    Out of all other youtube videos about licks practice, you're the only one who put some background of where the licks are based on. These are some really useful tools for us to create our own lines. Awesome content as always, and look forward for more 🙋

    For us wannabe serious piano bopers out here, these lines are like “tablets from the Sermon on the Mount”. Wonderfully bluesy in context; practical and great for our ears. Keep it coming.

    This video really helped me make a breakthrough! Huge thanks for all the work that went in to it! There have been breakthrough moments where under the influence of this video I can feel myself playing at a level I hadn't experienced before. This video was the scaffolding that took me there.
    I have been working on learning to play jazz for a couple of years now. I have a piano teacher but progress has been halting. I had tried practicing different scales, tried to learn riffs from musicians I liked, watched countless videos about "tricks" to play bebop, etc. Often, however, if I tried to learn something in isolation -- such as a using a particular scale over a particular chord; or a particular riff or line; I would end up with something that I could recall if I consciously tried, but which was really hard to integrate more fully into my own playing. It felt that whenever I went back to trying to improvise on my own I fell back into the same habits. Also, I had more theory in my head than in my hands, so there was a huge gap between what my hands could do and what my head understood. And finally, there was often a missing element in my playing - it didn't sound "jazzy" and I had a hard time figuring out what I was missing.
    This video, however has been perfect for me. It has hit the sweet spot in all those areas. It feels to me like a distillation of essential elements of jazz playing that are laid out one after the other, but still forming a whole. I can practice a single lick from a measure that I like - or see how 4 measures fit together - or how 8 measures hang together, or how the overall performance builds over time. The left hand is minimalist, which really helps me hear what's going on - the relationship between the solo line and the harmonic structure. The added hand-written notes are a master stroke. They are there if you want to see them, but don't distract from focusing on whatever particular element you want to see. Because there is no voice over, I am free to pay attention to different things on each listen. I have listened to and enjoyed different jazz videos on CZcams, and I like and greatly respect many of them. I find different videos useful for different things. This video, however, has been perfect for me to actually work with, rather than just watch.
    One of the other commentators said that they "spent too much time watching you play and not enough time practicing your stuff". My personal feeling about that was - Great! I had the same reaction. I realized, however, that it meant that it was trying to get into my ear. I listened any number of times before I started trying to work with the video at the piano. When I did, however, the sounds were already working their way into me. I then started to try memorizing the lines a measure at a time. I have largely learned 32 bars now - though not perfectly. I also pick up individual bits, and focus on particular segments where I want to figure out what I like about that particular place. I have never been focused on memorizing - probably not good enough to do so effectively - but have found that getting this video into my head and partially into my hands has really helped. At this point, I find that I can borrow a bit, such as the beginning of a phrase, and then use that as a starting point for improvising - but managing to capture something of the feel you have on this video.
    I am deeply appreciative of the time and creative energy that went into making this - not to mention the years or practice to achieve this level of playing. So a big thanks and please know that it has been very meaningful and helpful to me.

    Great stuff! This and other videos of yours are immensely useful due to their learning by doing approach! Question: On page 8 of your PDF, in the third bar of "Use Pentatonic Scales", you handwrote "E- pentatonic", i.e. E minor pentatonic - but isn't that the same as "C (major) pentatonic"? Which would match the Cmaj7 writting at the top of the bar, and thus easier to understand. What am I missing?

    • @IngoBlees
      @IngoBlees Před rokem

      This bar seems to be a mix of Cmaj-Penta and Gmaj-Penta, because both the C and B are used. IMHO - as a rule of thumb - the Gmaj-Penta sounds more interesting. For the other bars: I try to memorize the according pentatonics as minor pentatonics that start on the b3 or #9 resepectively - what is of course equal to the major pentatonics on the tritone. For my brain the minor third is easier :) Fantastic video: try to practice it in as much keys as possible, start with G, D, F, Bb and Eb.
