    Always love seeing people taking care of older guitars! Especially the older Stratocaster. It is really rare to find some of those anymore. There’s an 1986 bullet telecaster at my local guitar center for only $260, and a couple of 1980 Lead II series strats, along with a beautiful 1990s Fender Stratocaster with a pink with floral design finish on it (my mom really wants it but it’s nearly $900! Insane!) that looks to be in EXCELLENT condition. Had a chance to play most of them and they all played beautifully.

    Interesting. Sounds like you got another winner there! It sounded pretty dang good in your last video to be honest. Hard to say what to do to it. If it was me I'd do a refret, and a refinish in whatever color you prefer, sand the neck and sort that pickup out with whatever you want to do with it!

  • @fnersch3367
    @fnersch3367 Před 3 lety

    In doing the red stain in the bottom region the finisher ran into some problem and just left it. The rest of the refin seems quite good. Wish this guitar could talk. Very interesting Strat.

    Love these dissection videos Matt.! You owe it to this beautiful Strat to have it refinished back to a stock 59 Fender Burst color. If you could find original pickups to replace the neck and middle that would make this guitar as close as can be to stock. I say keep this bad boy as your backup 59! You are one lucky guy to have 2 of these. Peace!

    Referring back to your Neck Overspray video in May, and this Strat, you need some sort of polymerizing treatment to the wood to prevent oils from your hand staining the back of the neck. So, now that the overspray is off, figure out a good product to use. Maybe add a tint to match the yellow/amber aging of the old finish?

      That's the conclusion I came to as well. Just too much red or
      It would have came out a lot better. Would be a shame to cover up that nice grain it appears to have...maybe he could do a refinish in the 2 color sunburst of is main guitar! Could be a backup to his main one but one with a new finish for him to break in! ;)

    • @FL5_OGryan405
      @FL5_OGryan405 Před 5 lety

      I was wondering the same thing but I believe they just did the Mary Kay color...but other than a 2 or 3 color sunburst I was thinking exactly as you! Like an Aztec gold was my first idea and then I was thinking maybe Sherwood green or fiesta red. Not sure what year they used Sherwood green but it's an interesting color, not my first choice though that's for sure. But funny we were both on the same page with the Aztec gold!

    10:30 you never mentioned the off-centre seam, quite visible under the pick guard.
    That seems like an unusual Fifties feature on a trans finish?
    It's a nice looking strat body regardless, and if refinished a more subtle clear sunburst would be excellent.
    In the mid Sixties Fender was using more opaque yellow in the sun bursts to I guess hide the wood inconsistencies, would be better if they hadn't.

    When you first showed this guitar the other week it gave the impression that it was a guitar that had, had a lot of work on it - home custom type job - but what you showed today, showed that it is still in a fairly original condition and the people who did the respray had the fore-sight to leave the pencil marks in. I personally don't like the finish it has at the moment - I think it would be cool to strip the body and do a tradition finish that was in keeping with the time period but then again - is it worth doing that?

    Such a cool thing to verify it is original. As for being called a players grade, I would definitely call that a serious collector. And I would have it restored as well as it could be to original. It will naturally age again and when you are old it will look like you other one and be worth a fortune.

      40 years from now, when Matt is going to be in his 60's, those guitars will be a hundred years old and worth tens of thousands.

    • @MuscleDad420
      @MuscleDad420 Před 5 lety

      They already are tens of thousands. This generation is expected to make less than previous generations. Couple that with older boomer collectors divesting and the guitar market is going to be flooded with more and more examples of player and collector's grade instruments, and go through a big adjustment.
      You also have to keep in mind that civilization as we know it won't even exist in 40 years.
