      Did some covers for a friend, painted the whole thing, used a sandingmachine and sanded just the top of the letters, and clearcoated the entire cover, came out perfect! Just be sure to take your time on the letter sanding xD

    Thanks for posting. I'm planning on getting my valve cover refinished and now I have an idea of how long the process should take. I'd consider doing the work myself but I don't have a grarage to work in.

    • @d4a
      @d4a  Před 8 lety

      +Demetrick Louis You really don't need a garage to do this. Its better if you do, but it isn't a must. Wait for a nice dry and warm day and you should be fine. The labor costs for this type of work are relatively high I assume so you might save some money.

    • @demetricklouis5710
      @demetricklouis5710 Před 8 lety +1

      I live in single bedroom apartment on the second floor. So I don't really have anywhere I can do the work without having to worry about overspray. Management would be too keen on me doing the work on property at all.

  • @cebastienlarochelle8182

    I tried it in a honda valve cover with the black one and it did a pretty nice job and i just quickly sand down it and afert spraing it put it in a furnance at 93 celcius. It looks line ferarri or honda type r engine but in black. Really nice product!

    • @demetricklouis5710
      @demetricklouis5710 Před 8 lety

      +Cebastien Larochelle The first owerner of the S2K that I recently bought did a black wrinkle finish on the cam cover. He must have not degreased it or something because it flaking off. The whole thing almost completely bare metal now, which is good for me because I plan to take it back to the factory look.

    • @d4a
      @d4a  Před 8 lety +3

      +Demetrick Louis An s2k engine is a very high revving sports engine, its cam covers might be getting hotter than 177 C, especially when driven hard - this is just a guess I might be entirely wrong. it is more likely that the previous owner did a very crappy job in terms of prep. I have been told that when it comes to painting anything, preparation is everything.

    No primer on the bare metal before painting? It's a great looking job and you obviously know what your'e doing. I've always heard to use primer, especially on bare metal. I was also wondering why no clear coat, but I guess that's just a personal preference. They look great by the way, good job.

    • @d4a
      @d4a  Před 7 lety

      Butch Byrd Thank you. I didn't use it because this particular product (vht) says it's not necessary. It requires only a roughened surface. Otherwise primer is a good idea of course. Clear coat not a good idea in this case because it would ruin the looks of the wrinkle effect. Otherwise a good idea too. It hasn't peeled or flaked anywhere, been driving the car for a few months now. It sat in the garage for over a year before that. Happy New year's :)

    I used this exact same product but black, instructions didn't say heating was mandatory for it to wrinkle. I dried it with a heat gun for a few minutes only, not enough for it to even start wrinkling, after a few hours it wrinkled by itself and it has a perfect finish. So I'm not sure if spending half an hour heating it with a heat gun to wrinkle it is entirely necessary :)

    • @d4a
      @d4a  Před 7 lety

      The first time I tried it I did it exactly as the instructions on the can said to do it. Results were horrible. Wrinkled in some spots and not wrinkled in others. Maybe it was a very hot day when you were doing it. Heat gun makes it failproof.

    No primer? VHT recommend to use engine enamel before. I am getting around to do the same myself and just wonder how long just paint will last?

    • @d4a
      @d4a  Před 9 lety

      TheDutyPaid You dont need primer, dont worry. the paint will last. Other people are pleased and have long lasting results. I have read the can and on the can itself vht recommends nothing other than a red scotch brite pad to roughen the surface up and a clean, degreased surface. The product is also advertised as a durable texture finish, heat resistant up to 170C and resistant to oil and chemicals.
      VHT also doesn't recommend heating the paint up after applying it. They only recommend baking as a way to make the wrinkles "tighter", implying that the paint wrinkles as it dries. The paint WILL NOT wrinkle by itself unless you expose it outside on a ridiculously hot and sunny day.
      The biggest danger is applying too much paint. If it runs, just start over again.

    • @TheDutyPaid
      @TheDutyPaid Před 9 lety +1

      mr2 mk1 hero I did my spraying yesterday. Used a primer and then paint on the next day. I also stuck mine in the oven as I wanted a very uniform wrinkle. I am more then pleased with the way it came out.
      I think VHT is the best you can get, there are a few others on the market but will stick with VHT.
      Also well made video.

    • @d4a
      @d4a  Před 9 lety +1

      TheDutyPaid The primer definitely cant hurt. Hope you didnt put it in the same oven where you make food :) If you did, replace it. this stuff is cancerogenic.
      I am really glad you are happy with the results. keep up the good work and have fun!

    You'd probably get better easier results if you use a compressed air system spray gun instead of the rattle can..do they sell that wrinkle paint that way? (not aerosol spray cans). But in the past, I have had to use paint sold only in spray cans, and I sprayed it all into a jar, thinned it a bit and than poured it into my spray gun.. works great but it does make you feel like a chump spraying it into a jar. Anyway, my job is small so I'll probably not do that, just suggesting it in case somebody is spraying more than 1 can or it's a big object.

    • @d4a
      @d4a  Před 6 lety

      zzubuzz They only sell in rattle cans unfortunately. Your jar solution maybe funny, but I guess it works. Thanks for sharing and thanks for watching.

    • @zzubuzz
      @zzubuzz Před 6 lety

      Use a canning jar btw, which is the only way to get a good seal and you must wipe off the lid which contacts the jar, I have a major hobby of spraying lacquer on guitars and found this to be the best way to store it. The rubber on the lid can and will be deteriorated by contact with strong solvents like acetone, so if the seal is leaking, replace the lids as necessary.
