    This song was written in 1971. They had split up for almost 2 years. Finally Robin showed up at Barry’s place, and this song was written. Maurice met them at the studio to record it. Robin said it was written and recorded in about an hour. It became their first US #1, and has been covered by many people. My advise is, when available, go for the earlier versions of songs when they were in their prime. For comparison, watch a live version of this song from either 1971, 1975, or 1979. Their voices were stronger. The 1971 will also reflect their age and the fashion of the day. On the same day, they also wrote and recorded “Lonely Days and Lonely Nights,” another big hit. There is an official video for it that ends with them getting back together. So when they say, “Where would I be without my woman?” what that really mean is, “Where would I be without my brother?”

  • @kathystammen3060
    @kathystammen3060 Před 2 lety +7

    One of the most beautiful songs ever written in my opinion, this is one of their classics. The story behind it is that Robin left the group and he was gone for two years and when he came back Barry and Robin wrote the song so it has a lot of sentimental value as well.

    Al Green did this song. Written of course by the Bee Gees. So many songs by them covered by other artists. I do have to give homage to Al Green’s version. A total different vibe. Yet in this song, both the Bee Gee’s and Al Green made it their own and did it justice.

    Agree about the arrangements and how orchestra complements the lyrics. Fun fact - though they wrote their own songs, they never learned to read or write music. Organic talent

    There’s something about Robin’s “older, mature voice” I love better than younger Robin. But don’t be confused, Mo will ALWAYS have this girl’s heart. I was raised in the wrong decade. Side note: Mo did most of the technical and arrangements. He’s a genius in his own right.

    As one said below, the song was written in 1970 on their get together meeting. The same day they wrote Lonely Days.
    Lonely Days was released on their 1970 album 2 Years On. How Can You Mend A Broken heart was released on the 1971 album Trafalgar.
    Run To Me was written for the album To Whom It May Concern from 1972.
    After 1972 they had a little down periode before they teamed up with Arif Mardin who got them more into R&B. The 1974 album Mr. Natural was the first try, a very good album but not a commercial succes.
    The everything changed in 1975 when they released the single Jive' Talkin'. It was a released with blank white label and out of curiousity the radio stations started to play it. That was the begining of 5 years of unimagingable succes until the Disco backlash in 1979 with the Disco Demolition Night on July 12 1979.

    This song was written in one day...the day Robin went to Barry's home and they sat together and resolved to get the group back together. They called Maurice to come over and the brothers sat and wrote this song. Autobiographical?

Barry did a 45 Minutes-Appereance, that made the crowd feel like they were in 7'th heaven. This song he sang there with Olivia Newton-John. But I'd like, you would check out the last song-couple of this amazing concert. They sang together "Guilty" and "You Should Be Dancing". I note your comment on how the music complements the lyrical performance...Well you should listen to the audio version from the 70's. Here, in the Bee Gees performance, they clip short the lyrics. In the original recording the music flows better as do the lyrics which are NOT clipped, but allowed to flow softly to their natural conclusion. It's well worth the listen. If I'm not seriously mistaken, You will like the earlier version better!
