  • The North York area of Toronto is a diverse neighborhood consisting of many residential towers, local businesses, ethnic cuisines, and transit centers. I take a walk along Yonge Street to explore all the sights and sounds.

Ken this is an extraordinarily awesome walking video! I have friends who live in the Willowdale area of North York (Yonge and Sheppard - there is a subway stop for this area) and another couple who have just bought and will soon move in!! There is a huge Korean influence in the area with restaurants but in Willowdale there is actually a large Jewish population. My guess is that you will see the small buildings along Yonge come down and new buildings going up with retail in the street level shops and suites above. The rent along Yonge for the little ethnics restaurants must be enormous. Friends who in North York love everything that the area offers and the only exception is the design of the massive roadways - often called stoads - along Yonge. There is a plan to change that and make the multi lane roadway smaller (removing a couple of the lanes) although that won't be accomplished for the next couple of years. It will soften the loud roadway and make the area feel more like a connected neighbourhood. Friends love the food choices in this area! I have eaten out at several of the Korean restauarants near the Yonge and Sheppard area and they were all fabulous! Five Guys doesn't do much for me! It sure is an area full of high rise office and residential towers isn't it?!! Are there too many? Maybe! But like my own city of Vancouver, development is huge and will just keep on going. There is so much to see walking in this area! I love that! It's so interesting and I have never got bored after many walks out in this part of North York. The only thing I will say that is different for me is that in being from Vancouver we aren't as "pro Tom Hortons" as they are in places like Ontario and cities in Alberta. Vancouver is a huge coffee meca and we love independent coffee houses and people would probably opt for Starbucks over Tims but we still have many Tim Hortons cafe/restaurants!! To live in North York you have pretty much anything you could possibly need with restauarants, essentials, groceries, movies, clothes shopping, sports supplies, specialty stores, you name it!! I do prefer the Downtown area of Toronto and love the Wellesley area (Cabbagetown - the home are so beautiful) but this is also an area I like. Thanks so much for the fabulous video!! I really enjoyed it a lot! I will definitely watch it again!! I am loving your visit to Toronto!! Cheers Ken!!

Growing up in the 50's in what was then Newtonbrook now North York, my parents lived in a house my dad built by hand in 1947 after WW2 on Connaught Ave, took him 3 years to build as money was scarce, my grandparents lived in a farmhouse on what is now Moore Park Ave, then just a cart track. There was not much around but open fields, but as a boy there was much fun & things to do with no worries of safety. I'd ride my bike down to Northtown Plaza to go to Cole's Book Store, Keith's Hobby Store, dad would buy my cloths at Dempsey's Hardware, once a year boots & overalls, all on Yonge St. Today I no longer take a ride down Yonge St, I don't recognize a thing, so much history of the area has been lost....so sad but, only thing left is memories.

Another great walk, AK! 8:59 That's one of the old Toronto pizza chains I would have advised you to try, rather than Pizza Pizza. Mother's has been around since the first place on St Clair Avenue in 1957. Or, I would have recommended this one 32:09 Pizza Nova, another old Canadian chain from 1963 that has good pizza. Or Pizzaiolo, which you've walked past a few times in your Toronto videos. There are about 20 Wendys in the Toronto area, I believe, which is not a lot compared to some chains. Good fast food burgers and sides. Boston Pizza started as a Western Canadian chain in Edmonton, back in 1964. Not my favourite pizza restaurant, personally.

Of the old pizza chains, I prefer Mamma's Pizza. Both Mamma's and Pizza Nova are still family run, although there are franchisees. Pizzeria Libretto is a newer small chain that offers certified VPN Neapolitan style pizza. They just happened to open a location here 12:29. You can't see it but it's in that building. I haven't tried Pizzaiolo yet. I've never tried Boston Pizza and don't have any plans to. I don't know why they chose that name when they don't have anything to do with Boston.
