spike was not blaming buffy. she asked him why he got his soul and he explained his reasons to her. that’s not him placing the blame on her, it’s just a fact. he asked her “it’s what you wanted, right?” and then looks to the sky (to god) and asks “it’s what YOU wanted, right?” which is essentially him asking buffy if this is what he needed for her to finally love him (because she could never love him without his soul and he realized that) and he is asking god if this is what was required for him to be able to be saved.

The scene at the end with Spike is one of the best from the show. People talk of favourite episodes, but I think favourite scenes are more important. We had in Prophecy Girl Buffy saying 'Im 16 years old I dont want to die'. And Passion we had the scene with Angelus looking through the window at Buffy and Willow crying after hearing Jenny was killed enjoying their pain. In Enemies we had Angel pretending to be Angelus where he and Buffy fooled Faith. S5 just contains so many brilliant scenes but stand out are Fool For Love when Buffy says to Spike 'you're beneath me', and when Buffy says 'mommy' in the Body. We also had the amazing shock reveal that 'Death is Your Gift' which was of course Buffy's death in The Gift. Spike's monologue at the end here is a stunning scene James Marsters absolutely nails it, brilliant acting.

I think you need to change your pov when you think Spike made an error on changing himself for someone else. It doesn’t apply here.
That concept is only a problem or only applies when we say people shouldn’t lose their identity or authenticity or turn to something toxic.
Spike is doing neither. He changed back to his true self as William, and secondly being inspired by love to change into a better person should always be encouraged especially if the transformation makes you a better person.
Lastly he wasn’t putting the blame on Buffy on what he did. The entire scene is supposed to be revelation that he actually was capable of love without a soul and he choose to get his soul back unlike Angel who as Angelus would never, which says alot about whose really evil between the two but the fact that when he chose to get his soul what he didn’t expect is the pain of guilt “angel should have warned me” and contrition that comes with it, “they put the spark in me and all it does is burn” William’s shame of raping Buffy is far worse than probably a normal man will feel because it’s the antithesis of who William is as a person and the final imagery of him laying on the cross and burning and saying “can we rest”, the physical burn doesn’t compare to the spiritual and emotional pain of contrition he feels and the fact that he willingly rests on the cross is him embracing not just god, he’s embracing his soul, but embracing his pain to prove to Buffy I’m back, I’m sorry, this is real, can we stop now. Truly Shakespearean.

Since it seems you didn't get a lot of the last scene...
Spike at first take off his shirt and says "costume didn't help. Couldn't hide" he did his hair like he did in the past, dressed up, like he was trying to wear a costume of his former self, when he was soulless, but that didn't help at all to hide what he became with a soul.
When he says "Am i flesh to you?" he was referring to how in season 6 she merely used him for sex, like he was nothing but flesh without the spark (the soul).
"the girls doesn't wanna be serviced, because there is no spark", Buffy stopped being intimate with him when she realised that their relationship was sick and broke it because he didn't have a soul and so she couldn't love him.
"I dreamed of killing you. I think they were dreams" after Buffy died in season 5 finale he dreamed her every night saving her because he thought it was his fault that she died, in fact in each dreams he did something different and rescued her every night in his dreams.
"Thinking of you, holding myself and spilling useless buckets of salt over your ending" he cried a lot (buckets of soul) when she died, it destroyed him.
"Angel should have warned me" no explanation needed.
"They put the spark in me and now all it does is burn" he got a soul back and it's killing him for the guilt he feels.
"Buffy, shame on you." he simply stating that the fact that she question him is insulting enough since it's the most obvious thing in the world, because he loved her.
"To be the kind of man that would never-" that would never assault and hurt her, he can't even look at her while he mentions it.

Spike didn't put anything on Buffy's shoulders. The whole scene is about him laying the guilt on himself. He was confused because when soulless he assumed things would be better and him getting a soul would be what Buffy wanted. Now he's seeing the truth of her confused, horrified and upset PTSD emotions play out. Nothing he said was about him saying he said it was Buffy's fault. It was actually him finally understanding, with a soul, what he couldn't without; understanding what some fans still don't get about soulless Spike. @blackkatt777 Před měsícem +8

I know you've rewatched the scene in editing, but here is my take on this episode concerning Spuffy.
I've always believed that William was supernatural like Druscilla was before she was turned by Angelus.
William was an empath, which also explains why Dru was instantly drawn to him when she felt it, on the night he bumped into them.
Who they were before turning...their essence is locked into their brain like muscle memory. It's seeped into their brain like DNA.
Their demons used their supernatural gifts to their own hunting advantage and actually draws out those skills to the maximum.
Spike knew exactly how to manipulate the gang in ssn 5 because he is very intuitive. He could see what the others couldn't. (He pointed out how Willow was barely holding it together when Oz left) for example.
His connection with Joyce was real, even without his soul or a chip.
Forgiveness from God and Buffy with hopes that he would be worthy of her in his souled state is what inspired him to fight for his soul.
The chip muzzled his demon, almost like quieting his mind so he could let those echoes of his former nature come out.
"Buffy. Shame on you. What would a man do to become hers. The kind of man who would nev...") he was so ashamed that he couldn't even say the "R" word...because William would have NEVER R*ped her.
He wasn't blaming her, but asking for forgiveness from her and God.
Him laying himself on the cross shows the parallel between Spike/William and Liam/Angel/Angelus.
Angel let Buffy's necklace cross burn him to control HIMSELF when they kissed. Also..when he warned Kate to stay out of his way, he grabbed her cross to show how it sizzled his flesh, as a warning that she's not ready to deal with the supernatural.
But spike wrapping himself around a large cross shows just how much he thinks he deserves to be punished. He welcomes the pain for part of his penance.
Sarah's acting...her facial expression was priceless. You could see the cognitive wheels turning. The realization that he did that, and the tear drop...chef's kiss.👩‍🍳💋

The key line that Spike says in the church, in answer to Buffy's questioning why would he get his soul back, he says "To be the kind of man who would never" - never hurt her, never try to rape her. When he was human and had a soul, he wouldn't ever have thought about hurting the one he loved. In that bathroom, after she threw him off, Buffy said that act was why she would never be with him - and Spike's guilty mind connected getting his soul back, to being a better man, to giving Buffy what she deserved, and to it being what both she and God wanted. So, like everyone else said, he's not blaming Buffy... he just desperately loves her and wants to be the kind of guy that she could love back.

Very astute review and thoughts. Angel suffered for nearly 100 years with his soul. Spike has only had his soul for a few months at this time.Angel was a mess until Whistler showed him Buffy and Angel prepared to be with Slayer Buffy in Sunnydale. What I noticed on the rewatch is that Willow, Xander, Anya, and Spike are longing for a past and a non confrontational present. Buffy and Dawn are different and do not fight the changes to themselves. Dawn is where Buffy was and Buffy is assuming the role Joyce had in their lives. But the body language of Buffy is different this Season. She is still a young woman/ girl but she understands that there is no going back. Anya has returned to Vengeance. She ventured into the world, had a major setback only to retreat to what she thought was a safe space. You are right that she is not satisfied. Like so many that have a setback, she gave up and retreated. Xander is really no different than he was in High School and is still returning to his emotional basement. It’s easy to tell Anya to move on but you are the cause. Xander does not desire forgiveness but rather all to forget and move on. Think back to I Only Have Eyes For You. Buffy learned the lessons of truly hurting the one you love, the need for forgiveness, the power to grant without conditions, and the ability to seek Amends. Xander has not expressed or tries to grasp the need to make Amends. Think of the torment of Angel in Amends and what it took from Buffy to save him.Xander has not understood or attempted to embrace his destructive actions and the consequences towards Anya. Buffy went through incredible growth, trauma, and life lessons in Season 2. Buffy stumbles but she gets up and strives to be better. Even Willow is afraid to get up, Anya has retreated , Spike is a mess, and Xander has no
Self awareness . 7 years and guess what, we are where most everyone is at this stage in life with one exception… Buffy.

He never wanted a soul, but he thought to be worthy enough for her and to not be that guy who would hurt her, he needed a soul Cuz she loved Angel, so maybe she can love him.

An incredible performancxe from James Marsters in a soliloquy that is almost Shakespearean. The question is being posed is how does someone get on with life after they have done something awful? Maybe forgiveness isn't the answer, especially from the victim, but after doing something wrong, how do you live with yourself? Great writing.

I've been chewing on my tongue for some weeks until I can talk about some of the things from Seeing Red on in order to avoid spoilers.
First, I'll point out that Spike was trying to keep that he'd gotten his soul back secret. That's why he hit Anya (who was a demon, not just a woman) and it was Buffy who entered the fight against him so that's why he was fighting them.
Next, one has to understand that there are supernatural factors at work that don't apply in the real world that complicate things. Spike back then, didn't have a soul. Think back to Smashed and Gone. In Smashed, Buffy started with violence and turned it to sex. In Gone she went down on him despite his saying to get her clothes and leave, ignoring his explicit denial of consent. Both cases amounting to SA, the latter one the actual "R" word, on Buffy's part. The only reasons that most viewers forgive it on Buffy's part is 1) Buffy is not in her right mind (extreme trauma and depression) and 2) Spike, it turns out, is into it. From Spike's point of view in the bathroom, he was just doing with Buffy what she did with him. We, as the viewers, see that the situation is different. Buffy is in a completely different "headspace". Spike, however, not having a soul, doesn't recognize that, not until Buffy kicks him away. Look again at the expression on Spike's face in that moment. He's horrified as he comes to the realization of what he did.
And that's what motivates Spike to go get his soul back. Yes, he's always talking about the chip but remember, he can hurt Buffy even with the chip. If his goal is to hurt Buffy, he doesn't need to have it removed. The writer's were just being coy with that bit about the chip but there's actually an in-story reason for him to be going on about it. James Marsters has mentioned that he played Spike as being attracted to Buffy from all the way back in School Hard. That attraction grew under the surface until Drusilla picked up on it, and was why she left him (as we saw in the flashback in Fool for Love). But it was when the chip was installed, forcing Spike into close association with Buffy and the Scoobies that caused that attraction to grow. And with the growing attraction was a desire to actually change, and actual changes. Consider, when Spike thought the chip had stopped working (Smashed, again) he had to psych himself up to attempt to attempt to bite the woman, something the guy who said "I'm a veal kind of guy..." would never have needed. Okay, he's not a good person by a long shot but he'd come an enormous distance from where he started. There was his relationship with Joyce "I liked the lady" and his protectiveness of Dawn (and, incidentally, that's one thing--whatever there was between Buffy and Spike, she knew he would protect Dawn regardless, except, of course, he'd already left on his quest). But despite that, he doesn't really have a "conscience", no inherent understanding of right and wrong. Everything he has is learned by rote and by copying others and has huge, gaping holes (like recognizing how different the situation in Seeing Red was compared to Smashed and Gone). And it was that realization which sent him to get his soul back.
And that chip started it all.
And in that final scene, he's not blaming Buffy. Without a soul, he thought that getting the soul would "fix" things and he'd become what she wanted, but he thought that because he didn't have a soul. Once he had the soul and gained full human understanding, he realized that it was foolish at best. And that's why he tried to keep that he got his soul back from her. It's become another part of the torment he's experiencing.
And that's why Spike, and his character arc, is one of the most fascinating studies in the entire Buffyverse.

This ending scene has some of the best acting these two do in the series. Like with Dawn's sudden appearance in season five, there are a lot of things going on that the audience doesn't understand yet. It'll clear things up later, then a rewatch of Spike's scenes will help.
The estate Willow and Giles are at is actually Tony Head's property.
In my opinion, and what I think the show shows a bit here, is that Buffy does have PTSD from Spike trying to rape her. The sad realization is, now that he has a soul, under normal circumstances she could have let go of her excuses and let herself love him, but because of what he did before, she can't trust him or love him.
As angry as the whole rape storyline made me, I am so glad they didn't sweep it under the rug and that they both show the effect of it. I don't think Spike got his soul back only for Buffy. I think he did do it to be the man who never would rape or try to rape the woman he loved. He wanted to be a better man. Not just for her, for himself, too. I think he horrified himself, because he had changed that much from his evil days.
Dawn's wake up on fire line is my favorite line she speaks in the entire series.

I feel like Spike is very different to Angel though.... I'm well aware of how toxic Spike and Buffy's relationship was, but there's just something about him _wanting_ to get his soul back and do better as a person, that really gets me.... The demons/vampires/souls in the Buffyverse have always been a bit wishy washy (just like how all the magic is a very "soft" magic system, meaning it serves the plot and narrative, instead of having strict rules), but I truly believe that Spike's character without a soul shows that he was originally a better person than Angel (it's essentially confirmed on multiple occasions, particularly in Dopplegangland about Willow's vampire alter ego), that turning into a vampire just amplifies your innate bad behaviors and desires (like they're "id" monsters or whatever), and Spike cares when he technically DOESN'T have a soul... , it's hard to explain, but even back in season two with the Judge (I think) there's a comment about how demons/vampires don't or can't love (it might actually be season 4, but I think I s brought up in season 2), and Drusilla says something to my effect of "we do love intensely" or something, and maybe even quotes Shakespeare?

Your point about Spike trying to find his place in the world @18:12 is interesting; if you think back to his origins, I think there’s a good case that he’s /always/ been looking for his place…and (again, to your point) William is still very much the “changing himself for the object of his affection”. There’s also (and this is only now occurring to me) a certain irony in that that’s both how he wound up a vampire /and/ getting re-ensouled. Still learning that lesson, apparently.

If there is Anyone to blame for Anya making the choice she made (A second time) aside for Anya herself, it would be D'Hoffryn who had prayed on her when she was vulnerable.
