      Three of my favorites from Angelina, your pick:
      - Born to die (Lana Del Rey). Deep and resonant. Almost bizarre mismatch between a very young face (age 12?) and the adult-sounding voice and lyrics. czcams.com/video/DNU-HcLuO_I/video.html
      - A million years ago (Adele). Soft, expressive, emotional. czcams.com/video/QHLtZQ3sIwE/video.html
      - Nothing breaks like a heart (Miley Cyrus). Faster pop/country, a style I haven't seen from her earlier. Apparently she got the backing track from Mark Ronson, co-writer of the song. Age 13. czcams.com/video/fJ9eu7qBiwQ/video.html
      Thanks for the reactions so far.

      Actually, I've seen some evidence that offers a lot of support for what you are saying. The reactor who goes by the name Truedarkseed is deep into R&B from hearing it in his house when he was growing up. He reviewed this same video. I don't know if I've seen a reactor so blown away by a performance. But, he doesn't stop there. He immediately releases a follow up video that's just commentary on this same performance by Angelina. Highly recommend checking these two videos out.

    A couple unrelated comments: I don’t see these vocals as Angelina’s “style”, but merely one of the genres that she can recreate-seemingly effortlessly as you noted. If you watch her recent Adele cover of Easy on Me, you’ll see an amazing array of vocal textures and tones completely different from this. Also, I agree that Angelina’s version here is not a personal statement, but her tribute to an older, 1960’s style of soul-and to Etta James herself. I think Angelina intentionally takes this over the top, and that makes it fun as well as an amazing display of vocals. And finally, I am always amazed at how incredible she sounds with no technical help-just give her a music track, a mic, and a big sofa.

    • @AndreaSilvestro
      @AndreaSilvestro  Před 2 lety +7

      ah yes! i agree and def did not mean to say that that is her only style, just seems like a technique and texture that she uses a lot.

      Angelina can certainly be a chameleon with her voice. But Amy Winehouse is clearly a major Influence on her vocals, and not just because Angelina has said she is. There are many songs, both Amy’s and others’, where she literally channels Amy Winehouse’s style. That doesn’t make her less of a unique or individual artist. In fact, it’s the nature of music and the nature of art in general to be influenced by those around you and who came before you. As

    Whenever Angelina sings a song it always seems like she has somehow figured out the way it was always _supposed_ to sound. It's baffling to me how a 12 year old can just 'unlock' a song that has been around for over 50 years. ...and yet there it is. I'm not sure it could be done in any other way that would suit the song better than she has done it here.

    • @robertvirnig638
      @robertvirnig638 Před 2 lety +9

      As much as it amazes me when Angelina totally reimagines a song such as "Bohemian Rhapsody," or "Billy Jean," I am more impressed when she knows not to mess with a song much and just makes minor adjustments making you think that the original artist should have done that. An example is "Yesterday" which she didn't alter much at all except slow it down, but that was exactly what the song needed as now whenever I hear the original it seems rushed. She doesn't seem to change Adele's songs much and on first listen it might sound like she is just imitating Adele since their voices have much of the same qualities, but upon closer listening, there are many minor adjustments that show Angelina gives thought to every phrase she sings.

      @@starkenterprises2371 No need to insult a 12 year old. Especially one that is brave enough in her art that she is able to do what we heard here. This is an artist pushing at the envelope, coloring outside the lines to create something new and bold. ...but it's ok, not everyone gets it. There are plenty of other plain artists out there for you to enjoy. I for one, will be watching this ground breaking artist continue to grow over the coming years into the legend she will surely become.

      Well, Beyoncé is playing Etta James in the movie so she is acting out what the lyrics meant to Etta and it obviously becomes very emotional in that scene. I guess it is fair to say that Angelina has not yet experienced what Etta went through and had to find a different kind of connection to the song. Thanks Andrea for this birthday reaction. 👍

    Hello Andrea! Great reaction again ! It's always nice to hear another singer's reaction to her, and their takeaways. The funny thing with Angelina is that when you think you start to get the essence of her, you hear something TOTALLY different, and you have to begin anew. LOL We've all been there. Cool to hear that you love her GRASPS and ROWLS as you put it :-))))
    But what you said is all correct IMO, and that she sounds effortless is something every reactor comment on, it's so very apparent. And it's true.
    Lastly I have the perfect song for you to react to. Mark my next 4 words. WHEN SHE WAS TEN years old, she made a studio recording of "I'm Still Holding Out For You" and that performance is WAY beyond incredible. It was the definite proof that Angelina could do anything, and sound absolutely NOTHING like a ten year old girl. It's actually totally crazy. You will understand. The recording itself is shrouded in a bit of mystery, as it was never released. Some speculate that is was due to the lyrics, that they were a bit inappropriate for a ten year old. Anyhow, a fan kept a copy, luckily, and put it out there a few years later. That's why it says "leaked" in the description. Most of her hardcore fans rank this among her VERY best ever, me included. It's probably on top 10 on EVERY fan's list. Again you will understand. Enough rambling already, here is the link: czcams.com/video/Dv8mjCh5iiE/video.html
    Thanks for doing a reaction on her 16th birthday. It's very much appreciated. Take care of your throat and stay safe! Love from Norway :-)

    Angelina's control of her voice (her "instrument") is simply off the charts. What you're hearing at the beginning (and occasionally at the end) of many words in this is known as "vocal fry." She also can add rasp (which she does in this) and growls when she wants (though she doesn't in this track). Her breath control is unbelievable too, evidenced in her incredible run toward the end of this performance (a single breath that goes on forever). Primarily, this a "master class" in vocal fry that all vocal students should study.

    Actually this is not the voice she found, just one of the many voices in her tool box. She is just sitting around at home on her couch trying out her new Mic and one of her other voices. You will not find this particular hard core rasp and fry in but a couple of songs she has covered. Listened to some older live Etta James concerts where she does actually use vocal fry, not to this extent though. Only true jazz/blues singers can do these types of vocals, and here we have one in Angelina.

She is unique, truly unique. I do hear the influences of Etta James, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, but here she is a combo of Bessie Smith and Janis Joplin with Aretha Franklin thrown in. Angelina has integrated into her all of her influences and this is pure jazzy, soul music, and r & b.

    She’s 10 with no mic & just sitting on chair. Angie does a great interpretation of this difficult song to interpret.(warning serious Cute factor at the end) singing this to her grandma.
    “Stay” by Rihanna czcams.com/video/IJv-cI_482k/video.html Angie is 12 here.
    “It’s a man’s world” by James Brown czcams.com/video/HEm7tGrjIKk/video.html Angie is 12 doing a outdoor concert, a musician said she hit a E5-G5 on the big belt near the end. Angie really knocked it out of the park with her arrangement.

    One of my top ten AJA performances, but I think she was only testing the new mic, to see if it would get on fire. Surprisingly it didn’t 😁

    Do you know the version of Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa? If not, you really missed something. This one is just Angelina. More and more I think, she is uncomparable, because unique and just brilliant every time, she opens her mouth. But if you like this song, check out Beth& Joe. More suggestions? "Mans World" live with Forsvarets Stabsmusikkorps. Breathtaking. And happy birthday again, Angelina!

    I will say something about your singing. From what I've watched. Your holding back. Your keeping your emotions in check.like you don't want the world to see you exposed. Girl ,,,music is ALL feelings. It's what makes it real. Without that reality. You might as well sing in the shower. You underestimate your potential.ive been doing sound almost 35yrs .from Nashville to Florida. Worked with Metallica to Barbera mandrell. Eddie . money,phil çollins. Skid row pantera. Red hot chili. Peppers to every concert played in Miami and Florida .you got pipes girl. I watched you sing on a reaction. Of angelina.and your boyfriend Sked so bad on guitar he killed your cover. I did sound for Charlie Daniels in Florida in the 90s Amy grant. Guns and roses.im retired now. Don't waste your time with people who hold you back. You have a beautiful voice. God gave you a gift.like he gave me ears.use it. Life is only once . 💕💯

    Another comment, she was playing around with her voice to see what she could do, she just had turned 13 and got a new microphone. Also remember her voice is constantly changing pretty drastically until she reaches 22 or 23. Shows her work ethic, constantly working her musical instrument to most possible perfection, God Bless!

      it's not about the quality or anything, it was more so about the interpretation and the artist's take. that's why covers are so interesting because so many singers put their own style into the song

    Hi Andrea, I may have already commented on this. I don't think I did, but if I am wrong, bear with me, You're absolutely right about the difference between Beyonce's version and hers. In fact, I went back and listened to the studio and live live recording by Etta James. You are right that this is a power version (just saying I agree with you, not doubting that you are right)) Not everyone is able to identify and share nuance between performances, covers etc, and when someone does that mne, that just increases my appreciation of the song, so thabk you.
    P.S. Enjoyed your little riff attempt on that last bit too..😊

    Great reaction. Angelina stays pretty true to the Etta James version that she sang live in her later years. If you listen to Etta James performing this song live in Montreux in 1975 it sounds similar in tone. Another good example of someone singing this song in this same way is Beth Hart czcams.com/video/BeK9m4y73HY/video.html.

    I never heard of this girl before. To me the very first thing I thought she really sounded close to is Janis Joplin: the style, the raspy, soulful voice, and the demeanor. And yes there is a bit of Amy Winehouse mixed in as well, but I lean more towards Janis Joplin. No doubt she is incredibly talented for such a young person. In my opinion, perhaps the overuse of the raspyness and stress on certain words could be dialed back just a tad. I know many will disagree with my view and that's fine. Overall she is impressive. And Happy Birthday if you read this.

    she is using her mic backwards, logo out, ... it is suggested it was on purpose and as it alters the sound for this. I wish it could be verified.
    THIS experimental track, so different than any other came in handy as her latest Cover, MERCY, uses a lot of this distorted approach, even more than DUFFY utilized.

    She uses the rasp with restraint. The rasp is the mustard on the hot dog. In some places where she holds a note the sound is clear. So, using the rasp sparingly gives a great contrast. We appreciate both the raspy and the straight sound more because of the contrast between them. Watch this video and study it; it's a master class in the blues and singing in general.
