- Is This The Best Background Blur / Bokeh / Shallow Depth-of-Field Filter Ever? In this video, we will stress test the brand new Photoshop 2022's updated version of the "Depth Blur" feature, which is a part of Neural Filters. This time around, there are major changes like processing on-device instead of the cloud, and way more refined results among many other additions.
But still, the question remains, can we finally use it now? That's what we will find out in this episode. Also, we will put this feature head-to-head with Luminar's Portrait Bokeh AI and see how it holds up. I hope you enjoy this video. Thank you so much for watching :)

Hi Unmesh - amazing review, and thanks for objectivity and keeping us on our toes. Feedback is taken to the team, we'll continue refining the ML quality, the user experience and use the power of Photoshop and masking capabilities!
Thank you, Alexandru :) I know Photoshop's in good hands because of incredible people like you who want the best for the program. The improvements are drastic, and I can't wait to check out what's next!
May I take the opportunity here to express that you should invest so much into AI.
Programs like Gigapixel AI or Sharpen AI are doing amazing, truly amazing job, and I would love to have the power of Adobe to do all that even better.
Sharpen AI in particular allows me to deblur an image with a small camera shake, which is something you think would be impossible to do but it does it marvelously. It blows my mind each time I use it.
It's good to read that you're determined to focus on the masking capabilities - I certainly do hope that includes adding manual masking overrides into this tool. And maybe someday, Adobe will work with making the paint/erase cursor more visible in the workspace so that most of us don't have to guess where it is on a neutral background. Sigh ...
@PiXimperfect Hey Unmesh, thank you so much for making such a video like this. Please keep make the videos like this about negativities with Photoshop. Because there are so many wrong things in Photoshop beside of good ones. We can send to you some serious problems or developing requirements for Photoshop if you start a post on your CZcams or Instagram. Because your videos are cared for by Adobe developers. Be our voice :) (sorry for bad english)
Nice ...
This man is not just teaching us photoshop but also he's improving Photoshop with his amazing feedback. Keep up the good work. You are amazing.
So awesome to see Adobe noticing its community and creators, you especially. Congratulations!
I made many good friends at Adobe, and they are always open to feedback.
@@PiXimperfect you are a treasure for Photoshop team and for creators like us 🤭
► For those of you who have concerns over the absence of manual focus masking at 10:59: Many of you are suggesting using the masking tools inside neural filters. Please note that it is nothing but a simple mask that you can anyway add in Photoshop, and it only controls in which areas the "overall" effect shows up or hides (whether blurred or in focus). That's a good idea if you want to bring back certain things, and it might work in some cases. However, it may result in unnecessary halos. Also, here's the actual problem; how will you defocus the things that are mistakenly kept in focus? The only way to do that is adding blur later, manually, defeating this feature's purpose. It isn't like Luminar's Portrait Bokeh AI, where you can absolutely control which areas to blur and which ones to keep in focus.
Thanks for this. It’s good to see the difference. I use Lightroom, Luminar Ai and Photoshop for my post production. I’m so gutted I can’t afford to pay for the course as I was super excited to continue learning from it. I just wished there was a cheaper payment plan over a longer period of time.
Hi Shaun, those three trilogies are the same I use from time to time! Thank you so much for watching and your interest in the course. No worries, as long as you are subscribed to PiXimperfect, I will try my best to deliver good quality free educational content as well :) Thanks so much for your support!
@@PiXimperfect You are the best.
The intro price for the course is certainly worth it. Working my way thru it and its really good. Worth eating noodles for a little while.
I got your ad on your video 😂
I wish who saw my comment his parents lives long with good health 💞 Lots Of Love from Last Pakistani Village Siachen Valley if u can plz Suporrt ur bro🙏
May you and yours always stay absolutely healthy and happy! Thank you!
Amen. I wish you the same.
I'm so glad I found this channel!
12:45 you can use the + and - in the top left of the screen to add or remove mask.
This man is an expert.
So much fun learning this new Photoshop with his relaxing tutorial.
Thanks!
Great video.
Computational photography is getting better and better. Maybe in the future, no one will care about aperture 😅
Absolutely true! It's crazy how far we have come!
but there will always be a difference with the real deal
No one will care about photography either. It's becoming a 'human not required' activity. People should be careful what they wish for. You are redundant.
It’s great to see Adobe respond to constructive criticism. These technologies will only get better. Right now though it’s a million miles away from a real photo with shallow depth of field.
Very good and intersting review ... I am huge fan of your channel!
PS does provide the tool to add or remove selection by + and - icon in the left panel
My best photoshop teacher
Unmesh you rock! know no other guy with your ease way to share knowledge - keep up the good work, is indeed adding value to us!
Thanks for the review. You can manipulate the mask in Depth Blur - look at the toolbar on the left hand-side (circle with + and circle with -). As soon as you click on one of them you can use the "Select subject", "Invert", etc then add or subtract from the mask using the circle with + or circle with - .
Hi Lyne, thank you for your feedback. But those tools are only for selections and create a simple mask. They can remove the effect from certain areas just as a normal mask would, but will not add blur (defocus) in areas where required.
you are right. I myself tried using those plus and minus sign. you can actually add or remove the neural filter effect from any area in your image. as there is no flow option to make the mask smooth. you can always use opacity in top left corner. it will act as a flow for masking.
Tutorials like this are worth their weight in gold !...many thanks!
You have really good production value for your videos. Great job man
This is a great review. Looks like Adobe still has more work to do, but I think they'll get there.
We are all hopeful, and I'm sure Adobe will do amazing things!
Hi Unmesh, great video! I've found the easiest way to fix the incorrect selection issues is by outputting the depth blur as a smart filter and then using the attached mask to remove the blur from the areas in which you want to restore the sharpness :)
That's a good idea, and it might work in some cases. However, it's nothing but a regular mask that you could add later anyway. Here's the problem; how will you defocus the things that are mistakenly kept in focus? The only way to do that is adding blur later, manually, defeating this feature's purpose.
@@PiXimperfect or you could use the "brush" that's integrated in photoshop to help bring focus directly (when applying the depth blur a set of tools appear on the left side the "circle with a +" and the "circle with a -" they're still a bit buggy and inaccurate but they get the job done). hopefully this comment makes sense haha
I'm interested to find out .... how did you get the Depth Map Output Only to export in a way it can be used as a layer mask? I'm trying to figure it out and can't...
@@FotomakerAcademy Before selecting and applying the filter you need to convert the layer to a smart object
@@artisanphotoshop Thx for the reply!
Great discussion, there is so much to learn here. What more amazing is it's free knowledge. Thank you so much!

****New amazing PS22 feature**** --> how to make a nice picture taken on $3k camera and $2k lens look like it's been shot on iPhone portrait mode.
I'm joking, of course. I love having lots of features and could be useful indeed when used in a tasteful way.
Thank you for sharing as always!
But you are right, this looks like shit.
that's a great tutorial for us Unmesh!! Adobe's technology is being improved and it's cool
Me: “OH MY GOD! THIS IS FREAKING AMAZING! THAT’S INCREDIBLE! “
Still me: “Wait what the hell you mean you can’t edit the mask???”
😂 wtf Adobe.
mannnn i just love your videos i dont know why love you bro
I still don't understand how it does such a clumsy job when it has more technology than Adobe Luminar....
In their defense, it's still in Beta. But again, yes, there are so many features inside of Adobe that if they can find a way to make them work together, it will be a massive success!
What you didn’t touch on was the ability to export the photoshop depth blur as a layer mask. That’s the output you would go for for more “photoshop” customisation
If you save the photo as NEW LAYER MASKED, you can modify the mask. Although it's not in the neural filter, you can make changes to the mask afterwards.
Just wondering if its's possible to changes the blur effect after you saved it, I couldn't find this?
It's a great review for the new Photoshop update. Thx.
Great video. Another great tool for using Micro4/3rds users.
you're really amazing, i really admire your work, thanks always for sharing
Sir, your content is gold, please keep it up!
Thanks for pointing out the inability to adjust the mask. I ran into this issue today and it gave me 85% good blur, but not 100% !!!!
awesome Unmesh😆 i love your videos
amazing tutorial and feedback, i learned a lot from you.
your channel is the definition of "gear doesn't matter", thank you so much, keep uploading!
OMG!!! A scene in ADOBE R&D department . TM is telling the R & D team "Guys keep this picture next your system, please be aware that this guy is going to test the upgrade, not me. So sit tight and do a good job and see that this guy comes back with good review". No prizes for guessing the picture of that guy.😁😅😅🤣
You are the best, piximperfect! glad to discover your channel!
I hope Adobe will include a paint brush where we could still paint the areas that needs to be blurred or sharpen that is not detected by the focus subject option. but this is a great improvement! Thanks Adobe!
Umesh, I don't know if you have addressed the problem I have encountered with my IMac with the M1 chip. Some of the features in Photoshop 2021 only work if running Photoshop in Rosetta and some only if Rosetta is turned off. I have also encountered problems with smart Sharpen, if I don't check use legacy in the settings I get three vertical lines in the sharpened image.
Dude, neural filter in Photoshop 2022 is just MAGICAL! Thanks for pointing this out!
This is insane!
sure
I love your tutorials, they are GREAT! Thank you so much :)
Positive Unmesh…… 7:17 positively honest Unmesh. Love you dude 👍
When Adobe listens, then take it seriously. Still the kings of image processing.
If they were listen, than we could have all adobe software multi cpu and multi thread compatibility.
Woah!! got one of your video as an ad for this one 🤣
Amazing as usual! Thank you for being the best teacher❤️✨
Omg , i love your job !! You’re so amazing. ! Thank you
Thank you so much for this Bro. Unmesh!
This is great, i love ur video, professional.
I love your videos! Thank you for all you do
Unmesh, I agree with all of your points. I've been testing this beta feature out for a bit, and it makes some very odd choices, e.g., keeping portions of the background in focus, while blurring other parts of the same object. And, as you say, the selected focus is entirely too sharp. I realize that this is a beta tool, and Adobe is using us to get feedback in order to know what works, what doesn't and what do people really need, but I'm surprised that they haven't added tools for manually adjusting the mask. They've got all that technology in PS, and it doesn't seem too hard to add it into this tool. As it is, I can run the blur feature twice and mask out any pieces I don't want, blending two images. But at that point, I can just do it the old fashioned way.
thanks for the video 😍😍😍
THANKS FOR ALL THE INFORMATION!!!
I saw your ad on your vdo.. that's funny and incredible
Absolutely awesome. Thanks
I just happened on you via a Google news link. Your tutorials are awesome. I'll be watching more. Great production in the process of your creating/sharing and great videos from what I've seen so far
Thank you for sharing. I learn a lot from you every time I open a video.
Very cool. But, think I'll hold on to my fast glass for now. ;-)
Great Video.
You're right about doing the masking by hand.
Manual rocks (at least as of now). Thank you so much!
Ehhh, nah, as long as there's the option to output the depth pass, I'm happy. Great video as always.
Great video! An interesting update in the future I'd like to see could identify already out of focus areas and just further enhance them.
Hello Unmesh.
I'm so happy that I found you teaching Photoshop, but too late, you're teaching so good I spend a big amount of money to learn photoshop in Afghanistan, but the teachers wasn't able to teach me and Photoshop was getting harder to learn for me, and then I searched to learn photoshop online, and I found your video "Photoshop Tutorial for complete beginners' and I knew that I can learn photoshop from you because your teaching method is different.
I just want your instruction to learn photoshop.
A bundle of thanks.
I would have loved this feature in Adobe but because of the fact that you cannot adjust what is and what isn’t in focus. I’m so frustrated with that
May I suggest that you make one or more tutorials on how to repair typical errors in depth maps, from the new version of depth blur (with depth map only ticked).
HI thanks so much for ur good works,u have really help me in my job as a photographer,I always ur works, keep it up okay
This man is a legend.
excellent analysis. looking forward to the future version when this feature is practicable.
Isn't it great to have those two tools competing and pushing both developer teams to get even better? 😀
Because Adobe is so lazy unless it has some sort of obvious competition. Just look at how little indesign has changed in the past 8 years.
can I keep everyhting in lightroom, but just send my raw photos over to luminar ai to do the bokeh? I've been trying to but it only says I can send a jpeg of my edited raw over. If lightroom can't do it, can capture one do it where I an send my raw over?
Thank you Unmesh! So we are now a year+ after this video was uploaded. Did photoshop improve any of the issues you mentioned?
Thanks Unmesh! Great insights and review as always. Loved the comparison with Luminar. As a photographer I do feel isn't it easier creating natural blur by shooting f/1.8 at 85mm or higher? What are your thoughts please?
Luminar is much more powerful and precise. Photoshop has still a large way to catch up with Luminar . Thanks for the video.
You could bring back areas that have been blurred mistakenly by outputing the result as a new layer, then masking or the parts that shouldn't be blurred to show the unedited image underneath. It's not perfect but it would do the job.
Bottomline, that technology isn't ready for serious work. Doing it all manually is simply the only pro option right now.
For some scenarios it could be. The actual pro option is shooting it with a wide aperture to begin with
@@Flamamacue Yes captain obvious lol! Of course if the picture was taken that way there's no post effect to be done.
@@CarcPazu "Select subject" started out just flawed enough to be useful in a select few situations, now I use it all the time and it often gives better results than manually in minute fraction of the time.
It's still good enough to be useful sometimes and by next year it will probably be even better
A VIDEO SUGGESTION. Hey bro... No words about your videos. Just perfect always... i really love to watch total lesson without missing a single second. Let's get into the question. "I just want to learn an smart and accurate way to fix the cloths. Messy wrinkles are the main." I think you got the point... and Thank you so much much much for your every lesson. ❤️
Try Camers Raw Filter and slide the texture slider to the left. It worked for me without frequency separation.
Holy molly, this is insane, you are insane, everything is insane!!!! I am getting insane, what is happening!!!
I purchased the photoshop course 👍🏽 I’m learning a lot
Hi
ADMIN HERE: Congratulations! You will love it. Thanks for your support.
Excellent tutorial! Found it very useful. How can I find your brushes for hair?
Whooooooa! I’ve been debating on luminar too
Very good comparison 👍🏻
When you output first layer you can shit+ctrl+f a few times as needed and you'll get a more in-depth blur. 😊 Thankyou for your continued support. 😊
How about just setting it as smart filter under output and just mask out the sections it missed?
After watching this video, I quickly tried it out with a very simple picture of mine (bird on a stick), and there were still significant issues (e.g. edges of the branch were blurred making it look unnatural, certain branches of the branch missing). If I can't even do such a simple picture near perfectly, I don't really see the point of it in its current state (I may as well just do the masking and blurring manually).
Maybe PS need to facilitate editable "focus subject mask"
Very sharp review. I noticed you just had to turn on the Depth Blur. I had to download all the Neural Filters before using. Was yours like that? I would have thought it would have downloaded with the upgrade. It didn't take long, I'm not upset because it's not a big deal, just curious. And "jaggery" would be Mick Jaggery, or what you wanted was jagged. You can add a "Y" or "...ish". You really do speak excellent English, though. I'm a big fan and have learned a lot from you.
So,i guess we could say as for now they are both good in their own way depending on your photo and/or subject
Although the Depth Blur missed elements to keep in focus like the girls backpack, if you output as a layer, you can use a quick mask and paint back the backpack from the layer below, so there is a workaround. The bush to the left looked best with some blur which Luminar AI did. All in all they both have their strengths. Luminars brushes are very useful though for masking areas.
like always thanks for another video
This man is a legend !
Its better. But if you look at the end of front of the car, its in focus, but the road surface beneath that area of the car is blurred. So its better, but still needs work.
I watched the ad you starred in while I watched your video bro😂🤣🔥
Nice Jobs 😚🔥
As a pro photographer, I have to say this is really impressive. Not perfect but its close. I'm not sure this software has it but if you could select a point where the sharpest point of the picture is for example the eyes, then use a slider to adjust the blur i think that would be more realistic.
That makes sense! Yes, it's getting better and better by the day. Thank you so much for watching :)
I can actually do that on my Samsung phone. Insane.
I love how Luminar nowadays challenges Adobe. But for me Luminar is not very practical as blur only works with people, not with e.g. a car. Adobe "subject" does.
This is not a review, it's an Adobe briefing on what they'll work on this month :)
Hahah... yes Indeed
Your intro is awesome 😎😎
Please my Neural Filters is faint so when I select it don’t come can you help me do the settings 😢
Nice ☺️ thank brother
I have a challenge for you or maybe you can help me:
Recreate the "brilliance" filter from the original Photos App. (Mac). in photoshop.
I have been a photographer for a long time and I have never succeeded in recreating this adjustment effect on Photoshop. When I am on my i-phone and I modify my photo by reducing the "brilliance" adjustment, I manage to have results that I cannot redo in Photoshop. It's a mix between light tones and hdr. I waste a lot of time trying to redo this same setting ... Can you?
Hi Unmesh!! Grt skills and design. I was thinking to switch to this career from my current soft dvlt job. Can you help me out whats this field is like? Have many Q
