  • Welcome!
This react is to Korean vocalist Sohyang singing Arirang Alone on the KBS show Immortal Songs 2. I was able to be a little more verbally informative in this one with regards to her vocal techniques and artistic decision-making however that really doesn't stop my avid appreciation for her voice from coming through.
If you enjoyed this video I'd greatly appreciate if you give it a like, and if you're new here, subscribe and hit the bell!

*Arirang* is the most-beloved Korean folk song. It’s believed to be first sang over 600 years ago, and passed down from generation to generation. No one knows the exact meaning of Arirang but it embodies the spirit of the people of Korea for centuries. Arirang represents the suffering and tribulation (Arirang 'Hill') overcome as people and the nation. If we’re together as one holding hands, we can make it over the hill.
*Arirang Alone* is a modern adaptation (released in 1990) of the original song written in the hope of reunification of Koreas. It’s a song of hope and peace. It tells a fantasy of the Island of Dokdo floating in the East Sea all alone singing Arirang. If Dokdo sang Arirang, alone in the Eat Sea, would North and South reunite?
Dokdo is islets centrally located between Mount Baekdu (in northern border of North Korea) and Mount Halla (in Jeju Island, South Korea). Let’s ride a boat together from Baekdu and Halla. When we dock our boats at Dokdo, we’ll witness a new dawn together.
The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”.
Where everyone in the audience sings along is where Sohyang incorporated the original Arirang lyric and melody.

FINALLY someone who actually pointed out that transition from pure head to mixed/belt (7:27). Everyone focuses on the amazing Bb5 but NO ONE talks about this. Those 2 seconds are SO DIFFICULT. She went up one octave from chest to head and then on three different syllables she changed her tone three times from head to mix in just 2 seconds. 99% of singers would have cracked every single syllable. First time i saw this video my reaction was just the same. For me it is still the most amazing bit of this performance. I mean, apart from the otherworldly experience of that Bb.

"Why am I cryting?" Sure can relate, especially for a traditional Korean folk song! Sohyang offers this fantastic example how music can transcend language barrier. The drama and the emotion can be so readily sensed through her magical voice in this amazingly arranged song. Love your approach of using written notes throughout the video to minimize prolonged interruption and also serve to highlight the breaks where you want to make important notes. Your reaction is filled with chuckful of vocal pedagogy, which often come across dry and alienating to me, a music consumer without much professional training. However, the passion and enthusiasm you put forward about the performance makes you so approachable and likable.

In Korea, 70% of the country is mountainous. So it was common to cross the mountain from the old rural village to the other village. Most of these mountain paths that appear outside the village are very high and curved. This road was called Arirang Pass. And, Korean traditional music called "Arirang" expresses this place as the last scene of seeing loved ones leave behind.
Sohyang's song, "Holo Arirang," was composed by a Korean folk song composer to wish people living separately in North and South Korea could meet in one place. in the middle of a song
" Dokdo. Did you sleep well last night? "
There's a lyric like this. Although it is a personified expression of the Korean language's cherished object, many Koreans become emotional with the phrase.
The composer thought it was a place where the separated people could meet.

Julia next one you need to react to is Lean On Me with MIchael Bolton in the audience . One of the few performances she does that is more mind blowing attention getting singing than singing from a pure emotional standpoint. And that's not a bad thing, just a little out of the ordinary. Nice work as always.

Just thought i would put here that I really love your editing. A lot of vocal coaches react to these songs/artists and, with all due respect, their analysis is often just as good as yours but your editing really makes your videos shine in my opinion.

As a Korean (Who can understand the language and know this song well)
If you felt this song is cute and pure but also make you cry
That means this song is delivered correctly.
The song is telling about everything that this CZcamsr reacted
Even if she can't understand korean and history of the song.
I'm so glad I watched this video because It makes me feels like So-hyang has delivered the song perfectly.

It's because of her and three other South Korean singers like Park Ki Young, ALi, Son Seung Yeon that i have learned the South Korean language.

Her vocals are beyond amazing but her talents are swelled by the fact that she is responsible for the mesmerising arrangements of all the songs she performs, giving us a real insight in to her musicality as a whole. If you listened to the original of this song you could be forgiven for hardly recognising it as it is just a traditional folk song,a bit 'ploddy',as folk songs sometimes are, but a sprinkle of the old so hyang magic it has become more 'anthem' like. There are a couple more 'english/american' songs for you to look at that are 'classics' that almost everyone would know that have had the so hyang treatment, which are 'bridge over troubled water' & 'lean on me' (before the song starts, never in a million years will you be able to guess the direction in which that goes!!!) both from the show 'immortal songs 2' & then there is her performance of 'i have nothing' at the DMC FESTIVAL, which tbh doesn't change too much from the original in the first half of the song, apart from the key she sings it in, but the second half of the song however,in particular the climax,is a different story altogether.al these songs I suggest for the same reason, which is that I am sure you are familiar with the originals so you can compare(not the best choice of word as everyone is individual so you probably shouldn't compare but maybe what i'm trying to say is that you have something to 'relate' so hyang's version to). Once you have got through these I suggest that you take a look at her 8 performances on the show 'king of masked singer' which she won,and remained queen, for 7 consecutive weeks, which is a record for the show. These songs are the opposite in that they are all korean songs which I am sure you wont be familiar with, but this is where,in my opinion, her talent shines the most,I think these performances show off her vocals( & her skill at arranging too) much more than the performances you have seen so far. It is also here where you can see her versatility to the max because you get the ballads etc but you get the pop,the rock & believe it or not you also get the rap(day day). The korean version of this show is not as 'extravagant'(or scary) when it comes to the 'masks' as the UK/US version & so hyang's mask is very 'human' like, I think her character is called 'old lady' actually, which is not so distracting, and anyway, once she starts singing there is no doubt that it is her. I know that is a lot of performances & I realise there are only 24 hrs in a day & that there are other artists you want to react to but please,be kind to yourself & even if you dont do a reaction video for us,please please please just listen to them for your own personal enjoyment.
As I said, these songs are predominately in korean but if you do want the eng subs then I suggest you watch them on vimeo. Great rea tion by the way,I really enjoy watching people watching so hyang, particularly people like yourself who are professionals,in different capacities, when it comes to singing/music etc as it helps us people that only know it sounds good to understand what she is doing that makes it sound good, apart from the fact that she has a god given talent. Hoping for another reaction video soon. Thankyou Julia

I know you have loads of recommended lists done by Sohyang, yes, all of them are representation of our inner most part done, stunning.
I also want you to have chance to listen to relatively recent songs by her.
One of them is 'I will always love you', which is, I think, already surpassing Whitney's, sorry to say. So emotionally perfect one sung in imperfect surroundings.
Julia, Thanks a lot for your pure beauty as well.
