In a new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic thriller from the producers of The Invisible Man, a girl with extraordinary pyrokinetic powers fights to protect her family and herself from sinister forces that seek to capture and control her.
For more than a decade, parents Andy (Zac Efron; Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile; The Greatest Showman) and Vicky (Sydney Lemmon; Fear the Walking Dead, Succession) have been on the run, desperate to hide their daughter Charlie (Ryan Kiera Armstrong; American Horror Story: Double Feature, The Tomorrow War) from a shadowy federal agency that wants to harness her unprecedented gift for creating fire into a weapon of mass destruction.
Andy has taught Charlie how to defuse her power, which is triggered by anger or pain. But as Charlie turns 11, the fire becomes harder and harder to control. After an incident reveals the family’s location, a mysterious operative (Michael Greyeyes; Wild Indian, Rutherford Falls) is deployed to hunt down the family and seize Charlie once and for all. Charlie has other plans.
The film also stars Kurtwood Smith (Amityville: The Awakening, Hitchcock), John Beasley (The Purge: Anarchy, The Sum of All Fears) and Gloria Reuben (Lincoln, Mr. Robot). The Firestarter score is composed by the legendary John Carpenter (Halloween, Christine, The Fog) and his fellow Halloween franchise composers Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies.

The internet has accelerated the perception of time. There's so much information and we're constantly informed about things. Zac is already 34 years old. In the 80s he'd be expected to be a parent to around 3 kids already but Zac is a millennial. Millennials are an entirely different generation of young adults many of which choose to be childless and single.

Yeah, if you read the book, Charlie reads more like a middle ground between the childishness of Drew's performance and the darkness of this one. I have high hopes.

I’m in filmmaking and unfortunately they do this because a movies formula nowadays is 20% action 80% filler. So they tend to show the action in the trailers to draw you in which is the 20% of the full movie. Shitty formula used to be 40/60

Cool! I always thought this should be re-made with updated special effects. The original was an under-rated classic. Keys to the success of the re-make are the chemistry between Charlie and her dad, some adherence to the source material, a strong music score and updated special effects.

The fact that they got John Carpenter & Co. to do the score is WILD to me. And just goes to show you that Blumhouse is truly a production house that is by the fans & for the fans. Anyone not familiar with the backstory behind the original Firestarter movie and John Carpenter’s “almost” involvement should go check it out. Screenrant has an excellent write-up on it. John Carpenter’s involvement in this is truly a very cool moment in the name of MOVIE JUSTICE. Happy to see Blumhouse made this happen !

The older rendition of "Firestarter" was already enormously engaging. Drew Barrymore blew me away with her acting as Charlie like she did at that tender young age.
Well, it isn't as if acting chops didn't run in the family....
how cool would it have been that she returned as Charlie's mother :) I remember somewhat having a mild crush on her as a kid of 12 myself at that time. She was some kind of superhero to me.
But I hope they're telling a more cohesive story now and it just doesn't show bits and pieces that seem to be fragments out of her life like the original one.

I always wondered if Carrie and Charlie were related. In the book Carrie’s power is genetic, present in both her parents but recessive in her mother Carrie‘s grandmother was described as being a fire starter and I always wondered if telekinesis and Pyrokinesis were connected to the same gene pool that came from Carrie‘s family and Charlie’s
I also thought this and read a theory that brought it up. I think I remember something about how all King characters have the Shine but it just works differently and not as powerful in other characters

In the book firestarter Charlie has all kinds of different psychic abilities but the fire is the strongest.
I don't think so. Charlie's powers come from the altered genetics of both her parents, after they unknowingly participated in an experiment to give people psychic abilities. They were not born with any kind of powers.

I remember this being the first book I read by Stephen King when I was 13, then I rented the video from the library and Drew Barrymore, who is my same age, was Charlie and she was perfect for the role. I’m glad this is being re-made.

Halloween Kills was garbage and they scored that so I wouldn’t say it means the movie will be good. They are great composers and the soundtrack was great but horrible movie.

Took a look on IMDB and it's Cody Carpenter, not old man John himself. That being said. I think they've worked well on their recent albums. If I'm not messing up my Carpenters.
But also. Yeah. Judging a movie based on the composer is usually not a great metric. I mean. I think it will have a great sounding soundtrack, yes. But he's not exactly doing screenwriting, directing or editing.
Fun fact: Firestarter was going to be John Carpenter's follow-up film to The Thing, but he was replaced after The Thing bombed at the box office.

I imagine a lot of it came down to casting Charlie because Drew was eight during shooting, Ryan was 11. I suspect the CGI also allows a more faithful representation of Charlies powers, and that they could use CGI where it isn't safe to use around Ryan.

@@MamaMOB I've seen the original. Drew Barrymore was awesome, but the effects weren't so great since technology at that time wasn't sufficient enough. It was pretty great though. I'm expecting far greater effects from this new adaptation.

Great up and coming actress. She was so good in AHS playing the ruthless and evil brat! 😂😂
That scene where she convinced Lilly Rabe's character to take the pill knowing she didn't have any talent was sooo good.
Alma was a sociopath on AMS, she can play those creepy child roles well.
She was also the little girl in IT Chapter 2 with the birthmark on her cheek.

Watching this made me want to reread it also. I read it back in ‘83 when I was 13, so there’s a lot about it that I don’t remember. I’ve seen the Drew movie but I’m sure a lot was changed for the movie. Fingers crossed with this one.

I am not a fan of remakes, but if it keeps the momentum/acting going, this looks like it can do the book justice! Many people dismiss Zac Efron because of the Disney ties, but he can really immerse himself in roles, so I think he might pull it off nicely. The young actress was impressive in these previews, so I'm actually a bit excited to see how this gets pulled off.
Kids made fun of me because I had been reading since I was 18 months old, so I spent my 3rd grade reading classes in the back of the classroom reading Carrie, Firestarter, Tommyknockers, and It, and those were the books that allowed me to escape it all. Firestarter is such a great book!

Say what you want but I LOVED this movie. So many critics bashed the movie but I don’t understand why. The story may not have stayed true to the original but I found it entertaining. Instead of starting off with them on the run, they showed what happened leading up to it. I liked that it incorporates both her parent’s abilities too. And the scene involving Essie was moving. I do wish she had saved Irv from the shop on his front lawn like the original but you can’t please everyone. Originals will always be the best. Much better remake than the Pet Sematary remake.
When reading the Institute, I felt like it was a secret sequel to Firestarter. Don’t get me wrong, but it has similarities about powers and being experimented on. I’d say, I would give The Institute a chance for film adaptation. But furthermore, I can’t wait to see this!
I could barely get through The Institute. The final act was pretty good, but that book seemed to drag and was so full of cliches. Honestly, huge King fan, but Outsider (and Later, too I guess) has been his only really great book in the past decade or so. 11/22/63 was 2011, and that's one of my favorites, but I digress.

I thought The Institute was phenomenal. I agree that his recent work is lacking but I actually thought The Institute was the best one lol.

This is a remake of the same name in 1984 with George C. Scott, Richard Dreyfuss, and Martin Sheen to name a few. I generally like the 1984 film adaption of King's book.

It was that line that someone quoted elsewhere that originally got me to read the book. And I'm glad T did; it was a lot better than I feared.

This was I believe the second Stephen King book I ever read and it's very special to me, one of his best. If they fuck this all up I swear I'm driving to Maine and having a long overdue heart to heart with Stephen King.

this was actually not bad, the tension was just right, and Carpenter's score was amazing... special effects were acceptable as well, characters needed more fleshing out, but it's not this horrendous film that some say it is either

I loved the original movie and I'm happy that this one looks like they're making an authentic effort. I never thought I'd say that I look forward to a remake of a movie that I loved so much.

Okay I was a little skeptical when I seen another fire starter movie coming out. But it was overall a pretty damn good movie definitely worth the watch. I think I still like the original one better of course original is always better usually. But this was really really good. Impressed. I would give it a 8 out of 10
I love how this also explores the journey of a girl learning to navigate her own power and weight of her emotions while also allowing her to form her own decisive opinions her experience. Such a neat story.

This is my favorite movie, Drew Barrymore rocked it as Charlie back in the day. It’s also one of my favorite Stephen King novels, I can’t wait to see this!!!

among many many other fictions, this concept of fire ability is actually in tune with the character and impacts both poetically and physically.
the little girl is unstable, her rage manifested in her fire which she only uses when she feels the rage. you wont be burned by her if you yourself dont invoke the fire within her.
this is a promising factor to make a good story not simply like some superhero movies where: here we give you the drama and here we give you the superpower, which is like adding chocolate to rice. it doesnt fit.
but this movie, seems going to be a solid cheese cake

Wow , this remake looks good as hell, closest to Drew Barrymore's 1984 Fire Starter, i love Stephen kings originals and remakes.

Another great Stephen King story. The people at the facility probably had good intentions but the method was too heavy handed and violent. In society the girl would end up being killed because she couldn't control or harness her powers. Maybe they could have helped her but not by trying to abduct her and killing her mother.
I love how this little girl is a better actress than most of these grown actors
She probably doesn't have a huuuuuuuuge ego or hired an even bigger PR dept telling her how wonderful an actor and God's gift to the world she is.

Firestarter has always been a favourite of mine. The slowed bullet effect scene in the original was fantastic.
Can't wait to see what they do with the Charlie burning down The Shop sequence because that scene was so badass in the original, especially the music.

Want to watch this at some point. Read the book over a hundred times. I wonder if this version will include all of Charlie's powers (in the book she has aspects of both her parents' original powers (psychic influence/mind reading and telekinesis).

This is considered horror...it's Stephen King. Consider this...you have a girl glaring at you, screaming bloody murder as her hair flies around and she sends a giant, lethal wall of scorching heat and flames at you. That, my friend, would be horrifying, and that my friend, would give you nightmares if you survived it. It's horror. And lets not forget that she doesn't want to hurt anyone, but...hmmm...on second thought she kind of likes it.

I was out for a walk one day and unknowingly happened upon the shoot for this movie, the exterior of the school. The fire truck could be from the local FD but whether the firefighters are extras or actual FD members I don't know. Our firefighters don't have names one their gear.
