I love the fact Hyce is bringing back an ancient tradition that goes back to the days of british steam railroading. This was a known tradition on british railways for crews to cook their food using the firebox while waiting for passengers to load at stations. I don't know if this became a thing in the US, but knowing railroad history it probably did happen.

I believe there was a bakery in South America / Brazil that had an old deprecated steam engine that they used as a baking oven at some point.
At the height of the steam era, old engines with their boilers and fireboxes could see a different use case than powering something down the rail line.

Maybe just a little oil (cooking oil, not engine oil) on the skillet (shovel) to prevent sticking, grill the onions first until they are translucent and golden brown, remove onions to the bucket. place beef patty on the skillet season with salt, flip patty after 4 minutes and add buttered buns face down. When the patty is done the buns will be ready. Assemble bun, patty, onions and top bun. I wonder how many RGS crew members heated their lunch on the RGS 20, I am sure they heated their coffee, which should be your next experiment (cooking lesson)

    Wonderful!
    Two things...
If any of you have see the Disney movie about the great locomotive chase, when the locomotive playing the Texas is first shown, there is a shot in the cab where bacon is hanging on the firebox door and a pot of coffee is on the "mantle" just above it. 😁
Secondly, there is an old clip of some Englishmen drivers having a morning "fry-up" on the shovel of their quaint little locomotive. I believe the shovel they used looked a lot like a well-seasoned Wagner skillet and nothing stuck to it! You can tell they must have done this often to actually get the shovel "seasoned." I figure they must just use that shovel for that purpose only 😉, as coal would probably scrape the seasoning off fairly quickly.
Guess seasoning a shovel and writing a cookbook will be on the agenda with my friends Avery this fall.

  • @buckduane1991
    @buckduane1991 Před rokem

Probably silly to say, but you might want to season your shovel like you would a cast iron skillet, Hyce. Many train crews actually did that 130 years ago. I also remembered some years ago a friend sent me a cook book from the Nevada Northern Railway that had some of the recipes the engine and caboose crews would use back in 1910 utilizing the caboose coal stove or the locomotive firebox or boiler sheet to cook. “Iron Horse Cookery”, I think? It’s a very interesting look at railroading history that is often overlooked.
Back then, some railroads had “Bean Houses” at remote spots on the lines between towns or destinations where the crew could slow down and have a plate of beans or whatever was being cooked handed up to them as they rolled through or stop for a few minutes. They’d say “we’re heading to beans” when hungry and speeding a bit to get there quicker . Over time, this became the saying “Give it the Beans!” to mean (in lack of better terms and go for a ludicrous example) “Kenosha Speed, Go! See you later, Dark Helmet!”… in other words, to indicate a crew that had places to be and things to do intentionally speeding to try and reach a destination, this being the few bean houses run by the railroads that had them pretty much all disappeared by the 1920s and by the 1950s most crews were bringing a lunch packed by their wife to eat. Though the bean houses were gone, the term “beans” and “going somewhere quick” remained. However, since not all railroads or geographical locations had them, the terms “Highball” or “Haul the Mail” became dominant in time. It’s funny to hear you say this in Derail Valley and Railroads Online, Hyce, because the original origin of “Give it the beans” really is from the railroad over 120 years ago. 😂

I found it cool though to note that as you pull the scoop out of the firebox and the burger was continuing to steam/smoke/give off visible gas, you could see it getting drawn in through the firebox door. I guess if I'd thought about it I knew that with the door open she'd suck in through the hole, rather than blow firebox smoke out, but it was cool to see a visual demonstration of that.

Recently you were talking about how the train companies were trying to save money (on video "making money without derailing for Once") and they were use smart start program or something to restart the engines if air pressure or battery charge dropped, I thought it was interesting the didn't use a compressed air and air pressure to start on a separate system.
I've heard trucks using compressed air to start, so the technology is there...

I suppose since you cooked it on a steam locomotive, it makes it a steamed ham? Although its probably a little different from the ones you'll find in Albany though ;-)

If you were an even in the museum with the locomotives, and as a part of it, you would sell burgers that were maid in the locomotive, and like show people how you do it.
No joke I would pay top dollar to both see it and eat it.

I wonder if any engineers would heat their food or drinks using the locomotive while they were chugging along. I'd imagine you could at least warm up some coffee on the oil shelf.

You should steam broccoli with this thing. Just throw in the cylinder valve, it'll be fine.

    Okay, next suggestion:
Smoked, bacon wrapped jalapenos stuffed with cheese. I used a grill to smoke mine but if you have another type of smoker I suggest using that. Hint hint, wink wink.
