  • In this video I test the new Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra versus the new Huawei P50 Pro in a moon zoom for their 100x digital zoom capabilities. In addition, I shoot the moon with the Canon EOS R5 and the Canon RF 800mm to get a professional reference image. In the course of the video I also compare the two camera systems of the Samsung S22 Ultra and the Huawei P50 Pro, including the incorporated camera software. Last but not least I also shortly explain the different pixel binning technologies implemented in the two smartphones.

But with better technology and AI 30x or even 100x digital will look way better than now. Then again, if someone said 8 years ago that we will have phones with 100 megapixel, 100x digital and 10x optical zoom I would have laughed at him.

    I love the pictures I took of the moon with my S22 Ultra. I wanted so much to do it with the Note 20 Ultra, but it was just not good for it. If you look closely into the Huawei picture, you can see they have filled data in there. You can see the phone was not able to position the fake moon data with the actual picture, like how it has two Tycho craters partially superposed, and then everything else around it is doubled too.

    • @Quoutub
      @Quoutub Před rokem +4

      13:53 Indeed. Also, for example the left side of the moon is wrong 15:20. That's why a comparison with raw images would make far more sense, unless you want to examine the wrong machine learning details. Samsung uses machine learning in order to guess details, too, but they don't use it as extremely as Huawei here. For example, a Canon Aps-c camera with 35% more sensor pixels per object than the S22 Ultra and same effective lens diameter takes slightly "worse" photos of the moon.
      By the way, already the Huawei P30 Pro produced extremely artificial moon photos.
      This is one of the reasons why smartphones shouldn't use machine learning for digital zoom. It just leads to wrong and artificial results (not only the moon), if you look properly. Google and Apple cameras suffer from similar problems, when you zoom (my own experience).

    • @heroninja1125
      @heroninja1125 Před rokem +1

      @@Quoutub digital zoom is just kind of useless, you can do digital zoom in post-processing, the only reason to digitally zoom in is that it usually also reduces the autofocus area with it, but thats something that generally can also be modified, I would say its best to only zoom as far as it optically goes, and then get the perfect crop in post

      I agree, the Huawei images look bloody horrible and amazingly the creator of this video didn't pick up on what I immediately saw. Given the fact that he took AND processed the images I find that to be a pretty poor show, the repetition shown by the Huawei "AI" is horrendous, complete gimmick.

    • @thor8086
      @thor8086 Před rokem

      Does "filled in data" meaning post processing, then they all do even NASA. NASA make up pixels for clarity and better visual affect for human brain processing.
      Apple and Samsung does it for their preferred visual style. I agree most buyers want to get a pictures that make them look good regardless of picture accuracy. It is a consumer product and as long as consumer has option to get raw image or processed/beautified image then I am good with that. Apple has best implementation of post processing for authentic looking image. Samsung has best AI processing for average consumer desiring better pictures. Huawei still mislead their specifications during product launches so I assume they are more interested in making their pictures match their announced specifications even if they make up with wrong pixel information.
      The problem for me is that many Chinese cameras fake it to make 4k pictures out of cheap 2k CCD sensor, or make up many dead pixels using reject camera sensors especially in certain sales regions.
      The real problems is consumers can't tell which one has cheap sensor, reject sensor, or good sensor.
      CZcamsrs will most likely get good sensors. Many US or some EU purchasers will get good sensors but some won't. Most Asian, South American and African customers will get cheap or reject sensors. Same goes for optics, OIS, AP, etc. All manufacturers practice this to some degree but how much they do this depends on their corporate culture at the time like VW diesel gate. Sadly, brand and reputation are important.
      Apple has habit of stealing technology (Samsung 4G chip and Qualcomm modem chip designs, even Swiss clock logo theft then suing Samsung for copyright) during design phase. Samsung has history of succumbing to governmental pressure (Chinese requirement to use Chinese batteries) or cover up AP performance by benchmark app script or throttling. Huawei does all of the above and more with straight face. (Stolen technologies from NorTel, Cisco, Samsung, Qualcomm, Apple, etc. And lies about product specifications such as out-folding folding display phone durability)

    Apparently Huawei have been caught out for faking their moon shots. Apparently the AI that enhances the photo, merges existing moon textures over the final image. I'm not sure if they do this on the P50, but it seems as though the harder elements to fake, haven't been replicated nearly as clearly here. Hence why the Huawei is seemingly much sharper, yet missing some of the spots and details in other areas. Sharper I might add, despite having significantly less zoom, I don't think the difference between 12-16mp can make up the 90-240mm difference.

    I appreciate the effort put into the comparison and I'm glad there's someone on CZcams doing interesting comparisons like this when it comes to smart phone cameras.
    However, when showcasing the phones on a desk for the viewer to watch as it's being handled, just take the damn things out of their cases. I know these are daily drivers for you which is why you have matte finish screen protectors and bulky cases, but just take them off; it's incredibly distracting and just seems lazy when you can easily put them back on after the video.
    Second, please get a new intro or cut it entirely; it's oddly outdated for what CZcams is now and feels longer than it is. Keep it short and simple or ditch it; intros are a make or break for some viewers and it was nearly enough for me to click off.

      Just so you know, any picture you take is heavily enhanced by the AI, on any phone.
      But why especially the Moon? Because its very simple to train an AI to enhance images of known objects, if they wanted to they could do it with the eiffel tower too, just let the AI enhance millions of pictures of the exact same object and it will know how to deal with it perfectly because it already knows it.
      Some people accused the p30 pro of storing high resolution moon pictures and using it to improve the quality of the shots, but no one has ever found anything proving that yet, on the other hand tests proved that it doesnt cheat (for example, printing an edited picture of the moon with missing craters, then shooting that image with the p30 pro to see if it would "fill the missing craters" , it didnt)
      Both phones just have insane zoom and AI processing because the moon is a well know object.

    Still having a Huawei P30 pro I find the possibility of photographing the moon a simple fun curiosity, the optics of smartphones do not have the same resolving power as those mounted on SLR or mirrorless, certainly compared to a few years ago it was inconceivable to photograph the moon with a mobile phone but for me it remains a little useful possibility, I would prefer an improvement of the starry sky photos with a more precise focus.
