Honestly it is tough, but God doesn't want us to have slaves, hence why there are things like the year of Jubilee.
But also, if God killed or destroyed us for everything He didn't like we'd all be dead😔
But the examples of how God wants life to be is the Garden of Eden pre-sin, and heaven/earth after the final judgement. ❤✝️

"However, you may purchase male and female slaves from among the nations around you. You may also purchase the children of temporary residents who live among you, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat them as slaves, but you must never treat your fellow Israelites this way."
    -Leviticus 25:44-46
"You may" is a way of permitting an action. And these are specific guidelines as well so it's unlikely a metaphor. Spin it how you want, god is telling you slavery is okay.

Let me put this into perspective. First off, biblical slavery wasn't the same as modern day slaves. In these times, slaves were hired to pay off a debt. They weren't taken or forced to work against their will, (in fact, the Bible actually speaks against that.) they willingly became slaves. Secondly, in this time period, having slaves was seen as the norm. The slaves didn't have rights, no repercussions for killing them, etc. But, looking at early history and the rules the Israelites had, their moral standard was way ahead of their time. These slaves were given rights, food, a wife, and the ability to stay or leave after a certain amount of time (or they could buy themselves out at any time). The fact that you could be killed because you killed a slave was UNHEARD of. Also keep in mind, and this has been echoed many times throughout scripture, the Mosaic Law was TEMPORAL and applied to the Israelites up until Jesus, where he established his own covenant. Having slaves was a way for the economy to thrive at that point. Not having slaves would result in so many homeless families and deaths. And, I'm sure you're gonna say, "well, he could have just banned slavery," and to that I say, absolutely not. That would have been a horrible idea. People had already rebelled against God's word (A good majority, actually), so if you were to ban something that was deemed so acceptable at the time? People would go haywire, and they'd rebel against it. So, that would mean slaves would still exist, but this time, there wouldn't be any protection for slaves. Instead, God REGULATED slavery. You couldn't just go out and get a slave willy nilly. And, as for the people who weren't Israelites, these people being enslaved were partaking in pagan practices such as child sacrificing, beastiality, etc. If they were to convert to an Israelite, obviously, they wouldn't deal with those things. Hope this helps!

    • @branver1172
      @branver1172 Před 6 měsíci +20

      God does condemn these things.
The Bible is one story. God set ups His ideal in the Garden of Eden. People ruled over animals, not other people. He then made laws in the OT which took peoples hardened, sinful hearts into account. Then in the NT he reiterates much of the garden ideal.
When God set up a civil law for Isreal in Canaan, He sometimes made laws that were not the ideal. They were for people’s hardness of heart.
For example, Jesus said Moses gave certificates of divorce for people’s harness of heart, but it wasn’t the ideal. I believe it polygamy and slavery fit in this category.
They were not the ideal set up in the garden and they are later censured in the New Testament when the Holy Spirit comes in and softens our hard hearts. When Gid gives a new heaven and a new earth and our hearts are perfect we will no longer need laws about slavery, for example, because it just won’t exist.

Creating laws and regulations is not the same as supporting. There are laws about murder, does the Bible support murder? Obviously not! God knew that even if he said not to do it it'd be done anyway, as is human nature, therefore the best course of action would be to create protection laws.

Of course, slavery existed during those times. However, it wasn’t the chattel slavery that took place in the United States, the Caribbean, and everywhere else. Chattel slavery is where you are not considered a human. Even if lifetime, slavery as described in the Old Testament was not comparable to whatever poorly formed argument you’re trying to make for two reasons. 1. Slaves could run away if the situation was bad, either to outside Israel or to another region. There’s no provision for returning runaways anywhere in the text. There’s also a LOT of rules concerning treatment that puts them in the category of “person”. There’s so many “outs” of slavery that it’s a wonder that someone that didn’t want to be there could be kept IN. 2. Gentile slaves came from either conquest or purchase from foreign markets. It wasn’t like Israel could have its own markets because of the ban on kidnapping. Which, again ruins your attempts to connect the Bible’s description of slavery with what people in the US first think about when hearing the word “slavery”.

    1) BLACK kings found much profit selling off their own kin overseas. Mansa musa is the wealthiest Africa king in history yet much of his wealth came from slavery
    2) the first federally recognized slaveowner was a BLACK man named Anthony Johnson

The Bible talks about how we as believers went from slaves of sin to slaves of righteousness, Romans 6:15-23. Everyone has a master, but you can’t serve them both. So much of this just doesn’t make sense.
Firstly, you admit that slavery was allowed in the Old Testament. Not indentured servitude, but slavery when you conquered a group in war. Then you go on to say that it is a GOOD thing, an act of mercy, to take the women into society and take slaves, granted that the Israelites didn’t kill everyone outright.
You say there are laws that address certain problems and this doesn’t mean God condones these actions but makes a law to limit or address these actions. Therefore, just because there are regulations to slavery, doesn’t mean God condones slavery, just like there are laws for beastiality. What is the law against beastiality? It’s death. Why didn’t God regulate beastiality? Why not make it so you can have sex with non-Hebrew animals rather than Hebrew animals? What about certain animals you can and some you can’t? Because beastiality no matter what is wrong.
What if we went to war in the Middle East and took them as property? Maybe take their wives so at least they will be taken good care of after we killed their husbands?
I understand the Old Testament was a different time, but then the Bible cannot be used as a mode of morality if it changes with the times. If we would not do what the Bible outlines today, then it is not objectively moral.

The New Testament is clearly against slavery and war. The Old Testament is the Age of Law. The New Testament is the Age of Grace. No follower of Jesus in the Age of Grace should ever support war or slavery for any reason, as clearly taught below.
Jesus says he came "to set the captives free and to set at liberty those who are oppressed." --Luke 4
"If anyone has an ear, let him hear. He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the endurance and the faith of the saints." -- Revelation 13: 9-10

"If anyone has an ear, let him hear. They who lead into captivity shall go into captivity; they who kill with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the endurance and the faith of the saints."
If you read the passage you are referring to in context, Jesus says two swords are "sufficient" for an entire group of people. Jesus was cautiously allowing for self-defense, which is not the same as war. War involves group-think, peer pressure and obedience from the top down. War is always about taking wealth or protecting wealth or as quite often the case, both.
The Crusades for example, were not religious wars; they were fought over land, a form of wealth, the grand prize being Constantinople. Self-defense is protecting one's physical self. Self-defense is not protecting property or any other form of wealth, as the life of a person is far more valuable than property, regardless of what European or American capitalists think.

Most modern Christians don't understand this, which is why in great error they blindly support American and other wars. Blaming God for what Christians do or what people in general do is very unwise, as we all make our own choices, while God reacts accordingly.

You DO realize that your ENTIRE outlook on this subject is shaped by a culture shaped by the Bible, right? The ONLY reason slavery is not officially legal in most of the world is because the West, via gunboat diplomacy and colonial ventures, used physical and economic force to end it. In some of those places (particularly the Islamic world), they don’t question the morality of slavery at all, only its legality. You also live in a society with a police force and aren’t in danger of being dragged off to who knows where, a situation that Old Testament Israel and even the early church wasn’t in. Slavery was a fact of life. The question is not “is it wrong?” but “how do you deal with it?”. If you look around you today, we still have slavery. It is only called with a different term. We work under bosses who can extract a lot of work from us while the pay is meagre. We work 7 days a week with no holiday in between. With the little money that we’ve got, we buy things so that our wives can make food at home. It may not be true in a developed country like the US, but it still exists in other parts of the world today. Not everyone “fights for their rights” or has an “association” to defend them. If they did, they would lose the only means to provide for their families.
So why does this form of slavery exist? Not because the “master” wanted to enslave them, but because the poor wanted some job to earn a living. If you ask why God allowed that to happen, it is because God cursed man that he has to work the earth and “eat the food by the sweat of his brow”. All of us need to work to earn the food we eat. But why do these inequalities exist? That is because not everyone is blessed the same way. The ideal thing to do is to raise their standard of living, but what happens until then?
God knowing this very thing, gave them laws as to how to handle this situation. And Jesus knowing the heart of God, raised this to a whole new standard when He said, “treat the ones under you as you would love to be treated yourself”. This summarizes how we ought to treat one another, whether slaves, colleagues or bosses.

forgive my ignorance but you said the one about if the slave got a wife from their master while a slave, then the explanation is that the woman is still serving her time so, she can't leave with someone who has served their time completely, but when you read further, it says if the man loves his wife and decides to wait for her, then he'll get his ears pierced and serve "forever", not for the time remaining for his wife to serve, so, is it really waiting for his wife to serve her time that's the reason he can't leave with her? or is it because(as it says), she's the master's property not the husband's

You could say the same thing about anything. But you need to remember that human beings are evil and that there is free will. There are passages in scripture about how God freed the Israelites from oppressive slavery. Also, if God was so supportive of oppressing people, why was there a slave bible? They took out most verses about freeing the oppressed so the slaves wouldn’t use scripture as a basis to revolt.
At the same time, sometimes bad things are legalized because people are straight up evil. We live in a world where people would rather do wrong than right. Like how I feel about certain forms of abortion. Killing a child is wrong but it’s legalized. So what, God agrees with it because it’s legal? No. This entire life is about whether you can do the wrong or right thing, with God as judge in the end where the world will be perfect and free from any kind of slavery or abortion. But you have to be the one to choose to make your heart ready and turn towards him. Repent! You can be at the front, urging people to do the right thing for God’s kingdom 🙏🏾

It's less of an argument against Christianity and more of an argument against the perfect morality/justice of the Christian god.
I don't think it's stale at all - if a holy book presents the supposedly perfect creator of the universe as decreeing no punishment for keeping slaves and beating them in certain ways, isn't that an impossible and relevant thing to consider?

Just my thoughts. In a different place Paul tells slaves to be free if they can. (I Cor. 7:21)
So, I believe this passage is talking to slaves who were absolutely stuck in a Roman system of slavery.
The main thing all Christians are called to is showing Christ to the lost. The slave is being told to be more concerned for their master’s salvation than themselves. To surprise the master with good and sincerely kind behavior even though the master didn’t deserve it. In doing this, they might be a witness for Christ who also was kind to those who didn’t deserve it.

    • @John-fk2ky
      @John-fk2ky Před 6 měsíci +2

Okay, let’s back up a second and look at the practicalities, starting with Christianity as a whole. First, encouraging running away would put Christianity in a bad legal light. Second, it would endanger Christian slaves throughout the empire. Third, part of being a Christian is being a witness to the world, and running away means that you can’t do that with your master or other slaves.
As for the slave himself or herself, you’re suggesting a course of action that might be WORSE for the slave than staying. Rome controlled everything touching the Mediterranean and quite a bit beyond it. To truly escape rather than spend the rest of his or her life as a fugitive, a slave would have to run away from the pinnacle of civilization in the west (China being its eastern counterpart) and flee to where, exactly? What’s now Scotland or Ireland? Germany? Those areas were highly tribal and in the latter case might sell you back to Rome for some wine. Anywhere else you might care to go would be similarly likely to seize you. That’s not even counting the likelihood that you will not know the local language or meet anyone that knows yours. The only other option is to live as a bandit, and your career will likely be short and end with a gladius in your stomach. This is not the antebellum South where you can run across a border and be free while living in a similar culture. There’s simply nowhere TO go. Given all that, Paul’s giving the best advice he can for slaves in general. If the situation is truly unbearable, there actually were legal remedies in the empire. They wouldn’t get you free, but they would get you away from a particularly bad owner. If you’re present so you can actually hear the letter being read (which is what would happen at meetings; copies were circulated between churches beyond the original recipients for teaching purposes), then since you’re among believers go ask for help. One of the richer ones might be able to buy you, and then you’d be safe.
