"People would flat-out ask me, 'Don't you have any happy love songs?' Well, as a matter of fact, I don't. I've got songs about orphans and morphine addicts.".......and that, folks, is one of many reasons why she's such a brilliant beautiful artist. Bravo!

I agree . Someone asked my father one time why do you write so many sad songs? , and he said because those are the songs people want to hear . Gillian knows her music , that is for sure . She is a pure talent .

I'd say that in her songs, Gillian taps into certain eternal verities concerning the human condition, such as when, for instance, Miss Ohio laments: "Yeah, I wanna do right/but not right now." I mean, what can I say, Ms. Welch knows her St. Augustine.

I shudder to think what he could do on a guitar with a cutout. I once made a cutout in a cheap guitar when I was learning. I seem to recall Leo Kotke doing that with a '70's era Yamaha before cutout models were easily available. There were many copies of early Gibson arch top guitars. In the '70s you could buy some used Gibson arch tops for a few hundred bucks. They hail from the jazz combo and big band era before Les Paul got everybody wired.

I just don't understand the Newport crowds. Is there a policy against clapping for the bands? Can you not whoop and hoot when you hear the first notes from that song that you absolutely love!? Did I miss something? I mean, no, I don't have the money for Newport, but the sets are on average really great, and there's usually just a little smattering of applause at the end of a song. Simpletons...Gil's like, "can you hear us OK?" As in - we're up here rockin' it and you're all on your phones or too afraid to not be "cool."

Donald Austin Oh adendum: This is the same place that Dylan was boo'd for having the sac to bring an electric guitar on stage. Haha! Geesh...Sim-ple-tons...

+Donald Austin , if this audio is taken from the board, you may not hear the audience in the mix.

+Donald Austin - from the sound of it the recording is directly from the desk, which is why you wouldn't hear much crowd noise. But I can sure hear it between songs anyway.

I can hear the audience! Some of us also think that "whoopin' and hootin'" when you hear the opening chords is a repulsive habit that spoils many a concert! Anyway, how can you criticise the crowd at a venue you have never visited!?

Donald Austin I saw Gillian Welsh a few years ago . When she picked up the banjo i was the only one that cheered . She heard me and said " Some people get silly about the banjo "

Quick Silver Girl was used in The Strangers, a horror movie. I haven't seen it but I probably would not appreciate it much since I don't like slasher movies, or gratuitous violence and bloodshed.

I'm a guy who likes a chick who wears a Scots-Irish tartan dress while playing a banjo.
