Nurse here. Went from an employer where the expectation was we'd work 12 hours without a lunch making slightly more than I did as a TSA agent with no protections for my patients (I had 11 patients at one point...in an emergency room...) to a union job where I cap at 4 patients and probably make more than I'm worth, and have state mandated lunches.
I'll never vote R again. Not unless they become unrecognizable from the today. I'm also a military vet and R support of veterans is laughable.
What boggles my mind is Orangeman said Veterans are Losers, yet conservatives with backgrounds in the military are pro Donald. ex: Ashli Babbitt, a Veteran who ignored her training and gave her life away too easily for his cause. R.I.P. Ashli.
Retired nurse here and I agree with you 100%. Without some form of a professional union to protect nurses and their patients, the patient outcome becomes far lower. Delivering proper care of the patients requires the time and resources necessary to accomplish it. A union provides the necessary impetuous for the administration to provide for this, otherwise the nurses and patients are at the mercy of nonmedical bean--counters who could care less about patient outcome.
Republicans would say you should have taken whatever the employer gave you, no more.
I live in a state (KS), where nursing Unions have had a difficult time. 25 years ago I remember illegal union busting efforts by the hospital I worked for, but sadly, fellow nurses who told me I shouldn't support the Union because they just wanted my money.

My parents were both union members. Dad was in IBEW. Mom in ILWU. Dad got sick and was forced into early retirement at 40. By the time he started collecting Medicare, his union healthcare supplemental insurance covered $700 a month in prescription medications until the day he died. Mom was an immigrant hotel maid. As union members, they made five times the minimum wage in the 1970s. They put food on the table and sent their kids to college. Because of their diligence, their employers also thrived.

When Republicans say they want to run the government (whether fed, state or local) like a business, I remind them that government is NOT a for-profit business, but a service to the people. A business will cut expenses to make a profit, usually at the expense of employees. Better & safer working conditions, a livable wage and paid sick/vacation time, a 40-hr work week and paid overtime were only won by unions... yet most everyone now enjoys them. Those workers who are against unions are apparently ignorant of these facts. It's funny how a big CEO of a coal company was against Black Lung benefits, yet when he acquired Black Lung Disease, he very quickly applied for those very same benefits. "Only if/when it affects me." (rolls eyes)

My husband had a union job when Trump was in office. Lost it when Biden came in pushing his green new deal. Now he has a non-union job with no insurance, pension or any other benefits. We hv had to use his pension money in order to keep from losing our home & help pay basic bills. We lived comfortably on one income when Trump was in office. We live paycheck to paycheck now with 2 incomes. Our son starts college nxt fall & thanks to Biden & his America last agenda, we can no longer afford to pay for it like we had planned. We’re not the only ex-union wrkrs in this position so I say FUCK JOE BIDEN & every demoncrat politician! They hv done absolutely nothing but run this country into the ground. Back in the day when I was 18 years old. My father got me into the labor's Union here. In Arizona, I was blow away. How a lot of people didn't get into it, but a lot of my friends were dishwashing, making a $120 a week. I was in the labor union, making 4 to $500 a week. But all we can do is just wonder why many youngsters weren't hip to this LOL. I met a lot of good people, a lot of good families. And had a lot of beers. I love labor unions. All unions, electricians, concrete, welders, and all others that I missed.. but those were cool times. Everybody was able to own a house, bad ass. Cars have money in their pockets . That was making America great. AND MAKE OUR KIDS GREAT TOO ❤

I am not going to chastise this young man as I understand the concern for his family. The education system is failing us. Best teacher I had in high school was my government teacher, Ms. Ruth Gillette. She worked our butts off but we learned and understood government and why our votes were important. I think it was that they felt overlooked by the dems before. And honestly, having relatives in the south and having seen lots of those once nice little town with boarded up downtowns and no visible means of support, I totally understand how they would be skeptical when Hillary Clinton - a woman who made $1 million a pop for speeches to a room of Wall Street bankers - came along and said she understood their pain. Or completely ignored them as in the rustbelt.
But yeah… Thinking the guy who shits in golden toilets is going to be your savior is also unbelievably misguided. Donald saw those people’s fear and anger, and took advantage of it, presenting himself as their savior.
Indeed. One of the great mysteries of the universe. I know it has something to do with the constant feeding of fear of "the other" (immigrants, non-whites, LGBT+, etc.) which is used to unite the frightened into a semi-cohesive voting block. The constant fear-feeding leads then to hate and support (or at least acceptance) of stripping people's rights and voting access/democracy, etc. But the con is that the use of fear-mongering is more about DISTRACTION away from those REAL personal-economic issues about livelihood, economic security that then leads to home/family/healthcare/food/environmental security, etc.. It's the use of culture war issues and the constant fear-feeding to distract away from the real important issues that is the big problem. They've succeeded in getting people to vote with their emotions instead of their minds. Planting those seeds of fear and hate - emotions - are so much easier to fertilize and grow than fertilizing and growing thinking voters to transition from being low information and easily conned voters to basic political intelligence about what works best for their own livelihood. We need a real revival of broad popular citizen political engagement. Frank Zappa used to say that we need to treat politics as a basic bodily function. We all should eat, sleep, sh*t, and politic every day. But really both major political parties have always de-emphasized political engagement. Republicans directly cut education funding and always try to fool and con the working class into voting the opposite of their best interests. Democrats squelch, stifle, sabotage and kill popular grassroots efforts within the party (see how they sabotaged Bernie's campaigns and many other progressives that are really just FDR Democrats wanting to complete FDR's New Deal goals, running against status-quo establishment Dem incumbents) because the party leadership is corrupt and power hungry and also corporate-owned, though they do toss scraps to the people more than the Republicans. Neither political party really encourages or has invested in political education and engagement. They want enough engagement to get votes but not enough to challenge the status quo leadership. As Noam Chomsky has noted, we in the USA have the lowest form of democracy: "ratification democracy," where the voters don't really choose their leaders. Instead, the voters ratify who the status quo parties select (and financially back) for us. Which is why not much gets done, particularly with the big issues.
How? He talks like them, so they identify with him, and that's all it takes for 74M people.

Why aren't unions themselves informing their members about pro-union candidates (like President Biden) and anti-union candidates (like Trump)?

I came from a right to work state to a union state. I now have insurance for myself and my five kids and I pay $250 a month. I am making more than I ever have. I was raised to think unions were bad but they are phenomenal. Power in the collective.

My Dad was an autoworker & part of a union. I was a union member for several of my jobs & im doing pretty good considering what I have as a disabled person from my job & union, that I’ve seen other ppl struggle to get social security & go without an income until they get approved!! I’m so grateful for my union!!

Reminds me of when one of my friends said she voted for Trump because she was against Obamacare. I pointed out that she only had health coverage because of the Affordable Care Act. She couldn't afford it before that. She had no idea Obamacare and ACA were one and the same.

I've had exchanges on CZcams in which I paraphrase one of Trump's statements. One of his supporters tells me Trump never said that and I'm allowing myself to be lied to. So then I track down the exact quotation and post it by way of reply. That's the last I hear from that person. His supporters honestly don't know what the man says -- undoubtedly the right-wing media filters it for them -- and when presented with it, they just shut down. Respect to this guy for having an open mind.

Any 'regular working guy' (or person) should also be told about all Trump's contractors he refused to pay. Trump is not just anti-union, he's anti-paying contractors/employees. And yes, there is a lack of empathy among many people. We should think how policies and action impact everyone, not just ourselves.

I am a retired IAFF union firefighter and unfortunately about half of the guys that I used to work with are Trump supporters. I argued with them until I was blue in the face and they still vote Trump.
Trump could literally say "Every single union worker will make $5 less than what they make now if I become president" and they'll still vote for him.
There are a million videos of people catching MAGA voters in lies or providing evidence and video proving Trump said or did something. Doesn't matter. They'll vote the same. Pride destroys their minds.

when I was a kid- I asked my dad "why are you a democrat" and my father's answer was "I'm a union supporter" . That was 40 years ago. My father was never in a union, and I have never been in a union, but after my father's answer, I kept that in the back of my mind. And today, I am proud to say that I am a democrat because I am a union supporter, and I love Biden's support of the backbone of our nation- the union worker!
