It pulls up them mountains no problem at all very happy. The 8 speed transmission makes a big difference. Im waiting on the next gen ram power wagon.

    The trailer brake controller in this vid is great. When you buy a Grand cherokee and select the tow package. It now comes with air shocks and it makes for an excellent tow vehicle. Load leveling is excellent and the 3.6 pentastar engine has proven very reliable. Tough to beat this vehicle.

    • @jimwhall6609
      @jimwhall6609 Před 2 lety

      The 3.6/ZF 8 speed isn't the most high tech package out there, but Jeep/Chrysler/Stellantis really has it dialed in to deliver great all around performance in many vehicles.

    My daughter has a 2017 GC Laredo with the 3.6 L but without the factory tow package. She had a class 4 hitch receiver and brake controller installed to pull a 2021 Springdale 1750RD with a dry weight of 3414 lbs. She also has a weight distribution hitch because the tongue weight is 520 lbs and causes the GC to squat quite a bit. The GC pulls the trailer great and with the trailer brakes provides plenty of braking power. My only concern would be ascending or descending steep or long grades without the heavy duty cooling package. I would also recommend adding a transmission cooler if you plan on towing in mountainous terrain. Even without the tow package, the GC is a great tow vehicle for trailers about 3500 lbs.

    • @StacieS225
      @StacieS225 Před 3 lety +2

      I had the same vehicle. Without the factory tow package, the towing capacity is about 3500 lbs., regardless of the hitch receiver you install. Going over the max tow capacity will eventually damage the rear axle and will do a number on the tires. I upgraded to a 2020 GC Trailhawk with the 5.7L HEMI (comes standard with the factory tow package with class IV hitch receiver) that has a max towing capacity of 7200 lbs. You should never max out the towing capacity, though.

  • @james2042
    @james2042 Před 4 lety +5

    The Dodge Durango sister to the Grand Cherokee does come with an integrated TBC as it is more designed for towing. The GC can tow heavy (even my last gen 2008 GC is rated for 7200lbs) but its not meant to be used as a daily tow vehicle. The Durango is built more for day to day towing. Also the GC does have a tow mode, or at least the last gen does because I use it regularly.

    • @JBM425
      @JBM425 Před 3 lety +1

      That may explain why there seems to be so few GCs in the used market with the tow package. Without the factory tow package, the GC is rated to pull only 3,500 pounds. Personally, I would think that the tow package should be standard on all but the lowest trim. I understand that the two package is part of the Trailhawk trim, but that trim is not aimed at people who use it as a daily commuter vehicle.

    • @james2042
      @james2042 Před 3 lety +1

      @@JBM425 the v6 grand cherokees without the tow package are rated for 3500lbs, with are rated for 6200lbs (massive cooling increase and revised suspension as well), the hemi models are rated for the 7200lbs regardless.
      The tow package is NOT part of the trailhawk, its not part of any trim, and I don't know of any vehicle that has the tow package standard for ANY trim, and that includes dually 3500 pickups

    Thanks for this very practical introduction to trailer towing. One piece of advice I would offer to 'tow-rookies' is to very closely monitor your trailer's #wheelbearings as they require MUCH more maintenance that the wheel bearings on your car/truck/SUV. Ask me how I know ;-) BTW don't forget to have the spare trailer tire with you at all times as well as a jack and lug wrench that fit the trailer . It is VERY likely that the lug nuts on the trailer are a different size than the ones on the tow vehicle.

  • @johnreese8278
    @johnreese8278 Před 2 lety +2

    If you add 4 adults, 700 lbs, you don't have any more payload for the Jeep and may be over due to the weight of the hitch itself. That would be right at its limit. You also need to consider a antisway bar. You should get the tow package which adds a transmission cooler, electronic control for sway, larger radiator etc.

    Nice video, well done production quality too. I've always towed boats too and from the lake or maybe town to town with my old Jeep Commander (4.7 and tow package) and never thought too much about it. We got a pop up recently, and I was shopping bigger trailers, and what's really killing me is that while these vehicles can have great tow capacities (something like 6 thousand I think for mine) the payload capacity is really limiting. I believe that my payload capacity is like 1100lbs. For a trailer like you have in the video I would immediately get knocked back to 700lbs with the trailer fully loaded, and then all I have left is room for me and the 3 other members of my family; no gear, no bikes, no luggage.
    To be fair, even some of the trucks I have seen don't have great payload capacity until you get into the heavier duty vehicles. I'm just a little boggled that they market vehicles with these great towing numbers, but still fairly limited payload capacity. For example, I read recently that a Honda CRV has a towing capacity of 3500lbs, but a payload capacity of 1100lbs. So, even with the lower tow numbers the amount of weight I can *really tow* isn't that far off because of the payload capacity being the limiting factor.
    I'm not sure what goes into making a bigger payload capacity, but I wish the automakers would pay more attention to it instead of just eye popping towing capacity.

    Thanks for your video. The e-pro is a little small, and I've been looking at the Kodiak 201QB, 24' long x8' wide-4100lb & 1400lb cargo, and 465 tongue weight. I would be using the tow vehicle primarily at work, and a full-size truck is too big, so I've been looking at Grand Cherokees with the 5.7 hemi and 7200lb tow rating. After watching this video, I think it should be able to tow that camper fairly well.

    Nice video. Interesting combination. Like with anything below a HD truck, it seems like vehicle payload capacity or GVWR is going to be the limiting factor if taking a family and even just bare essentials in the cab. I'd like to see you compare towing with the 4Runner as that has a surprisingly high payload, but power and transmission gearing may be more of an issue.

    My 18 grand cherokee Trailhawk pulls very well. The tow package gives you extra cooling, which also helps for offroading. The air suspension levels the vehicle. 8 speed transmission allows for very easy pulling. Overall a very comfortable tower. It pulls slightly better than my 2010 4.0 Nissan Frontier rated for 6500 lbs. The grand cherokee brakes better than the Nissan too. You can upgrade the V6's brakes to the larger brakes from the V8 GC. There are websites with details. I have not found the need.

    Thanks TK for a great and very practical review. Firstly I would not have thought of the sport mode for towing either , great solution to a problem! I was looking for videos about towing with the 3.6 Litre gasser so I was really glad to see as a canadian your test drive. My wife and I plan to go down to one vehicle in retirement and we do NOT want it to be a truck or a massive land yacht that handles like crap and barely can fit in a 20 foot garage and costs the earth. So the grand Cherokee fits all of those requirements very nicely and would handle better than a massive Suburban or Expedition. You raise a very valid point and it was my reason for seeking out this niche. As you said when you are driving this suv around empty you are saving what ? Almost 3 litres per 100km over a v8. That adds up. I want to have my cake and eat it too and I’m prepared to put up with this engine downshifting and running in the 3000-3500 range on the hills when occasionally towing to have a versatile vehicle that is rated to tow up to 6200lbs! That is amazing all while getting a combined fuel economy of 11.3 litres per 100km empty. You nailed it , who wants to drive a v8 that sucks fuel while you are running around empty? That is a significant cost. From what I’ve read these 3.6’s have been around a long time and are beefy and bulletproof with 4 bolt main bottom ends. I do get that for lots of towing the v8 shines and yes for lots of towing that is the way to go. I was sad to see the Eco Diesel was not offered in the GC for 2020 any reason why that you know of? Packaging? I don’t get it. I too am anxiously awaiting the reveal of the 2022 this year and wonder if the 3rd gen eco diesel will be in the new GC. Diesels make more sense in Canada because in the summer our diesel is 10 cents a litre cheaper than regular gas. I’ve also heard a rumour of a new 4 cylinder diesel being offered in the GC. That would rival the excellent 2.8 Litre Diesel offered in the Colorado/Canyon. HEARD ANY VALIDATION OF THIS FROM YOUR SOURCES? The grand Cherokee is a versatile package that does many things well.

    Hey guys, thanks for the informative video. I'm thinking of getting a GC next year (used, of course!) but my research conflicts with one of your comments. You said you selected "sport" mode to change the transmission settings to shift better while towing the trailer, it's my understanding that the vehicle switches to "tow" mode automatically when you connect the harness which changes the shift pattern. Unfortunately it does not have a manual button to perform this function, it runs in the background and turns on and off based on the connection. Just thinking out loud... keep up the good work and keep making those videos!

    Good video but the only reason I picked it to estch it, was glossed over too quickly. Which was to learn if the 2015 comes with a system that can tow a big trailer without having to instal electric brakes??
    As you seemed to indicate it doesn’t nc it has its own special system?? Is that right??
    If so, wouldn’t it be illegal? As I thought all over 750kg had to have electric brakes??
    So can you please advise as I’m confused.

      What you need is an aftermarket trailer brake controller that will have to be installed in the vehicle.

    If you towing an empty trailer stay home!!!!!!!!! Never use dry weight it’s not realistic. Also, you have 2 6 volt batteries, EQ hitch that’s 200 lbs. the tongue weight of that trailer is going to be over 500 lbs. doesn’t leave you much left.
    Never tow with an SUV unless it’s a utility trailer. Check the factory hitch weight capacity.
    Most are 500 max.
    Those two guys are over 400 lbs
    Cant bring the kids or any cargo.
    Flat straight road, no curves, no other traffic.
    No brake controller????
    Illegal.
    Payload 1050 lbs
    Tongue weight 500lbs
    Two guys. 500 lbs
    This is not a good set up
    If your over payload insurance and factory warranties are null in void. SUV’s are not a tow vehicle, if it was it would have a factory brake controller.
    Get a proper tow vehicle for both your and everyone else’s safety

      If you want to mess up your SUV. My old boss tried towing his race car with the Armada and blew the motor and killed the transmission. Wasn’t overweight or anywhere near max capacity, they just aren’t made for towing

      I tow a 4000 lb + travel trailer with my 2019 Pathfinder. No problems with transmission. You just have to remember whatever tow vehicle you use that you need to take it easy on acceleration from a dead stop.

      The Pathfinder also has a Tow Mode. The downside is that it has a CVT transmission, although it seems to have improved with the new model that debuted in 2017. The all-new 2022 Pathfinder trades the CVT for the also somewhat controversial ZF 9-speed tranny.

    Yo so I love jeeps and shit but I have a huge question about weight towing engine size suspension bla bla I went from a deleted f250 tt to a 2018 5.7 gr pulling a 19ft camper and if I get a larger camper will it affect towing like my current gc? Dry weight of the camper is 3500 now of course I gotta add clothes dishes towels all that bs too so, I’m squatting the ass end of the gc now and wind is a night mare, but a lovely female companion that loves numbers says we can go from a 19’ to a larger tandem axle camper and she don’t drive and understand that if the gc says 7200 max towing then we should max it out. I’m not like that at all, max towing and tongue weight completely different, so if any one with any advice would be amazing, I got a 18 gc limited 5.7 and I honestly feel she maxed out, in my guesstimation we around 5k now, so will a 6.4 with a tow package adjustable suspension be worth it? And where are the 3.0 diesel gc at? Thanks everyone help me or smack me idc I’d like opinions fact whatever

    I just bought a 217 grand Cherokee summit. It has a factory hitch on it. Do I need to add anything to it or is it ready to go? I towed my horse trailer (2,800lbs trailer plus 1,000lb horse) and every time I hit a bump, I’d hear a thump in the backend/ hitch area. I’m not towing anything near it’s limit.. should be ok, right?

    • @TruckKing
      @TruckKing  Před 3 lety

      The numbers sound right. What you hear could just be the push/pull of the trailer on the ball.
