The first two Godfathers are Nos. 2 and 3 on my greatest films of all time list. I go back and forth on which one is 2 and which one is 3, that's how good Part 2 is. It's the best sequel ever made, but as you'll see it's also a prequel! BTW #1 on my list is a 1942 B/W called Casablanca which everyone should watch at some point. Tom Hegen says in the book that it was a weakness on Michael's part, because if the boss is just suspicious of someone, he has to get rid of him, otherwise he and his family may pay for it.
Michael cares about his family. Naturally, he does not want to kill Carlo and make his sister unhappy. He has to be absolutely sure Carlo's guilty before he takes action.

"Don" doesn't mean boss in italian, it's a title originally given to members of the chuch or nobility and later to every highly respected person. It's originally a spanish thing but the spanish exported it in southern italy when they conquered it in the 16th century. One thing that the movie does wrong is that Don always follows the first name and never the surname, so "Don Corleone" is inaccurate, "Don Vito" would be the correct way to say it.
Michael was--is--a Marine. The only reason Part 2 is better--the only way it can be--is because it is one of the best movie stories ever made. I await your reaction to Part 3 with great interest.

A little late but here is some random thoughts. First, well done. Vito Corleone is based Frank Costello. Luca Brasi was based on Willie Moretti. Moretti was supposedly the one that forced band leader Tommy Dorsey to let Sinatra out of his contract. Willie was nothing like Luca though. The actor that played Luca was once muscle for the Colombo family. Johnny Fontaine is based on Frank Sinatra. With tiny, minute shades of Joe E Lewis. Moe Green was based on Bugsy Siegel. The reason that they decide to kill Don Corleone is solely the fault of Sonny. When they were meeting the Turk for the first time, Sonny foolishly spoke out. His father tried to brush it off and dismiss it, and later chastised Sonny for speaking out. But the damage was done. It was the pebble that started the avalanche. Because the Barzini faction then knew, that while the Don was dead set against drugs, Sonny really wanted the deal. So they had to get rid of the Don and get Sonny in charge. But the Don lived and the Corleone family kept their power.
Thanks for sharing 😊 The thing is... even if the assassination succeeded and Sonny became the Don, he would be hell bent on revenge. Would he still accept the deal in that case? Unless Barzini was willing to let Sonny run rampant until things eventually cool off (meaning Barzini was willing to sacrifice some pawns for profit in the long run).
@@henryellow Well, at the time, Barzini was still the unknown puppeteer. His family would not be on the front lines in the war. As long as The Turk was alive, I don't think Barzini cared who got whacked. The Tattaglia family were cannon fodder to him and the Turk.
Part 1 & part 2 are considered some of the greatest movies of all time. Both movies won academy awards for best picture as well as others. Brando won for best actor. Part 3 is still good but not near the masterpiece as the first 2 which is why for some people they don't like 3 because it couldn't live up to the first 2

It's not strange for a baker to be awake in the middle of the night. For most bakers, their work day starts in the wee hours of the morning, like 1 or 2 am.
Michael Corleone was not in the Army, he was in the Marines during WWII. One might say the Italian/Sicilian Organized crime Families is somewhat like the Yakuza. But a slight difference.
Dropping the gun is important because his family, with their connections, can make all the other evidence go away. But if he's caught with the murder weapon, there is noting they can do about that. For example, if there's a witness? The family might have the witness killed, or pressured to change their story.

There is no way to intimidate anyone or pay anyone off to erase the fact that he was caught with the murder weapon. A police captain was murdered. If Michael gets caught with that gun he's doomed. Even the cops on their payroll wouldn't be able to do anything about it.

I generally don't watch reactors react to this movie or the its first sequel, because I get frustrated at all the stuff they tend to miss. You did a very good job! You're sharp! You must watch the sequel. The third one is okay, and gives the story a decent conclusion, so you should watch it as well.

When I saw it in the movie theatre, the audience LAUGHED at it. That should tell you everything. The studio couldn't even come up with the money to bring back Tom Hagen (the great Robert Duvall, fantastic actor). The original script revolved around Tom Hagen! Aside from the unrealistic 90s action movie garbage (a helicopter firing into a NYC skyscraper?), the LOOK of the movie is atrocious.....it does not have the same visual style as the first two. It's supposed to be a period piece that takes place in the 70s, and it looks like the late 80s. It's got the stupidest, creepiest love story subpolot. Al Pacino is terrible in the movie, he's nothing like Michael Corleone. Al Pacino even has said he didn't feel the character when he was making it. It just sucks beyond all words, it DISGUSTS me that people will take YOUR time up watching such mediocrity when you could be watching masterpieces. Instead of watching the crappy Godfather Part 3, you could have watched the movie that Al Pacino (Michael) and John Cazale (Fredo) did the very next year in 1975: the incredible, classic "Dog Day Afternoon". A masterpiece that hardly has any reactions! And it's a total beloved classic! I could go on and on. Unfortunately, most subscribers to reaction channels are dopey Americans with really dumb tastes. Like ten year old boys in the bodies of grown adults, it's pathetic. I hope you continue to hit classics, and also I hope you do some movies that no one else does. So many reaction channels do the same movies over and over again, and there are so many super classics that haven't been done yet. "Sophie's Choice", "Bonnie & Clyde", these are super classics. Glad you liked it. GF2 is widely viewed as just as good or better than GF. In GF2 you get a prequel and sequel in one movie. You get the backstory of how Vito Corleone came to power (played well by a young Robert Deniro). Then you see how Michael now runs the family and contrasts how Vito did when he was Godfather. GF3 had a very high bar set by the first two films and was criticized when it was released in 1990. But over time GF3 has gained acceptance but is unfairly compared to the expectations set by GF & GF2. GF3 is a fine movie and concludes The Corleone saga. You see how events from the two films affected Michael because they are much older now in GF3. Do yourself a favor and watch all three films.
Yes, this is a great film. But I suggest you read the novel which is five times better (e.g. it explains why Michael doesn't shoot Solozzo and McCluskey right away when he returns from the toilet, Vito Corleone's death is much more profound, etc). And the silly things the second film contains (you'll know them when you see them) aren't in the book.

Yes, that's likely the case. I was also surprised because I immediately thought it happened the next morning. Which would mean Tom already expected Woltz to say no, already had a spy among his staff, and already prepared to kill the horse and put it under Woltz's bed. It's more likely that it happened within a week (before they began shooting the movie).
@@henryellow another interesting trivia bit- supposedly, during rehearsals and script readings, the horse head was artificial but when the actual filming took place, a real horse head was used which totally surprised the actor, so his reactions and screams were more authentic.

Came back to edit my comment but it seems to have vanished. Godfather 2 is arguably better than the original while I seem to be in the minority of people who appreciate the third. There's also been a recent cut of the third which makes it more watchable. If after watching the trilogy you'd have any "back of your mind" thoughts or questions, the "Culture Mafia" channel has some lore.

Everyone says that part II is the best but I think part I & II are equally superb. I just can't choose between the two. Their both top tier best classic mob movies ever written.

A little late but here is some random thoughts.
First, well done.
Vito Corleone is based Frank Costello.
Luca Brasi was based on Willie Moretti. Moretti was supposedly the one that forced band leader Tommy Dorsey to let Sinatra out of his contract. Willie was nothing like Luca though. The actor that played Luca was once muscle for the Colombo family.
Johnny Fontaine is based on Frank Sinatra. With tiny, minute shades of Joe E Lewis.
Moe Green was based on Bugsy Siegel.
The reason that they decide to kill Don Corleone is solely the fault of Sonny. When they were meeting the Turk for the first time, Sonny foolishly spoke out. His father tried to brush it off and dismiss it, and later chastised Sonny for speaking out. But the damage was done.
It was the pebble that started the avalanche.
Because the Barzini faction then knew, that while the Don was dead set against drugs, Sonny really wanted the deal.
So they had to get rid of the Don and get Sonny in charge.
But the Don lived and the Corleone family kept their power.

The thing is... even if the assassination succeeded and Sonny became the Don, he would be hell bent on revenge. Would he still accept the deal in that case?
Unless Barzini was willing to let Sonny run rampant until things eventually cool off (meaning Barzini was willing to sacrifice some pawns for profit in the long run).
@@henryellow Well, at the time, Barzini was still the unknown puppeteer. His family would not be on the front lines in the war.
As long as The Turk was alive, I don't think Barzini cared who got whacked. The Tattaglia family were cannon fodder to him and the Turk.

Part 1 & part 2 are considered some of the greatest movies of all time. Both movies won academy awards for best picture as well as others. Brando won for best actor. Part 3 is still good but not near the masterpiece as the first 2 which is why for some people they don't like 3 because it couldn't live up to the first 2

It's not strange for a baker to be awake in the middle of the night. For most bakers, their work day starts in the wee hours of the morning, like 1 or 2 am.

Michael Corleone was not in the Army, he was in the Marines during WWII. One might say the Italian/Sicilian Organized crime Families is somewhat like the Yakuza. But a slight difference.
Dropping the gun is important because his family, with their connections, can make all the other evidence go away. But if he's caught with the murder weapon, there is noting they can do about that. For example, if there's a witness? The family might have the witness killed, or pressured to change their story.
I see. So that's why it didn't matter that there were witnesses who saw him drop the gun.
@@henryellow Yeah. The ONE thing that no one could fix is if the police caught him with the murder weapon in his possession. There is no way to intimidate anyone or pay anyone off to erase the fact that he was caught with the murder weapon. A police captain was murdered. If Michael gets caught with that gun he's doomed. Even the cops on their payroll wouldn't be able to do anything about it.
The godfather II is probably the best of the three
Part 3 is hugely underated.

I generally don't watch reactors react to this movie or the its first sequel, because I get frustrated at all the stuff they tend to miss. You did a very good job! You're sharp! You must watch the sequel. The third one is okay, and gives the story a decent conclusion, so you should watch it as well.

Great reaction! I'm subscribing! Part 2 is fantastic, I see you've already done it. Part 3 is ridiculously mediocre. It was done 20 years later as a studio cash-in, it's an embarrassment. "The Godfather" used to be the gold standard in how to do a sequel, and the third one ended that reign, lol.

@@henryellow Yeah, "those people" are idiots, lol. If ever there is a litmus test as to who has taste, and who doesn't, it's "The Godfather Part 3". What a waste of time and money and talent. When I saw it in the movie theatre, the audience LAUGHED at it. That should tell you everything. The studio couldn't even come up with the money to bring back Tom Hagen (the great Robert Duvall, fantastic actor). The original script revolved around Tom Hagen! Aside from the unrealistic 90s action movie garbage (a helicopter firing into a NYC skyscraper?), the LOOK of the movie is atrocious.....it does not have the same visual style as the first two. It's supposed to be a period piece that takes place in the 70s, and it looks like the late 80s. It's got the stupidest, creepiest love story subpolot. Al Pacino is terrible in the movie, he's nothing like Michael Corleone. Al Pacino even has said he didn't feel the character when he was making it. It just sucks beyond all words, it DISGUSTS me that people will take YOUR time up watching such mediocrity when you could be watching masterpieces. Instead of watching the crappy Godfather Part 3, you could have watched the movie that Al Pacino (Michael) and John Cazale (Fredo) did the very next year in 1975: the incredible, classic "Dog Day Afternoon". A masterpiece that hardly has any reactions! And it's a total beloved classic! I could go on and on. Unfortunately, most subscribers to reaction channels are dopey Americans with really dumb tastes. Like ten year old boys in the bodies of grown adults, it's pathetic. I hope you continue to hit classics, and also I hope you do some movies that no one else does. So many reaction channels do the same movies over and over again, and there are so many super classics that haven't been done yet. "Sophie's Choice", "Bonnie & Clyde", these are super classics. Not one reaction yet.
Glad you liked it. GF2 is widely viewed as just as good or better than GF. In GF2 you get a prequel and sequel in one movie. You get the backstory of how Vito Corleone came to power (played well by a young Robert Deniro). Then you see how Michael now runs the family and contrasts how Vito did when he was Godfather. GF3 had a very high bar set by the first two films and was criticized when it was released in 1990. But over time GF3 has gained acceptance but is unfairly compared to the expectations set by GF & GF2. GF3 is a fine movie and concludes The Corleone saga. You see how events from the two films affected Michael because they are much older now in GF3. Do yourself a favor and watch all three films.

Yes, this is a great film. But I suggest you read the novel which is five times better (e.g. it explains why Michael doesn't shoot Solozzo and McCluskey right away when he returns from the toilet, Vito Corleone's death is much more profound, etc). And the silly things the second film contains (you'll know them when you see them) aren't in the book.
Novels are always more detailed (and better) compared to movies, I agree with that.

Yes, that's likely the case.
I was also surprised because I immediately thought it happened the next morning. Which would mean Tom already expected Woltz to say no, already had a spy among his staff, and already prepared to kill the horse and put it under Woltz's bed.
It's more likely that it happened within a week (before they began shooting the movie).
@@henryellow another interesting trivia bit- supposedly, during rehearsals and script readings, the horse head was artificial but when the actual filming took place, a real horse head was used which totally surprised the actor, so his reactions and screams were more authentic.

Godfather 2 is arguably better than the original while I seem to be in the minority of people who appreciate the third. There's also been a recent cut of the third which makes it more watchable.
