I've never been so upset about a cutting board that belongs to another man who lives halfway around the world. Great video, I hope you continue to find enjoyment in the hobby during the coming year.
Pete flashing his love handles has caused me to reevaluate my "choices" in life, I feel so conflicted at this point I may need to get drunk. Then he delivers the coup de grâce with the tender cutting board montage and I am all in. I'm yours, Pete, yours always.
The coconut test should be the industry standard for determining steel toughness. Solid data right there. How about a Spyderco Mule coconut shootout?

On your coconut bashes...the last strike of the Lionsteel glanced off to the side...perhaps that explains the rolled edge?
Was thinking the exact same thing, he also hit it one more time than the benchmade
not the most sciencey test I admit, but hope it showed something. I’d still take the lionsteels grind/steel/treatment combo for the record

Hey Pete, I just wanted to point out, on the 4th strike on the coconut with the lionsteel, the edge was actually subjected to more lateral forces due to the coconut rolling a bit. Knife edges don't take lateral loads the best.
Btw, my condolences for the cutting board.
Actually, there was no force laterally. The roll was after impact without force applied. It might have had some effect, but I highly doubt that.
Thank you for this review/comparison. It made me cool my head and decide against buying that Lionsteel B40. This is the exact reason why we need unbiased reviewers such as you and Nick Shabazz. Again, thank you and I wish you and your family all the best in 2020.
I own the B40, the Garberg and a 'bog standard' F1 (not 'X' or 'Pro')
The B40 looks & feels great, but the original grind is not good for cutting, since the bevel angle is way too steep.
The Garberg performs, but the handle feels uncomfortable to me..
In my opinion the F1 is the best knife (in this group), the only negativ point is the handle, it is a bit too slim/thin for my large hand.
My favorite knive? A Brisa Nessmuk, self built from a kit, with a lefty sheath and a handle that I shaped to fit my hand.
I really like this review, it doesn't hype the knives but tests them for what Pete considers important ... I'm not into rope cutting and coconut bashing, but do feathersticks, cucumbers and potatoes for food prep ....and still arrived at a very similar point..

The Lionsteel got twisted in the last hit while hitting it against the coconut. This did not happen with the Benchmade though.

*That's true. Compared Lionsteel B40 vs Benchmade 200 Puukko, Benchmade looks a bit crappy (although 3V steel is better than Sleipner). Unfortunately, no one has yet invented the perfect steel. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. 3V steel is harder, but it will also become dull eventually and needs to be sharpened. Sleipner is easier to sharpen. Both don't like moisture. Need to wipe dry. The knife should fit well in the hand. The best, most expensive knife when dull will be worse than a cheap but sharp one. Sharpening isn't exactly easy, but it's not atomic physics either. You need to invest in whetstones, paddle strop and stropping compound. A knife is a tool and you need to keep it in order.*

We're gunna need a historical cutting board montage. There is definitely a plethora of 'Bushcraft' knives about. My favourite Spanish company makes a few different types. I have that one you reviewed as well as one they call a Bushcraft knife that has a full Scandi grind.

I love the brutal honest about the internet sensation of bushcraft knives. I have the Puukko and I just took it on a 40ish mile backwoods trek but I honestly use it a lot more in my backyard cutting cordage and ripping up cardboard. Really enjoy the videos.

I just performed the same coconut test with my B40 and I had zero issues.... cracked it on the third whack with NO edge damage whatsoever. I think the problem you had in this comparison, was that the coconut rolled.

A bit late but, i did the same thing with the B40 and the M7, smashed the coconut too pulp and not even a mark on them.

Guess Benchmade has changed their heat treatment on this one. Both Benchmade and my vendor (Smoky Mountain) now list the Rockwell at 60-62.

I have the Benchmade and had a good look at the Lion Steel at the time of buying. The Benchmade sheath is awful. I agree that I like the dangler, but does not retain the knife. If it turns upside down, the knife falls out. If that happens in a pack, it is dangerous. The fire steel loop is also too small to take a standard size fero-rod, if that matters to you. The Lion Steel sheath is excellent. In Europe, value for money it is no comparison, Lion Steel is the better made knife and cost the same or less.
The Benchmade is way tougher than the Lionsteel--this is fact. The Lionsteel was humiliated in the video. I don't give a fuck about the sheath. Funny, you know all about the Lionsteel sheath and you didn't buy a Lionsteel. How come you didn't know about the Benchmade sheath before you bought the Benchmade? (I'm not even totally convinced you did buy one. But if you did, given your snotty comment, I don't know why you didn't return it.)

Do you have either of the knives shown? If so, what have been your experiences? Do you use the factory sheath or did you get a replacement? Why don't you care about potentially losing a knife, or getting cut? You are certainly entitled to not care, but it would help other folk reading this to know why.
I bought the Benchmade from a store in person, so I knew about the difference in sheaths, but I can make my own sheaths so it wasn't a deal breaker for me. Other people who have to buy on-line and can't make a sheath can only go by what they see or read in reviews and might care to trade some coconut chopping ability for security and safety. I didn't buy that Lion Steel at the same time because I bought one of their folders. I have since bought a B41 and B35. I wanted to try the Benchmade handle shape, blade shape, and most of all the steel. I like the blade shape on the Benchmade better than the Lion Steel, more point, less depth, easier to make tight turning cuts when carving. Didn't like the edge angle on either, too obtuse to cut wood well, but the Benchmade was thicker behind the edge before I re-worked the bevel angle. The steel has held up well, arguably better than my O-1 knives at similar edge angles.

@@profd65 did you even watch the video? the lionsteel won the majority of the tests, it made the benchmade look cheap in comparison. it's okay to like a company, but you don't have to defend them from criticism, people can make their own choices and criticism will help them make a better knife in the future, if they ever see it.

You are right about "Bushcraft" it is just an internet generated sensation including the Ray mears. So many knives and steels how far do you take it. I have been using Opinel No9 Carbon Steel since the early 80's and the Mora classic carbon blade. I prefer thin blades. I tried Fallkiven F1 Pro recently where I received as a present, great knife but it is too thick for some of my tasks.

I would have thought the softer steel is more likely to roll. Im not sure how thats worked. I can only think its because of the dodgy angle that the lionsteel hit the coconut.

Nope the Condor terrasaur is between 40 and 50 dollars, it fluctuates a bit.
The 3V has lower edge Retention but higher edge stability!

Isn’t victorinox 56 tough enough for general purposes, harder steel may be brittle. So for me victorinox steel is corrosion resistant tough and easy to sharpen. I don’t think 🤔 a steel that might snap is much use for a general purpose knife stroke multi tool, I guess victorinox know exactly what they are doing 👍🏻

Aahhh... you *must* continue to use that same cutting board.. switching it will invalidate future test comparisons against past comparisons because the wood does indeed also take a toll on the edge along with the rope. A harder/softer/different board will work edges differently going forward. Although, it probably is loaded with fine metal particles nowadays, so...
Please pop open a coconut with a harder 3v blade, Bark River, etc.. for direct toughness comparison to the Benchmade's softer heat treat.

Lionsteel M4 would be a better comparison instead of the B40. Lionsteel knife blades geometry sucks.Worst blade geometry of any of my knives.That's a shame because otherwise they would be perfect.

Benchmade totally destroyed lionsteel in that coconut test, it obviously has much more durable steel, on benchmade's official site it is 60-62 HRC, not 56 like you said, and it is definitely not softer still tan lionsteel, because lionsteels edge vas ruined after only 3 coconut hit, and benchmade cut it with no problem, also in wood carving benchmade was clear winner, I don't understand why you keep saying that it have bad heat-treatment and it is 56 HRC because that is just not the truth, and you can see it from tests...

Not to be that guy but in your toughness test you hit the lionsteel once more than the benchmade, and seems like the blade twisted out of the coconut? Kinda invalidated the results of you're gonna make the one do 25% more cutting and twist the edge
but then then benchmade did three more and cracked the coconut and still cut paper

Benchmade raise the 3v rockwell on the bailout for 2020 to 60-63. im not sure if they upgraded it for the Puukko or not. Benchmade wouldnt say more details. for the coconut, the benchmade has better geometry. had you used the bailout at 56hrc, it would have rolled.
most definitely, theres a lot of meat behind this edge compared to the bailout
But I would say using the two ouces bailout to cut open a coconut like that it is a whole new level of abuse, unlike when you are doing it with the bushcraft knife. I think the bailout softer steel is justified if you use it for light abuse like using it as a screw driver or can opener, the ultra fine tip could use the softer heat treat, but if you want to go fully abusive use like pry open a crater you should not use anything that weigh less than 4 ouces.

Easily, with a good heat treatment.. running 3V at approx. 56hrc is a joke.
HRC 60-62 on Benchmade's site. No mention of the garbage retention? A knife with a garbage sheath is a garbage knife. $40 minimum for a good sheath makes the Benchmade's real price $160-170 USD. Lots of other options out there.
