Justin, I just purchased the mini 4 pro only two days ago, I'm a backpacker and I've never owned a drone before. Your how to track video was sooooo helpful with your simple explanations! Thank you!!!
Hey! That's amazing, you're going to love having a drone! I'm more than happy to help! Glad you got a lot of value from the video! Any questions just fire away 😁
Same here, it seems that it can do more then any of the ads from dji say it can. Im just waiting to get out and use mine now as only had it a few days and just had a few goes in the house
Justin, As a trainer, I love your tutorial content. It's clear, concise, thorough and well thought through, assuming no prior understanding. The level of fine detail and demonstration you include puts your content above any of the many others I've seen to date. Finally, your relaxed and personable delivery creates connection and fosters inclusion. 👌
I look forward to seeing more. Thanks so much.
Kaz, Sydney
Thank you so much Kaz. Comments like this really give me the fuel to keep putting out the content. I have a lot more planned for the Mini 4 Pro too. Hopefully even more helpful! Welcome to the Community 😁

Best active traction explanation! Good job Justin. Subscribed.
No problem! Happy to help 😃
I just found your channel. great video tutorial for Active Track. beautiful scenery there in SA. The timeline benchmarks are brilliant. I'm subscribing to your channel to see what other things you've done. All things are good. Merry Christmas my friend.
Thank you! I'm glad you found the video useful and enjoyed the scenery. The SA outback does have some beautiful locations! There's plenty more stuff on here and still to come! Merry Christmas to you too my friend! Welcome to the community 😁
Great review and very detailed! Thanks!
Thank you! Glad it was of value to you! 😁
Thank you. This was real helpful.
I've been kind of paranoid about using the active track feature mainly because I don't have any clear areas nearby that I can practice in.
Most online tutorials are done by folks who just assume that the viewers already have some sort of drone flying experience.
I'm not one of those experienced types.
You're more than welcome! I always try to cater my videos to suit a wide range of skillsets. If there's anything you need help with, just let me know and I'll talk you through it! 😁
Just love your videos, you are so clear and informative. Keep it up! 😎 👍🏻 🇬🇧
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying the content. I'm just trying to deliver high quality information in an easy to watch and enjoyable format 😁
Thanks for that, it was really helpful and very well explained which made it easy to take it all in 👍

Great test and demo of the Active Track Justin, also made it interesting, you have a new subscriber + Like
Thank you Shaun! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for subscribing, pleasure to have you around here! 😁
Very informative, thank you.
Thank you. I'm Glad you found some value in the video 😁
Having the Mini 3 and 4 Pro, your ‘tutorial’ posts are great to help stay up n everything. My Part 107 depends on it here in The USA so I appreciate all you’ve done. Going to try the goggles soon, holding my breath on how that will change things. I not interested in the Avata anymore because of the sound issues, and since they added FPV to the 4, and I’m so spoiled with the fly time and battery life of my Mini 3s and 4 Pro! Thanks for all you do!
You're more than welcome! I'm sure you'll have a blast with the Goggles. I have the Goggles 2 also but I use them with a freestyle and cinematic FPV drone. Hope you enjoy it!
Very helpful video! Great crystal clear explanations. Sub'd!
Thank you! Glad you found the video helpful! Welcome to the community 😁
Just subscribed, great videos, very helpful. Thank you
Thanks Andy! I'm glad you're finding the videos helpful! Welcome to the community! 😃
@@JustinBainbridgeYT Took the mini and goggles 3 and RC 3 out today, a whole new experience....going to take some getting used to, if you have any tips on binding controllers and what that means to DJI with regards to the kit in your arsenal, that would be good....im in IT and computer peripherals connect without all the hassle DJIs setup appears to go with, I have paid for the controllers for the Mini 3 pro, Mini 4 Pro, have care refresh and all devices show as part of my kit bag on the DJI device page online, however If and when I added the Motion RC 3 today, I had to unbind and bind the RC 3, but I don't always want to fly with that....any info or a vid would be appreciated Justin, cheers bud. :-)
Wonderful video !👏
Thank you 😁
Hey Justin…thank you for your video..I am new to all this but I love it so far… I crashed my mini 4 pro to a tree on my first active track attempt…your video was really helpful!!! I am going to try it again!!!
Hey! That's amazing. Welcome to the drone hobby! It's a lot of fun isn't it! Every crash has a lesson in it, so as long as you learn something, then you can have a better experience next time. I'm glad you found the video helpful! Good luck!! 😃
Thank you for your reply…it is lots of fun to fly a drone…I love travelling and I have big plans for my drone…I think in my case drone crashed at the back because brunches was too thin… I am going to watch your videos to learn more…next destination somewhere hot…at the moment I am flying over UK and the weather not the best over here😊
Hey Justin…can you recommend any program for editing videos??? Thank you
@doggyys6710 Sure. I use Adobe Premiere Pro for editing my videos but it takes a bit of learning, and there's a monthly fee. Some good free options are Adobe Rush and Caput which are both easy to use. Davinci Resolve also has a free version, but again takes a but of time to learn the ropes.
Dude I’ll say it again, as a new flier I started with the mini 2 Se just to get the bearings of flight. Great drone but limited for what I need it for. Got the M4P for the vertical and 360 tracking 🤘. What a machine brother💪. Thanks for breaking these videos down for us noobs to understand 😂. Great job brother
Haha thanks brother! No problem, I feel it's only right to try and help out my fellow drone fliers and help everyone get more out of their drone and better footage! I do love the M4P. Such a good drone! Thanks for the support bro! 🤙
nice tutorial. Thanks
Thank you 😁
Great explanation! Every time I use tracking in my back yard I end up cancelling it within a few seconds because it scares me near obstacles.
Thank you! The best way to avoid drone anxiety is just to let it do its thing and trust that it'll work. After a few flights you'll become much more aware of what it can and can't do and you'll be more comfortable with it 😀
Great tutorial, simple, straight to the point, awesome example; and, i'm not even an anglophone
Thanks for that! I'm glad you found it easy to follow and full of information. 😀
EXCELLENT VIDEO!
where are you with your drone If I may ask?
thanks mate, one of the best clear tutorial on activetrack settings i've seen on youtube. You've got a new subscriber. Btw, i'm not sure i can't turn on subject scanning in my settings. I've tried to google it but it seems even when i made sure i was in flight mode and in both normal photo and video mode i still can't turn it on. Any ideas why?
Thanks mate! Welcome to the community 😁
For Subject scanning, you need to be actually flying to turn it on. I hadn't realised it at the time, but it always defaults to being off when you turn on the drone. If you still can't get it to work, then you might need to do a firmware update. I had another guy who had the same issue, and it was resolved with an update. Let me know if you're still having issues!
Great video. I was just experimenting with mine yesterday, and laughed as well when it automatically ducked under a tree branch. Amazing technology packed into such a small device. I assume you were using parallel when tracking the truck?
It's so funny isn't it haha, makes you feel so much more at ease when using it. I was in trace when following the truck, I just positioned it off to the side to see how fast it would go until ducking in behind
Hi Justin ... enjoying learning how to get the most from the tracking functionality. Thanks again. One point, once activated, the tracking options are slightly different to the ones described in the tutorial - for example, there's Manual and Auto mode. Manual brings up the tracking 'wheel' with the two rings and with Auto the drone seems to switch automatically between stationary and moving in an arc to be parallel. I guess that's a functionality change after the creation of your video ... :)
Hey! Yes, they added Active track Auto around 3 months after the drone was launched. I made this video in the first month. But auto is a pretty simple feature to use, so I didn't feel it necessary to make an updated video. I'm glad you're enjoying learning about the drone. It's so capable, and there's a lot to dive into 😃
This one was helpful
I'm glad you found it helpful 😃
Very nice tutorial! Concise, clear and thorough information without the fuss. One aspect for the cyclists that bugs me, anyone with ideas on where to stick the RC while riding and tracking? It would move around and wouldn't look good hanging around the neck, in the bag screen or the sticks can be interfered.
Sure, there are some mounts you can buy for he bike's handlebars, I cant remember exactly what they are but I know that ther are some available for the RC-N1 and RCN-2, I would assume that there are also some for the RC2 - I would check amazon 😃
Great video. Does it have the tracking fuction where the drone just flies free style while tracking the moving object. Like the Mavic 3.
Hey, Thanks! No it doesn't do a random freestyle flight whilst tracking no. It will track based on your input or your movement 😁
Hi. great tutorial video. Im a rc plane flyer, i have a question if i use dji tracking mode and to follow my plane in the air it is possible? thank's.
Hi! Thank you! This would not work unfortunately, the plane is too small and too fast to be tracked effectively by the Mini 4 Pro. Hope this helps 😁
Fantastic! A clear and easy-to-follow guide! What is the title of the background music used in the cinematic part (15:02)?
Thank you! The music in that section is "Against all odds - Tiko Tiko"
Got yourself a sub. Wish other CZcamsrs would be straight and to the point and actually show how things work live like you do instead of just hanging out in their studio talking for 30 minutes with some fancy LEDs in the background and using stock footage
Hey! Thanks, I think there's a time and a place for studio filming, but with things like this, I prefer to just get out and actually do it. Makes more sense to me 😅
Nice video! When you're tracking your car, how do you bring the drone back? Is it manual entirely or is there some function to bring the drone back to where you are as opposed to home of course, which would be where you started I assume.
Hey, yep it's a manual flight back home or hit RTH to bring the drone back, no real issue. Or if you're a passenger in the car then you can just let it track you till you pull up and land 😃
handy guide thanks, just had my first little crash got away with though. anyone figured out a safe way to stow the controller while tracking? or is it best to just leave handy incase of issues?
Great video, I learned a few things… just curious about where you filmed this? Probably Australia although if I didn’t know you were Australian, I would assume this was someplace in Western Colorado, the US
Thank you! You were right with Australia. this was filmed in the South Australian outback, just next to the Flinders Ranges. A very beautiful place but lots and lots of flies 😂 I'm actually British but was in Australia for the last 2 years.
Best drone tracking presentation I've seen.
Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you got the value I intended from this video. Enjoy your Mini 4 Pro! 😁
Awesome video. What do you use to record your voice when you make these videos?
Thank you! I'm recording using the DJI mic connected to my phone. I then sync the audio to the drone footage in post-production 😃
Hi Justin and congrats for your very good video ! I'm wondering... would it be possible to have this kind of scenario with the drone : static shot of landscape with noboby, then automatic active track when someone is entering in the drone field of view (without activating it with the controller). Thanks in advance for your feedback :)
Hi Adrien! Thank you for the kind words, I don't think this would be possible, unfortunately. Active track needs to be locked onto a subject before it will work. You may be able to mimick this style of shot with some clever editing. However, it's beyond the limitations of this drone
@@JustinBainbridgeYT Thanks for your quick and precise answer that let me think about another particular case : let say we are in spot light mode, the drone is tracking someone who disappear behind a wall, who come back 5 sec. later. Does the drone will continue the tracking or do we have to re-activate it?
Just had my first flight and I was so amazed at how if flew through a tree dropping and gaining altitude on parallel mode. I couldn't get the wheel to come up for the active track. Not sure will try again after watching this video. I'm interested in what and how you set up a mic. Would love to be able to use with the drone as you do and also in a Motorbike helmet with the go pro.
You might need to do a firmware update for the wheel to come up. I had something similar with someone else and that solved it for them. I actually record using the DJI mic through my phone to film the videos but you can also connect the DJI mic to the RC2 and record audio that way too! With the Gopro 12, you can use a Bluetooth microphone. That might be worth looking into 😁
@JustinBainbridgeYT thanks mate not gonna worry about a mic this trip to much to learn and don't want to take away from my trip. Where are you working in WA? Doesn't look like a mining camp?
@Galvoflysoz yeah that's fair enough. The DJI mic is plug and play which is pretty straight forward. But do whatever you're comfortable with 😁 I was in SA, working at Rawnsley Park Station in the Flinders Ranges ⛰️
@JustinBainbridgeYT very nice mate. Looks very similar to some of the Pilbara regions. Nice scenery. I will do more research on mics and need to buy a mac to edit this 4k footage. My last cameras were go pro 1 and 2s hahaha.
Awesome. I don't need one at all but I really want one 😂
Haha I sense a delivery coming to your house soon 😂 have it follow you around and just make people think we're in a simulation. Actually that's a good idea for a video 😂 Taking my drone for a walk and seeing peoples reactions. Coming Soon 😂😂
Great tutorial! Thank you so much! I have a question though: Today, I tried to do a top shot of a person (a real top shot, straight down) and it was not possible to follow that person other than manual. Any idea on how to do it with the available functions? Thank you so much!
Hey! Active track from.a true top down is something that these drones do struggle with. I'm not too sure why but they do. Your best bet will be using parallel mode but I will do some more testing and report back on what works best
Thank you so much for your quick answer! And Christmas greetings from Thailand! I will try parallel today, but it's quite windy, so might have to delay a bit. Thanks!
@@JustinBainbridgeYT
@karlvandenhole9342 you're more than welcome. Ooo, I'm currently in Thailand for Christmas as well but haven't got got much flying done either due to the strong winds 😂
Christmas greetings from Krabi, where I live😃@@JustinBainbridgeYT 🎄🎄
@karlvandenhole9342 Merry Christmas to you too, from Koh Tao 🎅🏝
does mini 4 pro have vertical tracking 360, tks for your video
Yep, all the tracking features work in vertical as well! You're very welcome 😁
@JustinBainbridgeYT Justin (or anyone else), what setup are you using to record voice? Any tips for how to make it easier to later match up audio and video? I'm not talking about how to do it in an editor, but how to more easily manage later finding the matching audio clip for a video clip. Do you do something on camera that you later edit out or is simply a question of matching files by timestamps?
Hey! I record audio through a dji mic connected to my phone. I record a video using the phone and the drone and to sync them up I just make sure that they are both recording and can see me then I clap to create a sync point I can use to match the footage in post. Then I add both clips to the editor using the clap to get the timing the same. Then cut and edit from there with both peices of footage being in sync. Hope this helps.
Still testing my mini 4 pro and after the update i get options that didnt be there after unbox. If you do some active tracking like you do in the vid what is you press return home!? Will it fly away to the home point?
Hello! Yep, return to home will override the tracking and all the others too because it's kind of an emergency procedure
Bravo 👏 I am a new Drone/mini 4 owner. Question….how do you get your voice recordings while flying/recording? I am a professional Snake Wrangler in San Diego CA. My hope is to record sounds while on snake removal or snake relocation events. Any input would be appreciated
Hi! You can record audio through the RC2 controller. You just need to connect a USB-C Microphone to the port on the controller. Then to record audio you need to do a screen recording on the radio. The audio will be recorded to the screen recording. You can then match the audio of the screen recording to the footage from the drone in post production. Voila you now have audio.
@@JustinBainbridgeYT Very cool. Thank you! ☺️
2 questions: when I select a subject on the screen, my only option is "Parallel" and the circle on the left does not appear. Any suggestions?; also, I have an old GoPro Karma drone which follows the controller. Does the mini 4 pro have the option of just following the controller? It would help the problem of the drone confusing trees for subjects. The GoPro technology is from 2017, so I'm sure it's easy to do now in 2024.
This is very strange, are you on the latest firmware? There is no follow controller function but that would be an interesting idea. Would save the drone loosing the subject in the trees like you say!
can i use it with my dog? or only for person and vehicles?
I would imagine it would probably do half decent tracking a dog, as long as it's a larger dog and it's not running too fast
Question do you record vertically or landscape?
I record in Landscape for CZcams and Vertical for Instagram 😃
Does the active track work while shooting vertically?
Yep, all the active track features work in vertical shooting as well!
So on mini 3 it's locked to 30fps but on mini 4 it can go up to 60fps in active track?
Yes, this is correct
How does return to home work with active track?
Return to home works the same as normal, If you lose signal, aircraft will RTH. Low battery, you will get a warning that the aircraft is going to return to home, with the option to cancel it. if you manually activate it. It'll come back 😃
I cant seem to get the active track wheel to appear on my controller screen,is there something I'm missing in settings, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, the activetrack wheel should show up automatically when you click activetrack. I would check if you need a firmware update first
Just updated to the latest firmware today and I have the same issue. Where it should say ‘Trace’ and ‘Parallel’, I see 3 choices: ‘Auto’, ‘Manual’ and ‘Parallel’., an no wheel to select anywhere. Video in normal mode.
Are we able to use a Memory Card of 1tb???
You can use up to 512GB in the Mini 4 Pro
I've been scratching my head trying to activate subject scanning on my M4P and RC2. Whatever I try the button remains greyed out, and I am running the latest firmware update.
Hey, you can only activate Subject scanning once you're flying. Also it resets to off after each power up which is pretty annoying.
quick question
will it track a football?
I think a football is too small an object to be successfully tracked to be honest
By the way great video and review; I just bought one... plus what do u think of the dj refresh policy (insurance)
I have a problem with my mini pro 4 when trying to set active track. In the 'control' menu, when I switch on 'subject scanning' the "FocusTrack Settings" which is supposed to be underneath does not appear at all on the screen. Therefore I cannot access the inner and outer circles to set paraemters as they do not appear on the screen. When I go back to the main screen I see 3 icons: activetrack, spotllight and POI. When I press 'go' on activetrack there is ony a single circle with front, back, etc directions but no outer circle.. Any ideas?
Do you get the plus symbol on the screen to select a subject? If not you might have to manually select the subject still.
Thanks for your reply. Great channel by the way. Yes, I get the X symbol in green circle as seen in your video (e.g 4:31). Problem as mentioned I can't get into 'focus track' settings in 'control menu' , and there's nothing on the main screen icons showing for trace or parallel. It works fine for spotlight and POI. Is it true that activetrack only works for certain video settings?. @@JustinBainbridgeYT
@@user-cl8je1or6n how bizarre, maybe that's the case. I'll go and have a try and see what I can find for you
I just went to test a few things and I couldn't repeat this issue. I would suggest calibrating the compass and the IMU on the drone and also check if you're due a firmware update.
I just did a firmware update as you suggested and the problem has been solved. Thanks for your help! @@JustinBainbridgeYT
How high will active track work?
That depends on the size of the object you're trying to track. It's not an exact science but once an object becomes too small in the image. The drone will be unable to track it. A message will display on the screen when you're getting too far away from the subject
Thank you so much! If you're in Australia then you're up a little late...😊
You're welcome! I'm currently in Thailand so I'm a few hours behind 😅 otherwise I'd be burning the midnight oil for sure haha
My drone isn’t showing the little circle straight from box ? 🤔
Do you mean the Circle for changing the Active track position? If do you will need to do a firmware update on the drone
After owning this drone for almost 4 months now...... i STILL can't get the 360 wheel to appear on the controller screen ! It is impossibly confusing for me. 😖
Theat's very strange, have you contacted DJI support about the issue?
Mine says active shot not track how do I change it it don't follow
You might need to do a firmware update 😃
It’s not letting me turn on subject scanning
Hey! Subject scanning can only be turned on once in flight. And unfortunately, it defaults to off each time you turn on the drone
Thanks I got it
PERFECT MATE VERY HELPFULL ,BUT A LITTLE ADVISE WHEN YOU LEARN YOU HAVE TO QUICK BUT WHEN YOU TEACHING YOU HAVE TO BE A BIT SLOW YHANK YOU
you willl crash guaranteed if around multiple tree branches.
Im a new subscriber by the way and great video.im definitely getting this drone and u explain things way better than any of these other videos ive watched 💯
Hey! Welcome to the community 😃 You're going to love the Mini 4 Pro, it's such a good drone! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos and getting something out of them 😃
I admit it's fantastic for cinematic shots. But.........if I were to let you try follow-me on my $135 drone you would be very surprised how much more practical, user-friendly it is on a bike tour. I've seen many people who got soon annoyed by how time consuming DJI's active-track is in real life having to stop when it loses you, or to use the touchscreen.
Now I must say my drone just happens to be one of the very few with a correctly programmed follow-me feature. Most cheap drones are worthless. I wish the camera and gimbal were a little better.
Good video justin,u make thinks easier to understand
Thank you! I do try to break things down into to easy to understand bites 😀
Justn im thinking bout getting the mini4 pro, is it worth buying
Hey! 100% worth buying in my opinion. It's the best bang for buck drone out there at the moment. I have no regrets about buying this drone 😀
Thank u
