Aruba S2500 Firmware upgrade and Noctua Fan install

- Installing updated firmware, disabling the "stacking" interfaces to free up 2x 10gb SFP+ ports, and installing quieter fans.

With Noctua (Noctua NF-A4x20 PWM) fans in the Aruba S2500-48p POE switch, things get pretty quiet, though time will tell if it runs cool enough. Final temperature results net ~71C cpu temp, and as high as ~76C for DPE-0, whatever that is. The good news? It is nearly silent.

well took like an hour but finally got the darn firmware. now to save it and have it ready for when the switch arrives.
I really liked the video. It really encapsulates troubleshooting. When you try to fix an issue and the lingering the can of worms its hiding.
I notice every one changes the fans out. but with stock its not very loud at all. It seems to only be loud when it boots up.
I finally got my stuff all up and going. had to update mine though the USB port. and so fare very happy with my switch. now to get one more. LOL.
now if I could find a copy of the darn firmware. with out having a silly company email address.
I think DPE-0 is the data plane (ASIC) temperature.
I have the 24p version of this switch. I have new things to learn since I'm so used to the web GUI that netgear has. I wanted to replace my 10/100 poe switch's with 100/1000 poe with 10 gig ports. and this switch was 400 bucks cheaper on the used market. so I hope I can learn the commands for lags ect using the CLI

Can the SFP+ port be used to connect a server or PC with 10G connection, fiber or copper using appropriate SFP? Or are they just for uplink to another switch.
Yes they can! I have my PC connected with a 10gb fiber connection.
How have the noctua fans been long term? Have they been coolibg the switch properly/enough? Any idea if theres one that would fit better kr should i just go with that model and drill out the holes?
They were fine, mostly quiet, but this switch runs really hot. The fans kick up in volume every once in a while in the summer. But ...I just turned it off and I'm using the new Mikrotik for now.

I might be a bit late to ask this, but how has SFP compatability been for you with this switch? I've read online that there isn't a command to allow third party SFPs and that it's picky about DACs.
Yeah it's definitely a little picky with SFP modules. I googled the list of compatible modules and then just searched eBay to find ones that went for cheap. The 10 gig SR SFP+ modules I foud on ebay were and still are reasonably priced on ebay. (Under $10 each)

Thinking about picking up one of these 2500-24Ps, how did the noctua fans perform with cooling overtime?
The fans kick up in RPM every once in a while, but generally if I have my AC running it's kind of hard to tell! I would say I wouldn't mind if it were to run them at a higher RPM because putting a hand on top it gets pretty warm. that said the only way to really go about doing that is to hack a hole in the top and install a larger fan, and dueo to space constraints inside, it would probably stick out the top. A simpler solution would be a smaller, lower power 10 gig switch.

I couldn't get the latest firmware because Aruba didn't like my gmail address. Since I don't have a so called corperate email, I'm stuck with what ever firmware is on my switch when it is delivered.
yeah, you would need to set up a custom domain and email. it's not expensive it's just a bit of a pain. The firmware isn't even that new (2019) so unless you've got a specific feature or bug you're trying to fix you may actually be fine.
@@jarenhavell Thats good to know. I was just trying to get past the browser compatibility mode issue. Hell it might not even have that issue when it gets here

I think they have found a way to do this even more dificult, I'm surrently trying to update my firmware and now its not available anywhere I can find, would you happen to still have the firmware file?

What are stack ports even for?
when you have more than one switch in the same rack and you want them to basically be one giant switch.
@@jarenhavell Now I see where the term comes ck. It makes sense now. Turning thoses back to switched ports will be amoung the first things I do.
