Best Cheap Gold Nugget Metal Detector

  • The price of gold has been rocketing upward recently and a lot of folks are interested in metal detecting for gold nuggets. In this video, I cover in detail my choice for the best cheap (comparatively inexpensive) metal detector that can do a decent job finding gold nuggets.
    The Fisher Gold Bug Pro is, in my opinion, a great first gold nugget detector for new prospectors. I’ve found gold with mine and it does a good job both of finding gold and yet it can be used to find rings, coins and stuff at parks and schools. Here is a link to this detector from High Plains Prospectors. (affiliate):

    Another idea for pounding down rocks follows. I took a 2-foot length of 3inch pipe and welded a foot square of steel plate at one end. As a pounder I took a sledge hammer, removed the handle and welded a 4 fool long piece of 1 inch pipe at one end. For additional weight I poured cement into the lifting 1 inch pipe handle. Whatever chunks of rocks can fit into the main pipe can be grounded up. Modifications to the above can be made to fit your needs. Also, small holes can be made on the steel plate so that powder can fall out as you pound the rocks but there should be steel footing to keep the unit slightly off the ground.

      Hello, I'm Jess retired at 58 that was 10 years ago now I'm up in the Rouge River Valley Oregon and I found all of theses miners Tailings I think 🤔 well I've told anyways. So given that and all of the Gold clam signs around I'm guessing the information I have is good.
      So I went out and got a guy old pan....... I did find a "Speck" after hours of planning then along came Bulldog and she was so happy to find me she pushed me down in the water and it went back form where it came from DAMEDOGS!
      So Mama is going to let me get a Detector! But witch one,? I don't want any junk, not to fond of used or Pawn Shop's but seeing how much $$$ their getting I'm starting to rethink my thinking and start asking questions to people that are smart about this kind of stuff before I start investing $$$ into my new hobby. Hat do you suggest for a old guy &his wife(68&69) she refuses to let me go wandering by my self.
      I'm not into finding bottle caps or pull tabs but I realize that it can't be help because people are pigs. But Gold is what we are starting after , especially with all of the Gold Clames around where we live.
      I'm leaning towards the "MineLab GoldMonster1000" but it's coming in at around 1k
      The other is the "Goldbug 2" still coming in at around the same price? I'd like to have your opinion as I value it with your extensive knowledge and background. Jess & Patti ::))

    Having built my own BFO detector, when testing it using an O-scope, it became very apparent to me that a detector that could analyze the signal in addition to detecting it would be a world class better machine. Such analysis includes phase and amplitude and needs some really good signal processing. And that's where the money is.

    What I like about your recommendation for this detector is size of coil, weight of overall detector, and cost is ok. Following a gold hole, you can get the detector in the hole. So, not having a pinpointer, this can be an advantage. I dont have this Fisher detector, I have the Minelab xterra with the original coil and bought the double d coil. It sure added the weight. There is a lot of complicated settings on the Minelab xterra, so I have to constantly keep studying the manual to get it right for the application I am using it for. I am prospecting a California motherlode area so want to lessen technology and weight for this project.

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  Před rokem

      I dont know which model of Xterra you have, but the highest ones are roughly similar to the GB pro, except for the small coil. The smaller coil is necessary for hunting gold. The GB pro is also simpler to use.

    At one underground mine i worked at we used a Gold BUG 2. a Gold master VSAT and a minelab GPX
    the Goldbug was the best at finding the real small gold up to 4 inches.
    The Goldmaster VSAT found larger gold pieces at about a foot. but miss really small gold found by the Gold bug.
    But the Minelab would find large clusters up to 3 foot but would miss small pieces picked up by the goldmaster and the goldbug.
    I like the goldbug for detecting mine dumps for the small gold missed by the miners locked in quarts.
    If I find enough in the dump, I will then detect in the mine for small ore bodies.
    In surface gold fields i almost always detect iron caps (Gossan)so you need to have a very good detector for them.
    I have one gossan with quartz veinlets I have been detecting for 40 years and very few people have found anything with their detectors. But I always find small nuggets.
    On the surface, I always dug hot rocks and have a small collection of meteorites missed by those looking for gold.

    The real strength in whatever machine you buy, cheaper or high end detector. It’s your ability to master that machine and understand it’s strength and weakness. I have quite a selection of detectors and some are easier to master than others. Reading the soil is another large thing to master. Patience is one of your greatest assets. Hi, Chris! I have a Fisher Gold Bug, and I love it. It's worth mentioning that, while the coil is waterproof, the control unit is not. I slipped on some wet bedrock and accidentally submerged the detector. It did not fare well.
    The reason I mention this is because (even though I had voided the warranty by getting the control unit full of water) the good people at Fisher repaired my detector at no cost to me. I couldn't believe it, I was fully prepared to pay for a new control unit. I had the detector back in less than a month from when I shipped it!
    Commitment to customers and service like that deserves to be talked about; it's another reason that the Gold Bug line is a good buy!

    Hi Chris, I just found your channel and subscribed after watching this video; it was excellent. I’m not gold prospecting but do have the Fisher F-19 with the small 5 inch coil. I would like to try searching for gold but live in New England. I’ve heard rumors of gold in Vermont. Have you ever searched in New England or are aware of any New England states where gold is a good possibility. Thank you and looking forward to more prospecting videos!

      I've not prospected the New England states. I've heard of some good nuggets found in Vermont or New Hampshire but cant remember which - t was some years ago. There is not loads of nugget gold in the NE states, it is pretty sparse, but it is there in a few places.

    Regarding the small vs. large coil, while you claim the large coil loses sensitivity, do you think it also sees deeper? I’m most interested in deeper but larger nuggets.

      I’m thinking that a Gold Bug Pro with the larger coil might be a good budget alternative to, say, the Minelab Gold Monster 1000.
      I wish there was a greater selection of pulse induction detectors with a few at a lower price point. Although I’m just interested in recreational detecting a PI machine is what I really want but they’re going for $2500 and up, a bit too pricey for a casual hobbyist like me!

Any idea or insight on comparisons to these in finding gold? And keep in mind I don't care about gold nuggets less than about a gram in size, so super sensitivity to very small gold nuggets is not of interest to me.

My freind is mad to get into nugget hunting in donegal ireland, and hes looking to borrow my minelab quattro to do so..now ive told him it weighs a ton and is designed primarily for coin & relic ..which is my enjoyment/forte my question is how much sucsessful will the gold bug pro be than my quattro that has standard 10" coil, in terms of percentage lets just say for arguments sake that the gb pro is rated 100% at finding nuggets would i be right in saying that my quattro would rate at 98 percent less at only 2 % of the gb pro.Its easy to see you know what your on about so i value your opinion. I watched your highly informative video throughout and so i havean idea that my detector would be next to useless at this job and very uncomfortable to use also. I read all comments so i know box is not submersible..but is it showerproof? Cheers

    • @ChrisRalph
      @ChrisRalph  Před 4 lety +2

      I dont know the size of the gold at Donegal, but I assume its on the small side. If so, your quattro with its larger coil would be a waste of time. Its like getting a cooper Mini instead of a truck if your goal is to haul horse and sheep livestock. True both the Mini and the truck are automobiles, but the Mini is just not designed to haul livestock. Its OK for a light shower, but would cover it over with a clear plastic sandwich bag if hunting for a full day in the rain.

    Here is an idea that you may find useful especially for sucking up gold under shallow waters from crevices. I took a kitchen implement called a baser. I inserted and glued a small piece of fish aquarium air tubing about an inch into the baser and sticking out about 2 inches. It can suck up small stuff which remains in the baser until the bulb is pulled off and the contents poured out into a cup. Benicio Dela vega

      Another idea: out of a 3 inch dia. By 2 foot long piece of PVC pipe I made a hand-operated suction tube for sucking up sand, small gravel, and hopefully some au from crevices. At the suction end, I fitted a flat-ended fitting from a vacuum cleaner. The discharge is near the bottom of the unit and fitted a 6-foot long flexible hose also from a vacuum cleaner with the exhaust end fitted about halfway up a 5-gallon bucket where the sucked up material ends up. This bucket is first partially filled with water so that it stays anchored near me as I work. The sucked up material stays in the bucket and the water just overflows out fairly clean.

      As I've never prospected around Georgia, I dont really know what the soil conditions are. The other problem in the SE states is access. In the west, a large percentage of the land is federal and open access. In the east, everything is private property and access is difficult. For someone new, I'd recommend buying a gold pan and my book, then joining a local prospecting club and learning more. Then, when the time comes that you are more experienced, think about adding a metal detector for nuggets.
