    Pac-Man has a terrific feel on the 800... Alley Cat is one of the all-time non-arcade greats too! 👍Atari had so many greats...

    Whichever way you slice it, that's a pretty good version of Pacman.

    Lots of games yet some of my favorites missing: Alternate Reality, Aztec, Montezuma's Revenge, Ninja, The Great American Cross-Country Road Race. The Atari 8-bit platform often escapes discussion but it had a decent library.

    When 8-bit Atari emulation became a thing, the games I downloaded (and continue to play regularly) were/are:
    Star Raiders (NOT Star Raiders II)
    M.U.L.E.
    Caverns of Mars
    Jumpman \ Best video game
    Jumpman Jr. / until Portal
    Captain Beeble (deserving of far more love than it gets)
    Lode Runner
    Karateka
    Boulder Dash
    Popeye
    They are, unintentionally, my top 10 Atari 8 bit games. (Didn't know there were 10 until I typed them here!)

      We had an atari (forget the model but I believe it was an ####XL) with 5.25" floppy drives and my neighbors older brother was in the "Computer Club" at school. He would bring home their library of games all on 5.25" floppies. Boulder Dash was one of my favs, also Spelunker and Miner 4029'er. At one point they had pirated arcade games that we needed to used this special cartridge with a little switch on it. You had to flip that switch at a certain time when the game was loading. Man I miss the 80's!

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I'm leaning towards no, despite being a huge Atari fan. I think it's a real missed opportunity.

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  Před 4 měsíci

      I think its a real missed opportunity that could have and should been so much more. For a start I think they should have done 2 models, like they did with TheC64 (same company behind it) a mini and a full size. One for the true Atari 8-bit enthusiast and one for the general consumer.
      Both should have been based on the 800XL as that's the most highly regarded and by far the best selling model in the range so would be the most recognised too. But when I was working with Retro Games Limited I suggested the idea of a XEGS Mini and even drew up a whole concept design and proposal for it, they told me it was really good but they didn't think an Atari 8-bit Mini would "sell enough units to make it viable." So it was quite galling to see them come up with this version afterwards. I actually posted the whole proposal on Facebook where people agreed it was much better than what's being offered.
      The 800XL (or XEGS) Mini should have had at least 50 games, or 64 games the same as the TheC64 did with a USB port in the cartridge slot to add more games. Retro Games Limited used the excuse of licensing for the tiny amount of games but this is total rubbish, as just including Atari's own games they could have easily hit the 50 (which would obviously require no licensing at all) and once you include I.P. owned by Retro Games Limited and their sister company Pixel Games, this number could be double that.
      Whilst the amount of games doesn't matter too much to the tech nerd who knows how to side load, perform mods and collects all these things it does to the general consumer. If you walked into a branch of Menkind or Game wanting a cheap plug and play console for a nostalgia hit are you going to buy a system with just 25 games or one with 64? RGL stated that there would be a full size in the future if this was a success, but their decisions seem to be setting it up to fail.
      For the price they are charging, which is actually MORE expensive than the 2600+ which plays real games, I expected a lot more. Plus the name is AWFUL - it should have been The Atari 8-bit, for brand recognition alone.

    • @TheLairdsLair
      @TheLairdsLair  Před 4 měsíci

      As I said, this isn't an Atari product as such, it's being done by Retro Games Limited, who also did TheC64 Mini and the Amiga A500 Mini. And unless this is a success they won't do anymore, they already said that.
      I wish Atari had done it themselves, as I'm sure it would have been a lot better (if the 2600+ is anything to go by!).

      @@TheLairdsLair Still lazy editing. Many of the titles are hard to see. It would have been better if you still put in the titles on a fixed part of the video even if it pops up a few seconds into the game. That way those who prefer to guess will still have the time before the title shows.

    Maybe Blaze Entertainment will add Atari's 8-bit line of computers to the Evercade's computer line of carts. We already have the first C64 collection, and in 2023 they will be adding Amiga games. Of course there are many computers I'd like to see them cover.

    An interesting video; but it would make easier to identify the games, if a title was shown. The sometimes the title screens don’t clearly show the name. Today was ok because the games were very well known, but is tricky with the obscure games and systems. Watched it again and realised the games looked ok compared to other platforms. The two computers looked funky. I never played them as I was a console gamer at the time.
