I agree with whoever it was that named Dimash, Morissette, and Sohyang as the "trifecta of amazing singers from around the world". There are others, but those three, I think, are the most impressive. My personal favourite is Sohyang because it feels like she's singing directly to me, which is something a lot of her fans also feel. She's an empath, or something... But from a technical standpoint, they're all incredible. Dimash 6+ octaves, smh... The violin player is Sue Son. She was once on Britain's Got Talent, 10 years ago or something like that.
The difference is that I can listen to So Hyang many times and still discover essence of her voice more and more , and I never get tired of it while the others are not. The only other singer who did that to me was Edith Piaf over 50 years ago.

The song is really familiar to us Koreans to the point that Arirang feels like a second national anthem. When we sing the song, we feel many emotions, mixed with sadness over what we went through, togetherness, etc. But, added to this, she did put the feeling of hope and comfort into the song with her own arrangement, and I think that makes this performance so special and precious. She also sang a different version of Arirang, 'A Song of Overcoming, Arirang'. This song also represent hope and positivity, rather than frustration and depression. Sohyang's rendition injected elements that incorporated the tumult and chaos from Korean's history of wars and foreign occupation, as well as the longing for peace and reunification to make this song an epic saga here. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. what a wonderful review of her life. If I might add, people do not realize that almost all her performances are live ( some outdoors with poor speakers ) because she is not recording artist and it still sounds great if not better than recording. As a person, she had been living with her in-laws for over 20 years in the same house caring for them as if her own blood. If you know Korean culture and family structure, you know that is literally impossible to do. Just ask any Korean lady who is married if they want to live with in-laws in the same house. That alone tells me what type person she is. She is simply remarkable.

I first heard the song Arirang in 2015. I found it odd cause as a child I would hear that exact song in my dreams and it haunted me until 2015 when I found out it was a real song. I cry every single time I hear it and it makes me feel so homesick I want to pound my chest and sob. Not sure why. I am 56 years old and just cried through your entire review. So Hyang has a pitch perfect voice and if you don't feel anything when she sings you must be dead. I was so happy to hear her sing Arirang and I consider it the best out there.

This 'traaditional' performance is the exception rather than the rule,its just that it happened to be the theme of that weeks show. She has released new performances from during the pandemic from a project called 'begin again korea' which will be self explanatory when you watch but please check them out starting with 'i will always love you' (all live performances outdoors). Arirang is a traditional folk song about the hope that one day the people of the north & south of the country will live together as one again. The original is a very simple folk song that is a million miles away from what you've just heard but was turned in to this more 'anthemic' version by sohyangs amazing talent at arrangements (she does the arrangement s to all songs she performs). Please read her back story which amongst other things like her poor health & her faith,it goes a long way to explaining why she is not a massive worldwide superstar even though she clearly has the talent. So Hyang is well known for her flawless vocal techniques but she is actually a brilliant artist who can convey the proper emotions which she thinks most important in singing. Every vocal techniques/skills of hers are used perfectly/wisely to deliver the exact lyrics/vibes/feelings with outstanding/genius interpretation not just to show off abilities and that makes her not only a great vocalist but also a true virtuoso. Moreover, she makes her own arrangements for the songs, the Chorus, and the Orchestra. Wonderful and beautiful lady both in and out. Fun fact: She is a composer/song writer and professor - she teaches contemporary/applied music and she is also a writer/novelist - she has published several essays/fantasy novels. Her real dream is making a Hollywood blockbuster movie with her own fantasy novels.

Not to offend but just for your information: Actually H is not silent, a little bit light~ airy pronunciation. (It is very nasty to enunciate, so they ignore the H sound and regard as a silent H) The original song(composed early 90s) was a folk song with sampling of some part of old traditional melodies(handed down orally - like you said it's kinda unofficial/second Korean National Anthem) The original song means a lot to Koreans but I felt the melody of folk song was quite boring/too simple. However, So Hyang(and her crew) twisted it( in good way) and rearranged it modernly/with opera vibe addiing climax , same name but totally different song. And now many people don't remember the original folk song, the title Arirang alone just reminds me of her insane/signature Bb5 and her angelic/pure voice, sorry to the original singer(he is a famous folk song singer in Korea, though), but the original song is erased in my mind. I think we can call this an innovation.

As Arirang is considered an "unofficial national anthem" of Korea, its essence captures the history of hardships and pain Korea and its people have suffered in their past, but also threads through it a glimmering theme of hope, resilience, and togetherness. When she sings about the lonely island in the East sea and the rough winds whipping the island and asks, "Dokdo, did you hang in there alright last night", the song is referring to an island off the coast of South Korea which was stolen from the nation amongst many other things during the brutal frame when the Japanese attacked, abused, and occupied the nation for several years. But they often conveniently omit this part of their history from their education system and still try to claim the island as theirs, so the song sweetly "checks on" Dokdo to see if it's doing alright.

I have gone on to become her fan for more than one reason. She is a Korean singer with incredible range and, to me, an unparalleled head voice. Even more importantly, she commits her emotion in every single one of her performance as you already sampled in this epic performance. This is very emotional song for Koreans because this song is about North and South Korea become together as one nation. We still have so many seperated families who have been hoping to see each other before they die. Everytime I listen this song, I cry. 😭
The original is much simpler and So Hyang made this version for the show. She arranged the orchestra, the background singers to create this masterclass version. Every song you react to will follow suit. She captured you from the first note to the last and it was well expressed on your faces. Great reaction. This is a very subdued song for So Hang and you're in for a great and exciting ride.

Outside of professional opera I have never seen a singer close to her. The thing about her is she sings every genre with the same amazing skill and voice level, and is a master arranger of music. Old songs just sound new.

The original song which was a very mellow folk song released in 1990 does not sound anything like this. Sohyang pretty much made it a completely different song, different genre. It's one of kind.
So late on this, but my "holy trinity" are Dimash, So Hyang, and Angelina Jordan. Morisette is AMAZING in her own right, but for me, she is juuuuuust a SLIGHTTTTT step lower, but still one of the best, so that's in no way a sleight to her.

This is a traditional folk song that most recently has been used to represent the dream of unification of the Koreas and this arrangement was composed by So Hyang and her husband to take advantage of her ridiculous range and breath control. I agree with whoever it was that named Dimash, Morissette, and Sohyang as the "trifecta of amazing singers from around the world". There are others, but those three, I think, are the most impressive. My personal favourite is Sohyang because it feels like she's singing directly to me, which is something a lot of her fans also feel. She's an empath, or something... But from a technical standpoint, they're all incredible. Dimash 6+ octaves, smh...
The violin player is Sue Son. She was once on Britain's Got Talent, 10 years ago or something like that.
The difference is that I can listen to So Hyang many times and still discover essence of her voice more and more , and I never get tired of it while the others are not. The only other singer who did that to me was Edith Piaf over 50 years ago.

Wow your first pronunciation of 'Arirang' was perfect~:) Arirang is a kind of Korean folk song. The song is really familiar to us Koreans to the point that Arirang feels like a second national anthem. When we sing the song, we feel many emotions, mixed with sadness over what we went through, togetherness, etc.
But, added to this, she did put the feeling of hope and comfort into the song with her own arrangement, and I think that makes this performance so special and precious. She also sang a different version of Arirang, 'A Song of Overcoming, Arirang'. This song also represent hope and positivity, rather than frustration and depression. Glad you folks got acquainted with Sohyang. When discussing the best vocalists in the world, it would be incomplete without her. Arirang Alone is originally a Korean folk song. Sohyang's rendition injected elements that incorporated the tumult and chaos from Korean's history of wars and foreign occupation, as well as the longing for peace and reunification to make this song an epic saga here. The musical composition is almost cinematic that you can visualize the story unfold in front of your eyes. Very much in agreement with your comment about this akin to a Broadway musical.

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she's from another planet or perhaps an angel come down from Heaven. We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. She does all the musical arrangements herself, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and
Vietnamese.

She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of "You Raise Me Up" before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV. czcams.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/video.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 42 on April 5, though in Korean culture she would be 43 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 35 when she sang this version of "Arirang Alone."
She decided to enter a televised singing contest called "King of the Masked Singers" in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on CZcams. Apparently Oprah Winfrey saw her on CZcams and showed her to David Foster, who then contacted her and went to Japan in order to work together. She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 "There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death." So she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

what a wonderful review of her life. If I might add, people do not realize that almost all her performances are live ( some outdoors with poor speakers ) because she is not recording artist and it still sounds great if not better than recording. As a person, she had been living with her in-laws for over 20 years in the same house caring for them as if her own blood. If you know Korean culture and family structure, you know that is literally impossible to do. Just ask any Korean lady who is married if they want to live with in-laws in the same house. That alone tells me what type person she is. She is simply remarkable.

I first heard the song Arirang in 2015. I found it odd cause as a child I would hear that exact song in my dreams and it haunted me until 2015 when I found out it was a real song. I cry every single time I hear it and it makes me feel so homesick I want to pound my chest and sob. Not sure why. I am 56 years old and just cried through your entire review. So Hyang has a pitch perfect voice and if you don't feel anything when she sings you must be dead. I was so happy to hear her sing Arirang and I consider it the best out there.

This 'traaditional' performance is the exception rather than the rule,its just that it happened to be the theme of that weeks show. She has released new performances from during the pandemic from a project called 'begin again korea' which will be self explanatory when you watch but please check them out starting with 'i will always love you' (all live performances outdoors). Arirang is a traditional folk song about the hope that one day the people of the north & south of the country will live together as one again. The original is a very simple folk song that is a million miles away from what you've just heard but was turned in to this more 'anthemic' version by sohyangs amazing talent at arrangements (she does the arrangement s to all songs she performs). Please read her back story which amongst other things like her poor health & her faith,it goes a long way to explaining why she is not a massive worldwide superstar even though she clearly has the talent. Finally,this lady is not restricted in the slightest by genre,she can sing anything & sing it well because the instrument that is her voice is so technically good that it can go anywhere musically,add to that sohyangs ability to portray emotion & tell a story through a song,even when not in a language you understand,is I believe the 8th wonder of the world. Having just seen that performance of arirang, it will probably be hard for you to believe that on the 'begin again korea' series she even be seen rapping! So Hyang is well known for her flawless vocal techniques but she is actually a brilliant artist who can convey the proper emotions which she thinks most important in singing. Every vocal techniques/skills of hers are used perfectly/wisely to deliver the exact lyrics/vibes/feelings with outstanding/genius interpretation not just to show off abilities and that makes her not only a great vocalist but also a true virtuoso. Moreover, she makes her own arrangements for the songs, the Chorus, and the Orchestra. Wonderful and beautiful lady both in and out.
Fun fact: She is a composer/song writer and professor - she teaches contemporary/applied music and she is also a writer/novelist - she has published several essays/fantasy novels. Her real dream is making a Hollywood blockbuster movie with her own fantasy novels.

The original song(composed early 90s) was a folk song with sampling of some part of old traditional melodies(handed down orally - like you said it's kinda unofficial/second Korean National Anthem) The original song means a lot to Koreans but I felt the melody of folk song was quite boring/too simple. However, So Hyang(and her crew) twisted it( in good way) and rearranged it modernly/with opera vibe addiing climax , same name but totally different song. And now many people don't remember the original folk song, the title Arirang alone just reminds me of her insane/signature Bb5 and her angelic/pure voice, sorry to the original singer(he is a famous folk song singer in Korea, though), but the original song is erased in my mind. I think we can call this an innovation.

When she sings about the lonely island in the East sea and the rough winds whipping the island and asks, "Dokdo, did you hang in there alright last night", the song is referring to an island off the coast of South Korea which was stolen from the nation amongst many other things during the brutal frame when the Japanese attacked, abused, and occupied the nation for several years. But they often conveniently omit this part of their history from their education system and still try to claim the island as theirs, so the song sweetly "checks on" Dokdo to see if it's doing alright.

Outside of professional opera I have never seen a singer close to her. The thing about her is she sings every genre with the same amazing skill and voice level, and is a master arranger of music. Old songs just sound new.

Trifecta guy here. The song is a 600-year-old folk song that is actually loved so much it's a second National Anthem for them. The band is not there to play a song for a singer. So Hyang specifically arranges every part of the kind of band she wants, yes, she is that good. Sorry, don't know who the violinist is. There was a person who made the comment, he knew an important person from Trans-Siberian Express who could put her to work. I don't like that they basically do Christmas music, so I would put her in something year around. I bet she is 40 years old, or she's close to that and still stunning!! Another Korean single is one of their famous and best KPOP stars, named "AILEE" she does the best cover of "I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU"!! Then there is another Korean by the name of "J. FLA" she does the best cover of "BILLIE JEAN"!! 40 million hits told me to check it out!! W O W no wonder!! I'm sure you've tried some of her other songs by now, like "EVERYONE" I Have Nothing. She sang You Raised Me Up while having Pneumonia!!

I love how honest this reaction is. Too many reactors are so aware of the fact that they're on camera and that people are watching them. They are so extra. The original song which was a very mellow folk song released in 1990 does not sound anything like this. Sohyang pretty much made it a completely different song, different genre. It's one of kind.
So late on this, but my "holy trinity" are Dimash, So Hyang, and Angelina Jordan. Morisette is AMAZING in her own right, but for me, she is juuuuuust a SLIGHTTTTT step lower, but still one of the best, so that's in no way a sleight to her.

To me, personally, So Hyang is like the "female" version of Dimash. Her vocals are so versatile and she can toy with our emotions easily within this one song only. Thanks for the reaction guys. Cheers!! 😊
