I season and cook on several new Blackstone Griddles each month. I've learned much about griddle seasoning over the years. Most importantly, I learned that many people try to overcomplicate the process. If you just got a brand new Blackstone Griddle and are wondering what the easiest and most-tried method of seasoning is...you've come to the right place!

Lastly, griddles are fun. I really enjoy griddling...I mean, look at my channel! However, I just want you to know something. When I say, praise the Lord at the end of my videos. It's not just a figure of speech. I give all glory for my everything in my life to my Lord and saviour Jesus Chris. He rescued me from the grave. He picked me up from the pit of darkness I was in. He has given me eternal life and he wants to do the same for you.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Do it today, my friends. Put your trust in Jesus. Trust him. Let him guide your life...and your eternity.

So refreshing seeing someone not over complicate this simple process!
Thank YOU for watching!
That helps me a lot thanks for your videos 🙏👍
I've had my 36" (old front grease trap model ☹) for 6 years in my gazebo here in Wisconsin. Anybody hesitating to buy one, DON'T! They don't wear out, the burners are protected from the cooking service. I've probably gone thru 40-50 twenty lb gas tanks on it, and not a flaw in it yet! I will be getting the new one with the air fryer, this one will either be gifted to someone less fortunate than myself, or moved to my kitchen. The breakfasts it makes are unbelievable. You can serve 10 people hot pancakes at the same time! Hashbrowns in the corner, bacon on the left eggs in the middle. Dip bread in the bacon grease and throw your bread on there and you'll have perfect toast.
There's nothing like the smell of onions and peppers grilling in butter for chicken fajitas. Throw the tortillas on to soften them up.
You captured it. The grill is to me a waste and too limited.
You are absolutely right, Todd. A few months back, my neighbor gave me a 36" Blackstone that had been sitting on his back deck for God knows how long. It was rusted pretty badly and looked horrible. I simply heated it up, applied oils and got a grill brick to remove the rust. Took me about an hour. I then wiped away all of the rust residue and heated it up again. I applied a few coat of INEXPENSIVE .EVERYDAY cooking oil and began seasoning it. I use this griddle EVERYDAY in my mobile food business in Kentucky. It works and performs fine!
Thank you for this video. I’m getting my first blackstone and have anxiety around the work it takes vs a traditional griddle. Loved the down to earth simplicity of this video.
I am a retired engineer & senior scientist therefore, I whole heartedly agree with you. Seasoning any metal griddle is not rocket science! Great job young man!
Just got mine from Amazon today! Will unpack and season this weekend! Thanks for this great "KISS" first time seasoning method! Have a great weekend everyone!
I've had my eye on these for almost a year now. And suprise my freaking awesome wife got my the 36"one for Christmas with some accessories!! I'm so excited!! Have enjoyed all your video's!! Keep it up!!
Matt - That is sooooooooo cool! Congrats on your new griddle!
You have a good woman!
My wife got me a 8" shun chefs knife!
For those that don’t know, Shun knives are hand made Japanese knives. It was so sharp when I got it you could literally shave your face with it. (If you’re brave enough.)
I already had a 36” Blackstone.
Just got my husband one for Father’s Day. He’s so excited 😆
You've got some more good wife dude.
@@sslukerable good women like you keep some of us goin. Much appreciation sent your way. Take care....of him. 😉
Bought my 36" Blackstone Griddle today. Will be assembling & seasoning it tomorrow with the help of this video!
Hi Ed - Congrats on your new griddle! I appreciate you watching. God bless!
A year later…. How has the grill treated you? Did you season it well?

I just finished seasoning my new grill and worked perfect. I put 5 coats on with vegetable oil because thats what I had. Then I did my first cook with sausage, onions and potatoes just to get the flavor going on the grill. They tasted amazing. Thanks for making it so simple and straight forward. Yay. I’m so excited to get grilling.
Bought my husband the 28" griddle for Father's Day, was going to season it for him (he's out of town this year), but I think he will have fun doing it himself. Can't wait for the first stir fry dinner on it!
Just got my dad one of these for his birthday. We cook together all the time. I’ve cooked on them before but never owned one. I like your style. Subscribed.
Just got my 36" Blackstone a month ago and so far it's amazing. Such good food comes off the Blackstone. I just found your channel looking at other people cooking on their griddles...thumbs up and subscribed.
I don’t know why this was in my recommendation but it was satisfying to watch.
I just seasoned mine for the first time. I can’t wait to make breakfast.
Hi Todd, great video. I just ordered the new 36” griddle with the rear grease management system. I got the stainless steel version and dropped your name....They gave me 10% off! Can’t wait till I get to season my griddle top in 10 days or so. Thanks again for you instructional videos and knowledge.
Thank you Todd! I just received a Blackstone for my birthday. Your videos are outstanding. I have spent hours already watching your videos.
Thanks for the straight forward info! I love my 22" Blackstone!!!
Thank you for all of the information as I am a first time griddle owner
Thanks for watching, John! Please subscribe as I have over 700 videos, mostly with the Blackstone Griddle. I also have a weekly show over on Blackstone's channel. God bless!
I did the same thing with my Nexgrill Infrared which has these stainless steel plates and after I got done I added some lard and used some sweet vidalia onions. The seasoning has worked extremely well.
I purchased my griddle about a month ago and I was sent the new rear grease one from Amazon and I must say I was shocked and I love it! I must have watched all your videos on it....Now to order my hardtop cover!
Perfect timing. My new griddle is coming next Tuesday so now I am ready season it. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for watching. Enjoy that new griddle!!!!
I have had mine for 1 year, 4 burner 36". I seasoned the thing, and it's awesome. It's a shiny black now, which took a few months to get there.
Rock on! It's so easy. I'm always a bit puzzled when people send messages saying, "I just can't figure out how to season mine." I'm glad you figured it out and are enjoying your griddle. Thanks for watching & God bless!
@@praisehisawesomename so basically what your saying is the blackstone brand seasoning and conditioner is just a gimmick?
Cheers Todd
So glad I found you going camping for a week out of brand-new Blackstone griddle you hit the button what stressing over seasoning now I am confident I need to prepare my grill hours before my grilling begins thank you kind sir
Just ordered a grill. I love the instruction of "seasoning". I'll make sure I do this once it arrives. Thanks.
I worked at a bbq store that sold high end smokers , grills, griddles. We had the oil nazis come in all the time and try to tell us this bullshit. Weather we asked them or not they were going to tell us . Lol. My coworker told a guy flat out he was completely full of shit. And yes used those exact words. Classic. He didn’t even lose his job. I liked my time there. Lol.
Oil the fucking grille lol
Just got one from Santa! Can’t wait to get started with it!
Just got my 22" Adventure Ready Blackstone today! So stoked to start working with it!
Just ordered the 36" Blackstne griddle. Can't wait to start cooking on it. Thanks for the starting info.
I just ordered my 36 inch Blackstone griddle. I am looking forward to trying all your recipes. Thank you for the discount.
Manuel - That's exciting! I can't wait for you to get your new griddle and start griddling!!! Thanks for using my referral link and code. Have a great week!
Just got my 28" yesterday and I'm sooo hyped to use it! I seasoned it this morning and plan on doing burgers tonight. This was so easy to assemble and I really like the new dual igniters and "rear grease management system." :)
You're gonna wish you got the 36 inch just saying 🤣
Got my new Blackstone grill today. Seasoned it as you describe in this video and it worked out great.
I love the griddle and with it, the grilled tubers, vege and the different cuts of heavenly grilled meat that my neighbor prepares esp. during weekends. Am planning to buy one soon.
After about 2-3 coats of oil, cut an onion in half and scrape your griddle with an onion. It will give it a phenomenal aroma.
Thank you sir we have two Blackstones love them
Wanted one for quite some time. In laws got me one for Christmas. Looking forward to using this. I love to cook
Thanks. I'm getting one for Christmas and was about to send it back because I thought it was going to be too difficult to maintain. I think I will keep it after watching your video.
The blackstone griddle caught my eye in another cooking video I was watching so I googled it just for fun. Couldn't believe how affordable they are, we will definitely replace our very budget traditional LP grill with one of these when it comes time. I used to be a short order cook and miss the flat top grilling. Thanks for the educational and to the point video!
@Tristan Timothy scumbag
I just bought a new griddle and seasoned it but didn't heat it up first. So I'm really glad I watch this. Thanks bro
I did the same thing
Ordered mine today. Getting it next week. Great advice. Thanks.
Just bought one tonight. Can't wait to start seasoning. Thanks for "how to". Cheers!
Avocado oil has high burn/smoke point of 500 degrees therefore doesn’t turn as toxic as other oils. I used to use other oils too but since start seeing this on the store shelves and learned about its heat resistance figured why not .
When I got my 22 inch Blackstone I only seasoned it once and started cooking on it and it. You are right Todd, you have to cook on it to get it black.
Thank you for watching!
I seasoned mine once after i got it....but i was impatient and wanted to cook right away....my eggs got stuck haha...pretty messy....now 1 week later i cleaned everything up and the griddle is burning for over 1h already while I'm enjoying my beer and this beautiful morning in Sweden. Now the surface is to 90% black and I'm sure there will be no more sticking issues what so ever. Btw....i used canola oil haha....thank you for this video and your time!
Thanks for the intel, I am seasoning my new to me black stone right now. It was given to me by my Brother in Law, it was a gift to him and he never used it. It still has the packing grease on it. I washed it off and am going to turn it on now! Happy Fathers day!
Griddling for Dummies like me right here! Thanks for the great and easy instructions! Puts my fears to rest and I cannot wait to season and fire up my griddle!
Thanks Todd, awesome!
With a degree in Oil Technology, I would recommend 3.14 layers of oil for that perfert base layer! Thanks Todd!

Bought my Blackstone 36" 3,4 years ago still loving it
Thank you Todd that was a great video. Appreciate all your videos!!!
Love that move you made at the end, reminds me of a Japanese Hibachi Chef, ever seen one of those guys in action? They work magic with their cooking tools!
Once I seen the chorizo con wevos .I respected that man just a bit more
Did u want the chorizo or the huevo
Just did the seasoning on my new 36 inch Blackstone !! Gonna cook up some ribeyes tonight! Thanks for the info and keep up the great videos !
Todd Toven definitely makes Griddles great Again! Thank You So Much for this Video! We a buying the 36” Griddle with the new build of our New Home!

Fast forward to minute mark 2:20, you’re welcome
Todd I receive my Grill in a few days I cant wait to cook on it.... Chicken Fajitas is going to be the 1st meal...Great video
Rich. I know this is a little late. My wife and I were camping and noticed a fellow camper using a black stone. I bought one and the very first thing I made on mine was stir fry. The entire surface was covered with rice. I have cooked anything and dang near everything on this. I will never buy a grill again. lol. If you take care of it then it will make the best food for you.
Thank you for infos about seasoning new black stone griddle. I'll be using mine soon.
Thank-you very much, Going to season mine today after UPS delivers
While you don't NEED to use a specific oil, it has been proven that certain oils (typically from seeds) create a harder and more durable polymerization on the steel. So there is a benefit. But like Todd said, if you use the blackstone and use oil in your cooking, you won't really have to worry about losing your seasoning.
Good vid Todd. That clears it up. Thanks......oh yeah nice move at 6:30
Thanks for watching, Mark! Thanks for laughing with me!

Getting my 36 Blackstone tomorrow! Thanks for the great video brother!
Got a 28" today....came on here to learn a few tricks. Thanks for the info on the seasoning. I re-season my cast iron after every use......will probably do the same for this.
Dude, I lost it at "The Rear Grease Management System" ! too good
Thanks for "cleaning" up this seasoning stuff.
Fr to much shit on CZcams
Got my new 22” 3 weeks ago, seasoned it with “yes” BACON” 🥓. Love it
Ordered a blackstone 36 inch yesterday can’t wait to start cooking with it. Great video with great advice for getting started on the griddle, and for salvation 👍🏼. I like it, great job and God bless
Hi Jeremy. I'm glad you found my videos. Thank you for watching! I'm excited for you to receive your new griddle as well. Yes, God is good! He saved me 22 years ago and it has been an adventure ever since. All glory & thanks for my life to the Lord!! Thanks again for watching & for praising Him with me!
That’s awesome Todd! What a great witness. There is no telling how many people have read those verses for the first time ever in there lives on your video comment section.
Thank God. A reasonable person, a reasonable product specialist with a reasonable explanation. Thanks!
Keep it up and you'll be griddling at Benihana.
Good no nonsense info Todd. Watch those griddle moves we need you healthy.
LOL - I know, I'm not a spring chicken anymore either. Maybe I should just stick to creating recipes...LESS DANGEROUS!! Thanks for watching :)
Todd Toven how is the taste of chicken when you grill it on the blackstone? I’m thinking of making the switch from the grill to the griddle but I’m afraid that the griddle won’t give me that smoky grilled chicken taste that my family loves.
nice no nonsense presentation...good job Tod! Thank you...
Mine arrived today! Two days early! Thanks for the great videos!
This video took the fear and anxiety out of seasoning my Blackstone grill, way to go Todd!
Long time viewer first time poster. Just got my Blackstone today and followed your instructions to the letter and it worked to perfection. Thanks for all you do. Our first meal was a bit on the “I’ll do it better next time” - but that had nothing to do with you - just my first time. Be blessed! Ecclesiastes 9:7.
Glad I found your channel! I just got my griddle and have been intimidated by all of the different opinions on seasoning. This made me feel much better! Subscribed!!!
Hi, David. Thanks for subscribing. I appreciate it. I've been cooking on Blackstone Griddles for going on 7 years. I seasoned my first one with vegetable or canola (I forget oil) oil. I have since seasoned probably close to 100 Blackstone around the country with olive, canola, or vegetable oil. I know folks who have used flaxseed and liked it while I've met many folks on the road this year who told me they used flaxseed and greatly regretted it. I've talked to folks who say they have only seasoned with lard and bacon grease while one person told me that seasoning with bacon grease is the worst thing you can do. I think it comes down to personal preference to some extent. It can sound intimidating if you've never done it. Go with olive, canola, or vegetable oil and you'll be fine. Here's an impromptu seasoning video I did on the road in Vegas earlier this year. The background audio is a bit loud but you can again see how easy it is: czcams.com/video/PoLjAaOt4s4/video.html
Thanks for watching & God bless.
Just ordered mine THANK YOU!!
Yes Todd! I’m definitely on your side. Black licorice is definitely what’s needed to properly season your Blackstone griddle. 😂 #kneeslapper
I'm contacting NASA on how to properly season my griddle.
What was the response
@@foty8679 no response. They currently took off to Mars a few days ago.
The response was out of this world right?
This is how I feel right now. As a new griddle owner, I feel like there are about 4,000,000 ways to season a griddle.
3 years old and now the cooktop is peeling above the orange knobs. The heat treat I guess idk? I did the NG conversion and now it's smoking hot all over yeehaw
Just bought a Blackstone griddle 36 inch for my wife’s birthday. Thanks for the advise on how to season the griddle surface. Thank you for being a light for Jesus.
Never had time in my life to learn how to grill. Been eyeballing a Blackstone Griddle for a while since I retired and last spring purchased one. I am far from being a griddle master but I am a griddle user and love it. Easy to use, easy to clean. I cook and before everyone gets set down to eat, I have it cleaned. Not a job at all. I have no idea why people shy away from cleaning after every use. I stumbled across your video and this is what I been looking for. A no nonsence guide to using my Blackstone. Thank you!!
Hi, Rick - Thanks for watching! I'm glad you are enjoying your griddle! I am in agreement with you 100%. Try not to stumble on to the floor laughing at this. I just saw a comment from a user, "Blackstone Griddles are junk. It takes hours to clean them." I think that some people are better off just cooking chicken nuggets in microwave ovens for the rest of their lives, don't you? Thanks again for watching. Have a Merry Christmas!
I used to have a taco cart, I used oil and a half an onion that's it ,your absolutely right ,lmao oil scien
Thank you for watching! Yes, the oil scientist drive me nuts. LOL. Have a great night. God bless!
Dude: thanks for the plain talk. It’s like using a cast iron skillet. Makes sense.
I'm going to buy one of these griddles and your vids are excellent! Thanks
I've had great success using the Blackstone Griddle Seasoning and Conditioner. 4-5 coats and it gets jet black. I seasoned my Blackstone as well as my SteelMade USA indoor flattop.
Hi Todd, Great Video. I have a quick question. Would it be possible to connect a Blackstone Griddle to Natural Gas?
I’ve seen on Amazon natural gas conversion kits.
The best is engine oil 5W30 longlife. Lasts for 30.000 minutes.
Does it have to be full synthetic or synthetic blend?
just ordered the 36 pro thanks Tod for the info !!!!
Thanks for the instruc, makes it so much easier with simple instructions!
Basically if you know how to take care of a cast iron skillet, you can take care of a griddle.
Right on!
I got a question do you only have to season it once or every time I use it to cook and how do I clean it when I’m done
My question exactly just bought one
What did you do?
Just seasoned my 22" blackstone, THEN COOKED 11 IB bacon and onion smash burgers. WOW what fun and how delicious 😋
Dude!!
Thx for keeping it simple ! Just fired up a new one and your video makes the most sense lol I’ll definitely be watching more of your videos !!!
I think you covered the whole “how to season” and put all the myths to rest!
A little salt & pepper and voila, Your grill is seasoned............. right?
Right! LOL. Thanks for watching :)
Thank you Todd, I used your code to purchase the 22" griddle. Love the videos BIG FAN!!
Thanks for informative video I’ve a chef master solid steel bbq but heavy rust I used a mix of white distilled vinegar salt and citric acid within 48 hours rust gone so now
Thanks to your info I’ll be seasoning my bbq thanks again from knaresborough, North Yorkshire uk 👍
Your love for the Lord and your willingness to share it in a time that being Christian isn't "cool" warms my heart and renews my faith that there are more of us out here than I think. God bless...oh, and I like your griddle videos too. :)
i used 10w30
LOL! Have a Merry Christmas, Greg :)
I bet your parents encouraged you to use motor oil. HA HA HA!
Best seasoning video I've seen and after getting one for my hubby(who doesn't do the cooking), I've watched a few of them today. I'm ready to go season this thing!
Hi Kitty! Thank you for watching and for the kind words. I appreciate it! Have fun griddling. Make sure you subscribe. I have a giveaway going on right now and I'll have another one going on soon!
thanks for your service I will be seasoning my new black stone using your way it's the simplest way to do it thanks again my friend
Playback speed 1.25 👍
Cheap and bald, we could be brothers.
I got my Blackstone 22" last week, quick to assemble and used it same day. I didn't even have Canola oil so I just used cheap vegetable oil following all of your steps above and let the oil smoke off and then recoated and cut up a large Onion and fried it completely to push around and coat the top until the onions started to blacken. Cleaned off the onions and proceeded to make some Philly Cheese Steaks with great results. Other than getting my timing right on using the grill and cooking times it was a success. Afterwards I cleaned off the surface with the scrapers, splashed on some water and re-scraped, let the water burn off and recoated the surface as it cooled. Ready for the next cooking adventure. :-)
Thanks Todd! You flattop mad man!
