- The 2012 LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collectors Series R2-D2 has some series competition! The 75308 R2-D2 from 2021 presents a surprisingly large upgrade to the 9 year old model while retaining a $200 retail price! Each set has an R2-D2 Minifigure, Display Card, & multiple shared functions. However each set is still unique which makes for an interesting LEGO Star Wars set comparison for R2-D2 here! How much better can they get?

I’m sure someone else said this, but that part on r2’s “leg panel” constantly flipped throughout the original trilogy, so it makes sense that the older one had the buttons in the back. If you look up pictures of R2 and c3po on tattooine, or even some of R2 on dagobah, you’ll see the buttons on the back
Yeah, even in the movies it wasn't perfectly consistent so can't fault the Lego set design for inaccuracy on that count.

What should matter is how accurate it is to the real thing. R2D2 is round. Head and body. 2021 wins.

A little late to the party, but regarding the buttons on the legs, I did some digging since there are pictures in the instruction booklet showing them both on the front and the back. I found an in-deep look at the details (first result by googling "R2D2 leg buttons" and reading the first result). Turns out that it varies from movie to movie:
- In ANH there are scenes where the buttons are on both positions, but most of them show the buttons on the front.
- ESB and ROTJ show them at the back in all scenes.
- The Prequels show them at the back in all scenes.
- The Sequels show them at the front in all scenes.
Now, it's most likely that the 2012 set was modeled after the prequels (since the Clone Wars 3D model didn't have any buttons), and the 2021 was modeled after the sequels. This would explain the difference in the orientation of the buttons.
Myself just building legos with my son is fun, but this dudes passion, and knowledge is definitely worth a sub, and looking forward to seeing the titanic build
Completely random: My local lego store was playing duel on mustafar music, I was quoting the entire scene in my head and wanted to scream “I HATE YOU!!!!”
With how they smoothed out the body you wonder why they left the studs along the posterior spine and at the “shoulders” with the gray 2x2 exposed studs.
Overall, the odd aesthetic experiment would be the 2012 head on the 2021 body.
I did noticed what you mentioned in minute 10:49 regarding the legs two dots located different in both sets. If you go to info page 9 from the manual you will find a photo of 4 R2 props, two of them with the dots in front and the other two with them in the back. I guess they were not paying that much of attention when assembling the astromechs. BTW, greetings from Panamá 🇵🇦
I never even knew there was a 1999, but after seeing it I love it!
It has a certain charm, and if you find the instructions it seems like it would be easy to part out; it has no pieces unique to the model.

I,d argue for the parts selection in 99 that its actually pretty damn good, If you want a challenge though build one yourself using only parts available at the time and similar piece counts to the new ones. would make an interesting video / series. could even do other retro versions of newer UCS sets or modernised versions of retro ones.

The 2012 lego r2d2 is my all time favorite lego set and I got it about 3-4 years ago, and now I’m hit with a “new and better” one! I’m so conflicted, how would you feel if the made a newer version of the UCS Imperial Shuttle with newer pieces and better design? Love the content nonetheless!!
But I missed out on the UCS Imperial Shuttle, so I’d love it if they brought back a new & improved version.

I have that one, and it's not bad for its scale I have to admit.
I got the 2021 model recently. I thought it was super tedious to build compared to the lego helmet sets, but it definetly ended up being more rewarding.

Took me a couple days to get the 2021 version, they instantly keep selling out. Some ppl who have the first one are getting it just for that 50th plaque lol. Trying to decide if I just to pack it storage or build it and get another one haha.

The 2012 model looks better overall even with the studs on the dome. The 2012 mini figure is painted like the original toy so I like it more.

I'm having troubles with the middle leg on the 2021 R2-D2
I'm curious if you'll compare the 75308 with the Droid Commander. It seems the droid set didn't sell why which baffles me. To me, a moving, programmable R2-D2 is so much cooler than one just for display.
I believe the back of the 2012 R2-D2 box is set on Geonosian because it look similar to other sets in that time period
I like the 2021 set for how curved it is but 2012 is still really cool
One thing I really want to see from LEGO is an updated Ewok Village set but for them to also include ghost Obi wan, Yoda, and anakin. We’ve seen them do transparent arms for NINJAGO and stuff and we’ve seen transparent heads with printing on ultron and hidden side minifigs. So why couldn’t they make transparent minifigs. We’ve never seen the ghost figures. The only time we saw them in LEGO form was LEGO Star Wars TCS

Really glad they remade R2 so I didn’t have to pay double for the 2012 model. Here’s hoping going forward we get 2 new UCS sets every year and now 1 remake each year of an older UCS set that new collectors missed out on.

I disagree with your view on piece count. Sure there are weight differentials but no matter what, the more pieces means more maneuvers for the builder to enjoy. Especially since more pieces being less in weight than less pieces means they are smaller and more intricate in detail rather than big heavy chunky pieces that have no definition.

Fun fact: the only character that appeared in all nine "main line" (those that had an episode number) Star Wars movies, was R2-D2. So they're a fitting representative of the franchise as a whole, I'd say.

One thing better about the 1999 version is the inclusion of chrome elements.

I think it would've been better if you compared the piece count with price instead of weight. For example, how much does a set cost with a piece count of about 200.

Almost all Lego pieces are hollow. Really has to do with them achieving detail using more, but smaller, pieces.
