    I can’t believe Netflix actually made a film that romanticizes kidnapping and sexual assault. What’s even more disturbing is the number of people who watched it and believed they were in love and were relationship goals.

    About Beauty and the Beast, I recently watched a video that kinda changed my opinion on the movie. As you said, the beast is screaming a lot and trying to have everything go his way in the beginning, but after he saves Belle from the wolves that gets less and less. He tries to make her stay as comfortable as possible, he is generally nicer to her (stops bossing her around) and participates in her interests (she teaches him to read in one scene, they go outside together to feed the birds etc.). When he lets her go, she's not yet in love with him, because then the curse would have already been broken. She even says to the villagers that the beast is no danger because he is (quote) "her friend". It's not until she sees his act of mercy on Gaston and almost losing him to death that she realizes she is in love with him - until it is her free choice to come back to him and to choose him.

    • @z1LeaF
      @z1LeaF Před 2 lety +21

      Yeah I did not agree with the Beauty and the Beast commentary since everyone has jumped on the "its stockholm syndrome" trope and there is much more nuance to the animated movie (ignore the live action please) and she does not love beast while being his captor, she chooses him herself after he lets her go.

    As an Italian I was shocked when this movie was released. Just the fact of a 'sexy Mafia boss' makes me gag, because it's clear this woman (and why is it mostly women who write this stuff? Internalized misogyny?) doesn't know what Mafia actually is.

    To be fair to TPB, Buttercup didn't fall in love with her captor. She was literally engaged to him before he left and he came back cause he heard that she moved on (she thought he was dead). Like not pretending his reaction was healthy or a good thing but Buttercup did hate him until he realized she was her once thought dead lover (who she never got over). So nothing close to 365, nor the kidnap-love trope

    Abduction-to-lovers is a gross trope, but I don’t think The Princess Bride really fits as an example. They were in love with each other first, then Buttercup thought Westley died, then she agreed to marry the prince in her grief-stricken state, then she was kidnapped, then Westley “saved” her by kidnapping her from her kidnappers. He was definitely shitty to her when he was pretending to be the Dread Pirate Roberts, but she also held her own and handed his shit back to him. She didn’t show any signs of being in love with him until he revealed his true identity, the farm boy whom she loved and lost.

    • @GeraldineHero
      @GeraldineHero Před 2 lety +12

      Most likely Wesley did not reveal his true identity because he wanted to see if Buttercup still loved him or if she wanted to go back to the prince. That's why he was shitty to her since he is supposed to be Dread Pirate Roberts, the most feared pirate of them all.

  • @megarakadmea
    @megarakadmea Před 2 lety +37

    Westley had heard Buttercup betrayed him by marrying the prince and wanted to freak her out as part of a guilt trip. He didn’t want to kill her but he thought she was dishonest and cruel and never cared about him. Revealing his identity would blow his cover since at the time he was a pirate and wanted to get the truth out of her with his disguise. Sure he could have taken it differently but it’s part of the whole fairy tale set up disguises and have three challenges which he did just prior to the reveal.

    The bar for men is so damn low, so low in fact that movies like this and fifty shades are made to be these big romantic sexy things and straight women just eat it up, especially older women that should know better and warn young girls about this type of bs, but when this movie were released all i saw for weeks were memes about how bad (unironically) they wished to be kidnapped by this dude and i'm so tired of media doing this again and again.And now when girls romanticize a little more explicit creepy dudes like Joe from You, everybody is so shocked, like really ??? • @gingerkatherina
    @gingerkatherina Před 2 lety +14

    It would be super interesting to see this trope reversed for once. I bet there aren't many men that fantasize about being upducted by a dominant, aggressive woman. Even if she was nice:
    Women stalking - crazy (thinking of Rose from Two and a half men)
    Men stalking - romantic
    It is interesting that men or women never get together with their female stalker/abuser/abductor in the end (Movie examples "Obessed", "Chloe") but they almost always do if the abuser is male. (At least I can't think of another example now)

    Btw Stockholm syndrome is not what the media makes us believe it to be - it was something police said a woman had who was actually complying with her captor on the basis of survival not because she has some connection with her captor. Stockholm syndrome is not a thing lets stop using this term !!

    • @samanthanorton4538
      @samanthanorton4538 Před 2 lety +5

      It may not be a psychological term, but it is a real thing in which a captive grows to sympathize with a captor to the point that they refuse to help police and may maintain a relationship with them. Extremely uncommon in real life, however, it is very common in media. Therefore, the term still applies.

    • @myeyesareblu

    This movie is based on a novel series. The author explained in an interview that she'd started to write it because she had been unhappy with her relationship and she'd wanted to live her sexual fantasies vicariously through Laura. No need to say it was badly written - the text wasn't even supposed to be turned into a book and actually published at first. Yet it somehow happened and then it got ridiculously popular in Poland AND THEN someone thought it was a good idea to turn it to a movie. The rest is history...

She said, amongst other disgusting things, that the woman on the plane did not want to have sex but she was flirting with him beforehand so she should handle the consequences…in the same interview she said that women don’t like vanilla sex…there is a difference between being into rough sex and doing consensual “non-consensual” things ( it’s like role playing) and an actual rape. Movies never seem to understand how bdsm and other types of “rough sex” works. In normal relationships when people do this they are both agreeing to it to begin with it’s not a thing that is done by force. He was also just so annoying I don’t get why women like him at all. I’m just so sick of the “he’s so aggressive and manly but he has a soft spot for me and that’s so cute” trope like come on why y’all like abusive men? Why does it have to be our responsibility to stick by their side until they mature and stop being “bad”? It's all fun to watch your videos and other youtubers making fun of it and ranting about it but watching it myself, I think that's not it.
    As someone who was touched without consens by someone in the past, I hate how this movie seems to portrait it as something erotic. It was not erotic when I got touched like that.
    It made me feel dirty and kind of like it was my fault.
    It's been years that I was in this situation but there are still times that I catch myself thinking that it was my fault or that I was prude for not letting him do whatever he wanted to do.
    These movies will do so much damage to young people out there and it angers me that apparently, the author of the books has written about her own fantasies.

    I know that this movie is problematic and sends wrong messages and whatever, but if I am honest that is not the reason why I stopped watching it. My main reason is that this movie DOESN'T MAKE SENSE like really it is infuriating. It is actually so stupid. Like let's take a look at the events that result in the infamous sex scene on the boat: The girl tries to escape because she is being held hostage (which doesn't make sense, like how could you escape from a boat?) then, the guy tries to impede her escape by grabbing her, because she wanted to escape from him, because he was holding her hostage, after that physical struggle she falls in the ocean, again in her attempt to escape from him. Then he "rescues" her from drowning. And then she suddenly realized that he "really" loves her because he rescued her from drowning, which happened because they violently struggled, because she wanted to escape from him, the guy who KIDNAPPED her and wants to hold her hostage for a year. Her response? "Oh I want to have sex with you now because I know now, how much you care about me" I was like WHATT???

I found it boring because it was mainly the cast in one room and talking ( I do like this style if it's done well like Castlevania and the Avatar episode "The Storm" are amazing), how badly Bender treats Claire and the movie frames this as romantic??? I wouldn't mind this if they didn't get together, he apologised to her or he got reprimanded by the teacher for it. As a sexual assault survivor, it's incredibily insulting and i'm glad we've moved on from this attitude and how they made over Allison because she was deemed as "weird" and "ugly" even though she wasn't? As someone who dresses similar to her, it annoys me that she feels she has to change to attract boys to her. Nothing wrong if you want to change your appearance for yourself, but if you're changing yourself to attract boys or girls, you're not going to attract the person you want! I'd love to hear your opinion on how women and girls who dress in a masciline or androgynous way in media are expected to be made over to look more acceptable.

    Beauty and the Beast (1991) had a feminist screenwriter and still ended up far more disturbing than the original story, the fact that it won its very own award and is still heralded as some classic (particularly for the modern woman) is very telling - it's the same story over and over - from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers to Beauty and the Beast to 365 Days. Somehow this story is timeless, and it's worrying to put it mildly.

      Apparantly, in the book, he intended to get her pregnant, so that she doesn't leave.
      I haven't read it, and I'm not going to, but that's what I heard.

    50 shades of grey was just boring. I remember seeing at the cinema trying to bond with a co worker at a new job. We did end up binging pll together the end of the show was the beginning of the end of the friendship but it was worth watching that movie.

    When I saw the trailer on Netflix, the line “are u lost baby girl” was my favorite but it wasn’t anymore cause he repeated it multiple times and lost its meaning. I like massimo in 365 because side by side of Christian and Hardin, massimo is better character from them

    Ok. We are all understood that this is a (bad) fan fiction made into an original story and movie, right? Right? I can’t tell you how many times I have read this exact movie as a fan fiction. However, I can also recall similar fan fiction mafia stories that were soooooo much better than this movie.
    I love how you are looking for sense and logic, but this is another erotica made mainstream, 50 shades of grey. An “original” created from fan fiction “inspired by ” but nothing really related to other original source material.
    I liked the quote at the start of the review by Massimo’s relative , but how is this line feminist? I really don’t understand feminism so please explain.
    Knight and Day is exactly what you described at the start of the your video, he kidnaps her for a reason because he has too. (Secret agent, secret mission, danger everywhere)
    I am gonna roll my eyes at Beauty and the Beast. It is more than fantasy but a fable about character that was a traditional way to tell children about morals and other lessons. The Disney version was taken from a different source material and there is more depth to the actions of Belle’s father . It was about greed/(insatiablness, ungratefulness) -not necessarily of the father (but in some versions and on other Belle’s sisters) and violation of what is precious. It was why in many versions of Beauty and the Beast the a beast calls the father a thief (stole a rose) the one thing precious to the Beast. Also, it goes further to speak to the classism and gap between rich and common. It didn’t take much insult to be taken to task if you were common dishonoring a wealthy person. Maurice stole /dishonored the Beast and needed to be punished , incurring a debt to be paid. Belle decided to stand in for Maurice this the contract and pay his debt in her father’s place. Prisoner maybe but not captive. But even then her position and place changed overtime. So many things in B&B to unpack but every one is so …derrr…Stockholm Syndrome. No.
    Everything is problematic (for op) probably should be a t-shirt logo. So. nuance. Things need to be problematic so kids can use their brains and build their character and discernment for right and wrong which is more memorable than being told outright what someone else thinks is right or wrong. No we will not make it plain. I am over having everything be spelled out crystal clear. Too many “it’s problematic “ in this video.
    I agree 365 is awful but , the loose linkage to B&B set me off. People are too surface and miss the point (and original culture of authors and how they told fables) of the story.
    Ever seen Russian/slavic fables? 👀!!
