjoy working in the darkroom and I didn't realize it until the last few months. Maybe someday I can become a master printer.
I still love darkroom prints, they are still magical!
Now I need a printer haha. Great video as always, thanks.
It never ends!😉
Excellent! Thank you! Will you be sharing a vid about the large prints that you will be showing?
Yes, going to do a video about the entire process. Stay tuned.
Hello Todd , I wish you a happy new year . thanks for the video which I found interesting as usual , I 've probably missed it, I would like to ask you which is the minimum size of the file you need in order to make a print - and probably the size of the file changes depending on formats. - thank you
Yes for sure, you can only print so big depending on your file size. A good rule of thumb to start at is say you want to make an 8x10 print, the size of the photo would have to be at least 8x10 and at 200 dpi. Anything smaller and the image will start to fall apart. I try and print at 300 dpi almost always. Also if you go to a lab, they will have minimum sizes for the files to print.
Hi Todd
Trev from Oz.
Happy New Year and I hope 2023 is better for all of us!
Excellent video. I will confess to watching it twice, then a third time, where I had my eyes closed and only listened to the commentary.
You raise several points for discussion, and these are not in any specific order.
. the difference between computer to print: i.e RGB to CMYK
. shooting deliberately as opposed to "happy snaps"
. computer drives
losing one (been there)
who can watch (my study is tiny)
. print is the final product and storyboarding is critical to the success of the final outcome
. papers are critical to the end result
One question I do have is when you send a print off for a larger print, can you set the parameters, i.e paper type exposure etc
Regards
Trev
Hi thanks for watching. Yes when you send a photo off you need to send the proper parameters for the print size so the lab can print the proper size you require. Happy New Year.
Hey I m new to printing.. I normally take photos on white background.. how do u check normally if not clipping highlights before sending to print.
Thank you for making this video. I just had to remove my epson 4900 from service. Been looking at t he P900 and waiting on a Canon upgrade from the pro 2000 to decide on a new model. Love printing, it's what it's all about.
After a year I've had zero issues with the P900. I have never used the Canon printers so I really can't comment, except I have seen some photos from them and they too look great. Good luck.
@@toddkorolphoto My 4900 had a "fatal error" that required a new print head that cost more than the printer to get replaced. It was a maintenance issue the 8 years I owned it. Nozzle clogs were a constant headache. I wound up wasting more ink clearing clogs than making prints.
@@steveh1273 oh yeah, I had a 4800 and clogged nozzle heads drove me insane. The P900 has had no if those issues after a year of use.
@@toddkorolphoto Thank you for that info, I'll keep that in mind. I swore I'd never buy another Epson, I may change my mind now.
@@steveh1273 I said the exact same thing, I got a deal on this one, it has been good and apparently they have those issues worked out.
Enjoyed your information provided here. Let's suppose, for example, that you were now going to mount & mat your 13x19 print. What would be your choice of mounting board, and how would you mount the print to that board? I always enjoy your videos very much, and look forward to each one you post.
Thank you, check this out. www.shutterbug.com/content/printing-presentation-mounting-matting-and-framing-inkjet-prints-tips-techniques-digital-pri
Hi Todd, great topic. I print up to 17x22 ,on the good old 3800 ,still chugging away , I do my own matting but am very curious on your take for how to mount and present large prints. I have done canvas stretched for larger but much prefer the fine art papers but am at a loss how to mount and present them in very large sizes I am hoping you may cover this in your video. Thanks
My 3800 did after much use last year, I replaced it with the P900. I came across a great article on just that, a to of answers here. www.shutterbug.com/content/printing-presentation-mounting-matting-and-framing-inkjet-prints-tips-techniques-digital-pri
Has anybody told you that you look like Joe Pesci? I've watched the whole video and love the content but my mind can't unsee it! haha
I like Joe Pesci too.
Canon Pro 1000 hands down.
Yes they're good printers.
Todd Thank you for your video. Could you please tell me the name of the inkpress paper you use for your 5x7 work photographs and the source. Thank you Dan
I just use the Inkpress Luster, it works great, and it's a really good price. You can get it from B&H, Amazon or The Camera Store here in Canada. www.inkpresspaper.com/profiles.asp?PaperID=40
Very nice video. I personally would be interested in more print related content. Todd, interested to know why you don't use Epson B&W mode...is there difficulty in finding a print service that will use the mode/reproduce your settings?
I have found I have to play around a little more own the b&w mode. I like to get the print exactly how I want it in photoshop, and using this technique gets me the print I want. But I do know of people that have had great success with the b&w mode.
Is there any reason to do purely optical darkroom printing anymore?
Darkroom prints still have a great organic look to them. And collectors value them more as well.
Do you do your own matting and framing?
I do not, the FrameShop is where I get all my framing done, Kevin the owner frames for galleries and museums around the world, he is the best.
Wich brand 5x7 paper is it? It is realy nice to see 😊
I just use the Inkpress Luster 5x7. It's very affordable and looks great.
@@toddkorolphoto thnx for message, it looks realy great
Todd, I've got an off topic question: are we going to see MY TOP PHOTOGRAPHY BOOKS of 2022 video? I just rewatched your Top Photography Books of 2021 and thought I'd ask. Дякую! 🇺🇦
Don't think it will happen this year, I had a really slow year of collecting new books, for numerous reasons. :-(
6:26 is rather jarring how it pops and then hisses during the transitions.
Yeah hit my mic with my hand :-(
What Lab do you use?
I now develop all of my own film, colour and b&w.

Great vid.
Thanks Elvis😉
