  • On Indigenous Peoples Day, Laura reports from “He Sapa‘’, the sacred Black Hills of South Dakota where NDN Collective is reclaiming ancestral lands to address homelessness, addiction and violence against Native Americans. Catalyzed in 2020, by an action in which Land Defenders blocked former President Donald Trump’s road to Mount Rushmore, this Landback campaign is about reclaiming, along with stolen land, native ceremonies, spirituality and traditions of community care. In this special feature, Laura reports on Camp Mniluzahan, a tipi village built on tribal trust land, that welcomed hundreds of unhoused Indigenous people and others in the Rapid City area in the dead of winter last year. Among Laura’s guests, Oglala Lakota activists Nick Tilsen, Krystal Two Bulls and Sunny Red Bear of NDN Collective.
[Camp Mniluzahan] is... a teaching moment [about] what could happen. We're envisioning what could be if we actually had control of our lands and what it would mean to have land back.
Sunny Red Bear, Director of Racial Equity, NDN Collective; Lakota from the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation
“Mount Rushmore is not a statue that you can topple. It's not a flag that you can lower. It's not a painting that you can take off the wall. The only way to achieve justice in this situation is to return the land.”

As a human being, its natural for natives to want to return to our ancestral ways and to our ancestral lands. 👍 Land back!

Thank you for reporting on this! People need examples of the world Indigenous Peoples are trying to (re-)build and this is a very powerful one. What colonialism calls "services" are actually functions of a healthy, connected culture where people are look out for one another and the earth. That could be elevated now to a larger scale but we have to listen to the people who still maintain a semblance of how their elders did it #LANDBACK nowwwww

I am hoping Department of the Interior will give concurrent jurisdiction for ALL federal lands to native peoples so that they have a say in terms of permits, etc. Maybe even preferential treatment in staffing parks, national monuments & forests. Many areas that are very sacred places and stolen - like everything else. How can we say "land of the free" when built on stolen land with stolen labor?

People get angry when you live rent free in your car in the USA. I've experienced it myself traveling to 48 states between 2018 and 2020.
It's embedded in American cultures that you always need to be working. Others are programmed to punish you in small ways if you're act like a human being instead of a human doing.

Should we create dedicated lands for the homeless? Primitive homesteads where the indigent carve out an existence from raw undeveloped land.

Land Back is a movement that only exists in the United States; here in Latin America there is no need for any of that. There are only peasant movements, but beyond that, indigenous people live in Catholic villages working for a boss and holding carnivals.
