One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Pandora bought me here in 2023. I’m playing it on guitar in honor of my wife. Cancer took her at 44. Makes me cry.
Had only ever heard 3 Pogues songs before.. (not gonna pretend to be a Poges fan just because Shane's dead) only first heard this song a couple of weeks ago after watching Shane's funeral. How has this most beautiful song I've ever heard been around for nearly 40 years and I've never heard it. I was totally blown away the first time I heard it and can't stop listening to it
I am not proud to say that I had never heard of the Pogues before Shane's death. Since then I've been listening to these songs and they are amazing. I can't stop listening to this one either. "Still there's a light I hold before be/You're the measure of my dreams" is so mesmerizing -- I can't get that lyric out of my mind. How haunting and pure and true
it do not matter ..how u found the Pogues Agus Shane ....I saw him first in London Town ...drank in his pub Filthy mC Nastys.on Amwell St...all I ever said to him was How's it going...saVage music
This is a masterpiece of a song and people will be playing it much more because it deserves the credit, powerful song Hits the soul and heart, he tells his own life stories in songs and what I loved about Shane was he didn't care who judged or looked at him differently he is now a legend singing to the angels enjoy paradise Shane ❤🙏 💚🇮🇪🍻
I've been loving you a long time Down all the years, down all the days And I've cried for all your troubles Smiled at your funny little ways We watched our friends grow up together And we saw them as they fell Some of them fell into Heaven Some of them fell into Hell I took shelter from a shower And I stepped into your arms On a rainy night in Soho The wind was whistling all its charms I sang you all my sorrows You told me all your joys Whatever happened to that old song? To all those little girls and boys Sometimes I'd wake up in the morning The ginger lady by my bed Covered in a cloak of silence I'd hear you talking in my head I'm not singing for the future I'm not dreaming of the past I'm not talking of the first times I never think about the last Now the song is nearly over We may never find out what it means Still there's a light I hold before me You're the measure of my dreams The measure of my dreams Source: Musixmatch
No one. word can describe the beauty brilliance and the ability Shane had to sing . Master of his craft loved by many . An integral part of Irish culture. 2023 took many of our hero’s away but they ll never leave us as their music transcends the generations
The saxophone here adds mood and majesty. I think a cornet is in the album version. Great song and the Pogues knew just how to dress up these melodies and words.
We were brought up with the pouges, all our lives at any family gathering or event some1 would sing a pouges song or they would be played, cant explain how much he ment to my family, thanks for all the music and memories, and now im a father my kids will no the words of this genius, rest in peace tipperary boy 💙 💛
I only heard Rainy night in soho, on desert Island disc's a few month's ago and fell in love with it sent it to my niece to check out,she also loves it.Can't believe this wonderful poet has now gone but we will never stop playing his music now! R.I. P. LOVE TRISHA
Beautiful song, so poignant to a lot of people, the words are amazing , Shane was amazingly talented bless him. What a great band .. seen Shane and the Pogues once it was at the Feila in Belfast where I'm from , the memory will stay with me forever, that was 25 yrs ago. Rest in peace Shane you will never be forgotten x
i can't even sing this song with have at least one tear in my eyes. one of the greatest songs of all the times. thanx shane mcgowan. i hope to meet you one day.
To think, if Nick Cave hadn’t retrieved this song from Shane’s waste paper basket in his Soho flat when they were drinking one night, had Shane sing it, love it and convince Shane it was a blinder, this would never have even been recorded....
I don't think he was talking about this song, I think he was talking about in general how he had great songs that he wrote and threw in a garbage pile because he didn't take the creative process seriously
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VOICE IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD!! WHICH WILL REMAIN IN MY HEART FOR HERE & BEYOND!!! LUV U 2 BITS FROM OZ ;-) USED TO GIVE U PLENTY OF AIRPLAY BACK IN THE 8O's WHEN I DID COMMUNITY RADIO ON THE EAST COAST OF N.S.W. :-)
around 1985 ish a friend of mine, left this cassette in My car. He never got it back. Been one of My top three favorite bands since. In a side note, I was at an Elvis costello concert in around 1985 and We were waiting for Elvis to come out the back door . We waited about an hour after the concert. There was this Girl also waiting for Elvis sitting on a short brick planter wall. When Elvis car came out She got up and got in the car. I then recognized it wair Cait O Roiden the bass player from the poges who was at that time either his wife or almost his wife. I never said a word to Her. I missed out. I dont see Her here
That man has more talent in his little finger that you probably have in your whole body.He can smack his gums and screw the lyrics up all he wants ,he is special ... are you joe????
Never will a song be written again as perfect as this RIP Shane 🥰🙏

Indeed a beatiful and great country ireland, with warm and nice people. Shane RIP from a Spanish fan.

Poetry
I've been loving you a long time
Down all the years, down all the days
And I've cried for all your troubles
Smiled at your funny little ways
We watched our friends grow up together
And we saw them as they fell
Some of them fell into Heaven
Some of them fell into Hell
I took shelter from a shower
And I stepped into your arms
On a rainy night in Soho
The wind was whistling all its charms
I sang you all my sorrows
You told me all your joys
Whatever happened to that old song?
To all those little girls and boys
Sometimes I'd wake up in the morning
The ginger lady by my bed
Covered in a cloak of silence
I'd hear you talking in my head
I'm not singing for the future
I'm not dreaming of the past
I'm not talking of the first times
I never think about the last
Now the song is nearly over
We may never find out what it means
Still there's a light I hold before me
You're the measure of my dreams
The measure of my dreams

Beautiful lyrics. Thank you. This song is a poetic masterpiece. Love Shane and the Pogues. I close my eyes and I’m in pure bliss. RIP Shane 💚🎶💔
I hope one day I can watch this again without crying. Goodbye Shane.
Shane you were the Light of all IRELAND 🇮🇪 a brilliant man and beautiful soul and the best band in the world period.
You don’t write a song like this without being regarded as one of the greats. What a song, what an artist and what a man 👏🏻💚
Shane is a poet of the highest order. Brilliant.
This really is a one of a kind piece of music. An absolutely beautiful song, possibly perfect. RIP Shane, the measure of our dreams 🇮🇪🍀🍻
Yep.
My Favourite Pogues song, very emotional listening to it now. Rest in Peace Shane, I'm sure it'll be Heaven you will fall into ❤️🙏❤️
Very nicely said 🙏🏻
why, there is irish party in hell.
Doesn’t get much better than this
“You are the measure of my dreams”; what more can one say to someone you love, a universal sentiment and a very Irish way of saying it.
One of my favourite lyrics of all time, the ultimate compliment
Words worth more than they are even currently known.
@Alex O'hara Ouais, ouais ! Don't SPOIL our enjoyment, please !!!
An ode to whiskey.... the measure of my dreams....
It grabs me by the heart every single time.

We didn’t know at the time just how great this song was… 😢
So so true. We were wild and young and just… liked it. Now it’s treasure
Speak for yourself.
Yes we did. He was a genius songwriter and one of the great poets.
yeah we did, even though I was an idiot with everything else at the time I knew this was the greatest love song ever written the first time I heard it
I knew how wonderful this song was. I dare say many realized this was a masterpiece. Thank you Shane. RIP 🍀💚
The Irish poet of his generation....No one even close....See you always in a way...
I do believe this is the most exquisitely depressing tune I’ve ever heard , and I love it
❤
Music don’t get any finer. God bless you Shane.
You are so right.

My god. Pure Magic. RIP Mr MacGowan. Thank you for sharing your genius.
The saxophone here adds mood and majesty.
I think a cornet is in the album version.
Great song and the Pogues knew just how to dress up these melodies and words.
Beautiful
As usual, Shane McGowan exemplifies everything that is just talent beyond compare. I am a lifelong fan of the Pogues
Me too Aoife, well said. And this TV series was good - had some great acts on it. I think the compare called himself "Mr Smith"
if it gets better than this I am yet to find it. Shane was the best songwriter of his generation and a poet for the ages.
One of the best songs ever wrote will have it played at my funeral.
lol great idea
So will I
It was played at his. 😢
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.

the Grace of God, their sublime album.
A song hasn’t been written this good in decades
shane's best lyrics in my opinion
Gives me goosebumps every time!
Same here
It's a rainy night in seaside, Oregon and I'm stoked I'm listening to this song!! The pogues rule!! Beautiful
Shane's the man! He just doesn't give a single f! The one and only true folk punk rocker.
He bridged that many genres ,rock, folk, punk, poetry...with an irreverence unsurpassed. He is a true genius. ☘
Have a search on here for The Singing Loins. Not the one and only, but one of the real ones for sure.

jem smashed his banjo
Was that supporting Elvis Costello?
@@johnkeenan5005 No, they would have been the main act. Not sure if they had support though
thought u wer gonna say funeral ;)
Elite. His and their finest song.
Maybe the most poetic and beautiful lyrics in any song

The wind was whistling all it's charms.. Damn. Only the Irish.
An awesome performance all around. The Pogues didn't get any better than this.

Something so simple, anyone could have come up with
But something so beautiful, only he could have come up with
Some of them fell into heaven, some of them fell into hell! Genius on a level we won't see again 😢
This line has ALWAYS killed me. I tear up every time at it
I’ll miss a lot about Shane, but what I’ll miss most is that smile
