  • Hey guys! Interested in learning how to deal with an aggressive horse? Need help desensitizing or putting the first ride on one? We have a new training series coming out soon. This is your introduction to "Nala", a young quarter horse mare who came to us with a lot of natural fear issues. She has struggled to interact with humans from early on, but deep down is a sweet heart. She was sent to us to be started under saddle. Subscribe to stay up to date on her progress!!

      @@greg77389 Most people who have worked with horses in those days now are against those methods and acknowledge there are better ways. Ultimately if you can get the horse to see you not as a potential predator but a teammate it builds more of a bond in that animal. The old way didn't work, that's why we don't do it anymore. Also because it is cruel.

    I’m glad that someone actually recognizes that some (but I find very few) horses are only defensive! Not aggressive. And just need someone to gain their trust and say “hey, I know you are scared. Instead of being enemies, let’s work on this together.”

Still learning with the young one. Looking forward to watching her training. There is t a lot about training aggressive horses on CZcams.

    Excellent exchange of communication and understanding this horse. Great patience and respect shared with this horse. She just wants to know you are not a threat ..... the big yawning and licks and chews are tension release .... it is so nice to see you allowed her to come to you and release all the tension. It helped her to relax and open up to your touch which she knows is not a threat .... beautifully done ... a win win for the bond built here between you both.

    One of my mares( a ex trotter 6yrs old) we got her just a year ago and she behaves just the same as "Nala", ears back, bitting, kicking etc. I do most of my everyday work with my horses (4 mares) at liberty and she did originally cause me some problems. I don't know a lot about her background but she does have lines of white dots along her spine and across her flanks which can only be from bad fitting harness. She is also a windsucker/cribber. The more she did the ears back, nipping etc. the more I rubbed her neck or face and talked to her, it worked. Really enjoying your video's.

    This brought back memories! Back in the 80s I used to take care of my neighbor's horses when they went on vacation. One time they had taken in a very fearful little Shetland - and warned me just to put food/water in her buckets but not to handle her. But after a few days, I saw something in her and began trying to win her trust. When the owners came home a few weeks later, they called me up and wanted to know what did I do to their pony! They said it was the first time they had ever been able to approach her - they thought I'd replaced her with another pony. :-)

    Wow, it takes nerves of steel to stand in a box stall with a horse with unpredictable behavior like that! Cudos to you! I find it interesting that she seemed just as surprised and freaked out as you were after her little lunge at you. I have a dog who was vaccine injured after a large round of puppy shots. She now has fear-based aggression towards strangers, and I see a lot of similarities in the "quirkiness" of this mare's behavior as well- the trying-to-trust-but-unsure, frequent showing of the whites of the eyes (whale eye), and sudden outbursts during what seems like moments where she is relaxing. Its kind of like a sudden panic when they realise they're letting their guard down. (Maybe I'm misreading or reading too much into this mare's behavior, but it strikes me as very similar). Anyway, fantastic job, I just subscribed and am looking forward to seeing this mare progress with your help! ❤👏

    Thank you for the update I'm actually handling a mayor and this isn't season every time I take her out of the stall you cannot look back because she'll lunge backwards and every time I turn the whoreson she rears up but she is very sensitive it could be because it's in season when the weather goes from spring to Summer she doesn't bite but she's very energetic like a Texas bull. I'm trying to have patience but I don't want her to do a 360 and kick me. Cause I've been kicked before luckily wasn't hard but still that's the worst patience is the key to everything.🙏♥️🐴🐴

    • @zacharias.horsemanship
      @zacharias.horsemanship  Před 3 lety

      I normally work with a horse like this until I see a recognizable, positive mental shift. Sometimes that can be less than 30 minutes, other times it can take over an hour. But ideally I spend several small sessions with the horse throughout the day instead of one long one each day, until they begin to trust me and I have a starting point.

      @@zacharias.horsemanship I was watching a documentary about the horseman, Buck, in it they discussed one horse that was brought to one of Buck's clinics for help with starting the colt. This stallion displayed extreme aggression and was determined that it could have been due to the foal being oxygen deprived for sometime before they found him.

I didn't get any history on her when I got her, but after working with her to the point I'm at, I'm sure at some point she was halter broke where as when I bought her it was believed she'd never been touched. I had my horse become aggressive like this when I was forced to give her to my little sister and take over riding my sister’s horse. My sister’s horse was very wild, and she wasn’t as good with horses as I was, and my horse was older and better behaved. But my horse got angry when I started riding my sister’s horse, and she’d try to bite me and stayed mad at me for the rest of her life even after my sister’s horse died.

    At our barn we have this type of horse as a school horse and I had this mare several times and I had to deal with her without anyone telling me how to do it. It is very dangerous and irresponsible from the owner to let even a beginners work with this horse. She,s very under saddle but it’s a living nightmare to get her ready.

    You should never lock yourself in a box with an aggressive animal, no matter whether they are dominant or nervous, its pure foolishness, and she was lucky that she didn't end up kicked to the shithouse or having her throat ripped out, believe me it can happen, but she has got a very good way of approaching and working with the horse, just needs to not let her ego fool her into believing that the horse wont hurt her, because even the most gentle horse can harm you. She does read the animal well, but unless you really know the history its a dangerous situation.
