I'm glad you enjoyed 'The Big Heat', one of Fritz Lang's finest. If you'd like to see more films about widespread police and government corruption then I would suggest that you try watching 'The Phenix City Story' a lesser known film but a true story about the exposure of corruption in Phenix City, Alabama in 1955, it is a hard hitting story and the violence is shocking for the time, and it has a very unexpected ending.

You should change your channel name to TSUNAMI OF FAVORITES because that's what you've provided. I haven't even finished 30 of your archived reactions, and you're delivering so many EXCELLENT seldom-seen jewels of classic films. ( I love discovering the Rotten Raymond films, and joking about how TV's "Perry Mason" Burr could have possibly get a law degree, license and accepted as an Officer Of The Court! Of course, since he obviously did survive Godzilla's 1956 film-attack on Tokyo, I guess his soul was purged. He was a bad, baaaad man in those late '40s/early '50s films... and even when he'd bleach his hair, he wasn't a good guy!)

This era of films almost demand another dozen or two or three noir-binge films. I am a fan of these "I can't remember films!" or, even better, "I am so frustrated trying to find evidence of my remembered memories that I start questioning my memories-!" My favorite version of THAT kind of film is 1944's THE PHANTOM LADY where Francois Tone's (toh-NAY) soon-to-be-divorced bad-wife turns up dead on a night he's out drinking with a lady that can't be found again. (Turns out she's real, but a traveling saleslady, and she never saw those local papers about the murder with Tone's pix on the front page.)

BLUE G is also an early TV-Superman George Reeve's film, as well as having Nat King Cole in a middle-of-film-career entry. Ann Sothern wavered between comedies, rom-com's, catty soap-operas (usually she was The Victim of snide comments) and dramas like BLUE G. She had a 4 season TV sit-com in the late '50s, but she had a 10-0 film series (the "MAISIE" films) that were fun - mysteries, adventures, comedies, sweeet innocent romances, etc. And her stable-mate Anne Baxter probably had the bigger-name films in her catalog (TEN COMMANDMENTS). Both lasted into 'modern TV series' as well (lasting into the '80s). These were two of Classic Hollywood's last-generation of Film Beauties, and they succeeded in finding semi-regular work in their 60s and 70s - NOT a common achievement among Hollywood Babes.

Mildred, have you heard convincing explanations for false conviction motivations? I've heard some that use 'soul cleansing' which are all tied to psychotic (misplaced, mis-reasoned) lies. Sometimes, the reason is "I'll be safe in a jail cell" belief, or "I'll do it for money - I can use a prison vacation, after all." Those are about the only two reasoned ones. The "I was drunk and I might have done it" seems reasonable as well.

Per an online inflation calculator, $1.40 in 1953 is $16.47 today, cumulatively inflated over a period of 71 years by 1076.7%. Was it two hambergers and five coffees? I was curious, so, just for fun I checked this ---> Where I live, if I bought those exact items at a McDonalds, with tax it would come out to $15.01. A difference of $1.46.

"I didn't like Prebble when he was alive. But now that he's been murdered, that always makes a man so romantic." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Ruth Storey. Star Trek Fact: The flower seller, Celia Lovsky, would go on to achieve lasting fame playing the Vulcan official T'Pau in Amok Time (1967). Botany Enthusiast Fact: Although blue gardenias are featured here extensively, in nature, the flower is a creamy white in color and its petals are delicate, turning brown quickly when bruised. Casting Notes Fact: Anne Baxter later appeared with Raymond Burr on his television series, Ironside (1967). George Reeves, famous for his portrayal as reporter Clark Kent/Superman in Adventures Of Superman (1952), plays a police captain in this movie. Richard Conte and Ruth Storey, who play prominent roles in this picture, were married in real life at the time. Technology Engineering Fact: Director Fritz Lang and cinematographer Nicholas Musuraca developed a revolutionary dolly for the camera that allowed for sustained tracking shots and intimate close-ups while shooting this film. Lang preferred the practice of tracking into a close-up shot of an actor as opposed to cutting to a close-up in editing. He believed the tracking close-up captured more of the actors' intimacy and emotions. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: When it starts to rain as Harry (Raymond Burr) and Norah (Anne Baxter) are driving to his apartment, he activates the automatic roof on his convertible. At the time, only one American car had a retractable roof in production. It was built by the American Playboy Automobile Company starting in 1947 and only 97 were made before the company went bankrupt in 1951. Peugeot also produced 470 convertibles with retractable roofs starting in 1935. The first Amercian car with a motorized retractable top was the 1939 Plymouth. Ford began mass-producing convertibles with retractable roofs beginning in 1957 when it introduced the Fairlane 500 Skyliner.

"Oh, well, you're about as romantic as a pair of handcuffs." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Dorothy Green. Music Enthusiast Fact: The opening theme was first used in the Broderick Crawford film The Mob (1951). Casting Notes Fact: Bannion's (Glenn Ford) wife Katie is played by Jocelyn Brando, older sister of Marlon Brando. Star Trek Fact: The portrait of Lagana's (Alexander Scourby) mother is of Celia Lovsky, actress and ex-wife of Peter Lorre. She is probably best known for her portrayal of T'Pau, the Vulcan Ambassador, in Amok Time (1967). British Rating Fact: One of only a handful of movies made in the so-called Golden Age of Hollywood that hasn't had its original 15 certificate rescinded or lowered by the British Board of Film Classification. This means that the film cannot be viewed legally in the United Kingdom by anyone under the age of 15. Although it may be considered tame by today's standards, the film contains some scenes where extreme violence is graphically described, as well as the disturbing 'coffee pot' scene. Another movie from this period to still retain this particular age rating in Britain for the same reason is White Heat (1949).

I don't understand what she's singing either. She should've just sung the original song in English 😂

IMO, Faye Dunaway in this movie is as frightening as any villain in any horror movie. It is a truly scary character.

The scariest part is she doesn't feel like she's doing anything wrong. She's like a sociopath.

Haven't watched the full review but need to say at the Turner Classic Movies Film Festival/TCMFF, I saw this on the big screen and the audience burst into applause during the moment I'm betting you're applauding too ;)

One of my favorites. Simple. This doesn't reach the top of many Noir lists but I agree - it's a most satisfying revenge film. But it's just a terrific study in Bad-Guy-isms. Bad cops, bad cop leaders and commissioners, etc.

By the way, when films introduce us to bad-guy gambling house owners (Bogart-Bacall's THE BIG SLEEP, as confusing at it can be), 'justice' is always satisfying because they have evil henchmen who do the dirty jobs. Drat. Well, as last the Vince's and Canino's get it.

I don't remember where in the sequence of films I'd seen this but I remember this one demanded that I consider "What are Good vs. Evil tales?" I would add some refinement but one consideration began with this film: "If you have a Good vs Evil film, then the Evil Character must be REALLY evil." No kinder, gentler evils... and Lee Marvin was The Evil Guy at the top of the heap for all of his Bad Guy films. He'd also be a pretty great Good Guy, too. And Lee achieves this Most Evil, Most Vicious status in this film above all.

If a character is evil at the core, then gentleness and kindness are usually false exteriors. It is merely a facade to hide their evilness. Then again, there are many types of characters. I haven't seen one I consider a "kinder, gentler evil" yet. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊

@@henryellow Howard DaSilva is a great villain but he is often that kinder, gentler character BUT BAD thru the film, and finally displays a viciousness. 1949's BORDER INCIDENT has a decent example but he is merely arrested (or is shot dead?) and his is not a 'satisfying death' - not a just-as-torturous as he's inflicted (or ordered). Strother Martin is usually the weak, sniveling henchman, or the sadistic prison warden (LIBERTY VALANCE, COOL HAND LUKE) and seldom gets a justice-level demise. It's interesting to do 'studies' on how Bad Guys are written and written-off. A lot of bad-guys/henchmen are killed by Their Own, due to some belief in betrayal OR that they didn't show the degree of loyalty demanded. And gosh - look at today's action movies where 50-70-100-150 henchmen or hired-gun mercenary bodyguards are slaughtered in every film. Don''t those guys have industry papers with these alarming headlines: "IMMEDIATE NEED - replacement 150 henchmen bodyguards. May die. Excellent benefits program though." ha ha

In the time of the movie's setting, women could be commiteed to an asylum for just about anything on the say so of their spouse, parents, brother. Angry? Commit her. Post-partum? Commit her. Want her money but not her? Commit her. That's one reason why the Ingrid Bergman character appears so meek. She's afraid of not just going mad, but of being sent to an asylum. I'm glad a lot of CZcamsrs are reviewing this movie because it explains so well the origin of the term, "gaslight."

Joe discourages Betty by saying 'we need to stay two feet away from each other or clunk me on the head with your shoe'. Betty's the one who announces to Joe that she's not in love with Artie anymore. Joe acts surprised and says, 'why? What happened?; Betty says you did!' After that it's hard for Joe not to hold back anymore and kiss her

Isn't it wonderful how we conveniently forget the man in the pool from the first scene, and are shocked at the end to see him shot and fall into the pool. Suspension of disbelief
