Just that statement, breaks a Ayrton Senna fans heart. Damn, did we want him to dominate every race. The guy never gave a half assed performance in his life. It just was not in him.I feel privleged to have lived when he raced in his prime and to see him perform racing miracles. Ayrton had alot of people who hated his guts. The fans of those he destroyed with skill on the track. But Ayrton also had hundred of millions of racing fans, who tuned in every race, to see The Maestro work his trade. We miss you, Ayrton. We always will. Rest In Peace, Great One.
He said: "I´m designed to win". It's not like anyone else saying that. It would look silly. But you can see in his eyes that he knew exactly who he was!
All times I see his interviews and the truth in his eyes, words and voice and his self confidence... I want to cry! And I do!

As a brazilian privileged enough to see the guy at that time, I will try to summarize why he is such a hero to us:
When Senna started to win races and dispute championships, Brazil was going through strong hardships: hyperinflation, rising crime rates, a disorganized state of things after two decades of military dictatorship, it's was just a hard time for us in general and even in sports we didn't have reasons to smile. The last world cup we had won was way back in 1970 and our great spectations in 1982 and 86 were frustrated in a very harsh fashion.
Brazilian people were mostly depressed about their country and felt somewhat lost, we have just kept losing and losing.
But that guy on Formula 01 was the perfect antithesis of those feelings. Everytime he was racing, he was racing TO WIN. He refused to accept anything short than winning. And he was that proud brazilian who carried a green and yellow flag whenever he was on the highest place of the podium. Ayrton Senna was a kind of a collective medicine, a medicine to our souls and we have intuitively reacted to him, not knowing exactly why, but the fact is that we did it. That's why, excellent as they were, both Emerson and Piquet didn't make the same effect on the people. Ayrton was more than an excellent driver or a champion, he was what we needed to feel proud and live life head on.
Some folks don't like when I say he was a hero, as they argue that it takes more than being a great sportsman to be considered as such, but Ayrton Senna was a hero precisely because he was much more than just one of the best drivers ever.
Tchau, Ayrton. I will never ever forget you.

Few people are so great like him, to this day his funeral was the biggest by almost a million more attendees than the funeral of Elizabeth II.
All you need to know about Senna can be summarized in his drive at Donnington from 5th to 1st in one lap in the pouring rain and him getting out of his car at Spa to help another injured driver. Simply incredible, there will never be another driver like him.

He was ruthless, brilliant, detail oriented and had a god-given talent for grip. For those who know , obviously there were drivers that took the world title many more times but Ayrton was the best and even the giants of the era admitted it too...

@@vgbclean Not far from thruth actually, half of driving is understanding how the car feels and what needs to be adjusted to make it better. Now they can drive stupid and telemetry + engineers in the pits do the half of the job.
One of the things that set Senna apart from others was his understanding that there are things bigger than sport, and being a sportsperson should not degrade you into a worse version of a human being by transforming you into a performing machine for sponsors and teams and keeping you silent about injustices and inequalities around the world. His 1993 comment "The rich cannot continue to live on an island of wealth in an ocean of poverty" is one of the greatest lines by an athlete in any sport. He was up there alongside the likes of Craig Hodges who spoke out against social and racial inequality while being an NBA star, Socrates in his brave stance against the Brazilian military dictatorship and in favour of worker democracy while being one of the highlights of the country's national football team, and others.
As a kid, I remember my father saying: there comes the Crazy yellow helmet again. My father was a Mansell fan, but above all he loved F1. I remember his face when Senna was declared dead. He got the Punch in the stomach- I did not believe he could die he said.

Currently, the Ayrton Senna Institute trains 60 thousand educators and financially supports the professional and educational training of 2 million children in Brazil.

No. Brazil has approximately 225 million inhabitants in total. Of this total, 70 million are children. Although the institution's work is very beautiful, 30 million is the total number of children with some loss of social rights (economically poor). The Ayrton Senna Institute supports, at most, 2 million children (according to information on the website). The Institute is located in the state of São Paulo and does not have the capacity to cover the entire country.
I dont follow the sport but I've heard of Senna's name a lot. But that right there makes him a hero in my book. Someone who gave back to his community. In the docs I've seen of him, he always seemed like a such a good guy, very humble.

In 1989 the normally aspirated engines arrived and many thought that Senna would lose some of his amazing speed without turbos. But Ayrton remained supremely fast in all conditions. While going around corners he still refused to take his foot off the gas pedal, a technique he learned as a kid during his karting years.
Ayrton Senna's trust in divine intervention helped him to go faster than he normally could have. Being guided by a higher power enhanced his performance beyond what it would have been without religion. His faith made all the difference. Ayrton had an unshakable belief that he was fulfilling God's will.
He prepared himself better than any other driver before, both physically and mentally. He was an innovator in using sport psychology, physical, and mental trainer Nuno Cobra before anyone else in Formula 1. He used techniques to control his breathing and relax when he was becoming over-aroused. These methods allowed him to concentrate at almost superhuman level and get into the zone almost at will during races.
Gerhard Berger: Once he was focused he didn't feel any pain or stress. Nothing. Damon Hill: He talked about a state of mind he got into whereby he was there, but not really driving the car. Prost describes how, after a race at Monaco, Ayrton explains how he monitored his performance during the race itself: He managed to visualize from a 'third person' perspective (i.e. as if watching from outside) during the race and corrected his mistakes.
Ayrton Senna had the qualities to be the best racing driver of his time, and that is exactly what he was. His tombstone simply reads: 'Nothing can separate me from Gods love'

been following F1 for 43 years. He is the greatest. I even named one of my sons Ayrton... Michael got very close. Max is now coming close I think.
45 years for me too - agree Senna is the best there has ever been or ever will be. I think Schumacher, Alonso, Verstappen are about half to threequarters of the way from regular average F1 drivers' level to Senna's level - they are way better than most, but not quite at Senna's level - he had something extra - a super extreme freak talent. In fact i think he was the greatest sportsman of all time. It's sad that people outside the sport have no way of recognizing that because the activity is just to alien to them - it's like asking them to rank the greatest fighterpilots, or astronauts - they just can't relate at all.

There are NO similarities in Senna and Hamilton! Senna could take ANY car and perform every race. Hamilton and so many others need a good car. Not to mention, the cars were so different back then. No one, since Senna passed, has the skills and the soul commit to win. Senna hated being second.
Senna had some Lauda and Piquet on his veins, that eye of the tiger for winning; but Senna was beyond that because all in his life would be around racing. His whole motto in life was "Win, win, win the race and the championship". His life was inside an F1 car, and everything in his life would circle around that; he didn't care much for money, women or anything else, even in his relax time, his mind was always, always thinking how to be the best F1 driver ever, in history. And he did it.
It's only sad, that unfortnatly, he didn't live to win more world championships, though i do think that he would race 5 or 6 years more, and no more than that, he would end his career around the year 2000.
What people don’t realize often is that he was by far the most skilled pilot in 1992 and 1993, but he could not win the championship because the Williams cars were by far the best. When he finally went to Williams in 1994, the rules were changed so there would be more competition. The problem was that they could not make a good and safe car for him while Benetton was cheating.
I simply stopped watching F1 after May 1, 1994. Gone waay too soon.

There was a natural charisma about him that endeared him to fans. You knew he would always give 100%, his level of talent and fearlessness meant that usually he was near the front.
He was also spectacular at overtaking, very few drivers since have been able to approach his skill in this area.

I think the 1991 Brazilian grand prix was the most legendary of Ayrton's race wins ans what makes it even more special is he won on his 31st birthday, its just a shame he had to literally collapse from exhaustion in order to achieve his goal. The title of this video is spot on, there "will" never be another Ayrton Senna. He was a good man but it makes me angry that Jean Marie Balestre treated him like shit on national television because of who he was. Ayrton could have been 4 times world champion but Balestre took the 4th title away from him after his collision with his "pet" Alain Prost at Suzuka but it was clear that whenever Ayrton did become world champion, Balestre applauded him along with the others but his smile to me looked insincere. He abused his power as FIA president and he should have been fired for his attitude, but one thing he didn't suceed at doing was destroying Ayrton's good name and legacy and that's a very good thing. RIP Ayrton ❤

While there will never be another,history has proven time and time again that greatness isn't unique or relative to a time period and that some day people will laud someone in the way we do no with Ayrton,maybe even more so. Given how F1 has changed even since his time,you can't compare the achievements of great drivers from different generations as they each face fundamentally different challenges.
Can't say this video is exactly thoroughly made and lacking oversimplifications, both in terms of general assessments and of specific facts. For example, Senna's crash in Monaco didn't happen simply because Prost was catching him. Senna was insanely fast there, qualifying a full 1.4 seconds faster than Prost, who was driving the same car. At the race, Senna was 50 seconds ahead of Prost, who apparently thought that by upping his pace he might be able to mess with Senna's mind. So the two started trading fastest laps, until Senna got the message that he was so much ahead and faster than anybody and he should just drop his pace and finish safely. After doing that, Senna crashed at Portier in an error that would normally hint at a very amateurish driver. It was like he never practiced driving at less than 100% because his racing mentality didn't predict that possibility. After that, Senna went straight to his room, having talked to nobody, and apparently had himself thinking that this would never happen to him again.
In 1994, the pressure was "on Senna to find his legendary form"? Where have you seen that this was the problem? Also, I don't see the point in mentioning the collisions between the two without any explanations about their background. Frankly, all this just seems hastily made by someone who didn't know remotely enough about the subject matter.
Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna would have raced each other for a decade , it would have been (THE BATTLE OF THE TITANS ) what a shame we were robbed of it.

Potentially controversial opinion, but as an Ayrton Senna fan born in 1993, I see a lot of Senna’s mentality, aggression, and skill in Max Verstappen. I wasn’t alive to witness Senna, but I’m alive to witness Verstappen, and I’m not taking his dominance for granted because there’s future generations of F1 fans who will hear of Max and wish they were around to witness his skill live

Main thing is how different the cars are from then to now. In Senna’s days it was much more mechanical grip and the drivers “wrestling” the car around. Today they have to finesse the cars or else the tires are melted.

1992 was nowhere near one of the worst McLarens ever, the team finished 2nd in WCC and won 5 races. There were McLarens in the late 70’s early 80’s that struggled to win at all

Senna would undoubtedly gone on to win the 1994 championship based on Schumachers disqualifications, and how the Williams' other drivers scored after May 1 that year. Im pretty sure Senna would have had it in him to score at least 2 more points than Hill did in '94 season and won the championship. Senna would have made it more challenging for Schumacher in 95 because Senna was faster than Hill, but not sure if he would had won the championship in 95. Had Senna stayed with Williams he would have likely won another 3 or more championships and had he still been racing in 1999, Ferrari would had been on Senna's mind. Who knows, just educated guesses, we all lost a great driver and we are still talking about him 30 yrs later in 2024. Maybe he would have retired after the last race in 1994 after Prost retirement, Prost being a big part of Senna's motivation, or would he been motivated by the new guy Schumacher?
