  • Traditional song from the North East of England. Written by Robert Nunn (1808 - 1853) a roofer by trade until a freak accident cost him his site and two of his fingers so he turned to music.
I've arranged and re-arranged this song slightly, removing a questionable verse describing being threatened with a knife. In my version, I imagine a young mother describing a man she clearly loves to their child while he's at work.
The tune may be familiar. Stan Kelly adapted the song into Liverpool Lullaby which was sung by Cilla Black. Both are written to the tune of 'Dollia' which is a song about another lass from Sandgate who was popular with soldiers. You'll need to verify you're over 18 before I tell you any more about her.
Thank you for watching and listening and for reading this, if you are.
