  • Ben Davis lived up to its reputation as perhaps the best Indiana high school football team ever with a lopsided 38-14 victory over a previously unbeaten Penn team. Both teams had 13-0 perfect records going into the state finals.
Steve Holman led both teams with 231 yards rushing although he carried the ball only 10 times - twice in the last half. Ben Davis rolled to a 38-0 lead in the first three quarters and then substituted frequently.
Holman set up the first Ben Davis touchdown with a 54-yard run in the first quarter. He ran 29 yards to pave the way for another TD in the second quarter and romped 80 yards on the first Ben Davis play in the third quarter. Chris lngs completed eight of his 12 passes for 154 yards, and Keith Walton grabbed two for the touchdown distance.
Place kicker Trinity Hines set a state record with five PAT kicks giving him 75 for the season, and he set a state finals record with a 48-yard field goal in the first quarter.
Penn got its two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard run by Dan Kyle and a 54-yard Brent Baldwin to Tim Geesman pass play.
It was the fifth state championship for Ben Davis Coach Dick Dullaghan.
The Executive Committee unanimously selected Chris Ings from Ben Davis High School as the recipient of the Phil N. Eskew Class 5A Mental Attitude Award. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate sponsor of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Ben Davis High School in his name.
