That’s a good book.
Dear Gary, I just want to thank you for the abundance of knowledge you share with us. I have learned so much from you and I also want to mention that you are the only one that IS NOT about having the camera in his face constantly like everyone else. It is so much better to watch the plants and see the actual interaction with them rather than watch someone's face as they go on talking for an eternity. You are an actual teacher and it is clear you want to share and teach in the most effective way. I just wanted to let you know how great this channel is and how much I really love it (you). Thanks again.
Thats a good point! I feel like i do learn more by watching the plant as he explains it :)
Good information thanks
@Lapis Mosi… so glad to read your comment. It’s exactly what I have thought & felt for so long, but, never wrote. I have always thought that Gary must have been a teacher in another life ..(a really good one!) 😉. This channel is the one I watch, faithfully. Have unsubscribed to many others for the reasons you mention.

His book is a great resource to have on hand also. It’s the clearest, most broad layout of basic applicable principles and knowledge that I have in a book honestly.
Another great way to use zucchini is to make flour out of them. We grate them and spread the zucchini over our dehydrator trays and dry them out. Once dry it gets put into a food processor and turned into flour. It makes great flour and is used at a ratio to regular flour of 1 to 1. The products don't rise as much but is a healthy alternative when needed for health reasons.
great to know, thank you.
Do you keep the seeds in or scoop them out?
@@zhippidydoodah the seeds are kept in
I had no idea you could do that with zucchini. It's definitely a multi purpose plant. Thanks for sharing
Loving this Squash and Zucchini series. Very timely!
Thanks. Going to check on them now from yesterdays pruning

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Yesssss this is so on time!! My zucchini is not doing well 😩
Gary you’re awesome! I really appreciate your attention to detail. There are so many videos out there with the same titles that sometimes never get to the point of what the video was about!! When I watch your videos I get exactly what I’m looking for without all the filling talk! Thank you!
I have never had any luck growing a garden . I stumbled across you here on CZcams to realize I was doing everything wrong. I took your tips and started seeds indoor, got my plots ready and holy smokes! I have way more than I can possibly eat. I have really aged manure, like over 15 years old that my plants love, though, I have taken your advice to fertilize. Thanks for the great videos.!
Cheers to your success! The aged manure is golden.

You have answered several questions I have had. I have just started planting in a small space, at almost 60. I wish I had done so 30 years ago :-) Thank you for your informative show :-)
Thanks to this video you taught me how to grow squash last year but I don't always remember everything this is a great reminder with even new ideas😎
Thanks so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge and experience! Videos are well done and so informative. Just purchased your book and looking forwarding to learning so much more about gardening.
Gary, Your video was an excellent learning experience for this first year gardener. Thanks so much.
So glad to help. I keep in mind it can be overwhelming. Ill be showing off how they look it this week Friday Morning Ramblings.

Happy to know the small rotting zucchini is a pollination issue. I had some and got discouraged but now know the reason and glad I didn’t pull the plant. I have lots of good, healthy zucchini’s coming on. Love the instruction for how to use the zucchini at different growth stages/sizes. Very helpful.
Very glad to help. Good luck

Thank you always for posting! Love you!
Beautiful results and great info
I just bought your book. I just moved back in February and had to start all over again with garden and dirt so next year hopefully it would be lot better than this year.
Dude, you taught more in this video about squash and zucchini than most college professors teach in a semester.
I think the old adage is, "Give a man a fish and he will never learn to grow his own food."
Teaching pruning with a sensible mindset makes the world a better place.
Thanks Gary! You are appreciated much.
So glad to help and my goal is to teach and get info to people. Good luck this year.
It is hard to say without pictures. However, there isn't much you can do but stick with the plan. They tend to work it out.

Thanks so much for the book support BTW. Cheers
Great information!
Thanks for this video. I have my 1st garden this year, and have been so confused over what to do and how to care for it. This video helped me a whole lot! More than others I've watched. My squash and zucchini are growing better than anything else I planted, well the beans are doing pretty good too. I noticed some squash bugs about a week ago, so I've been on here trying to figure out what to do, but I absolutely hate bugs, and have been wanting to just run far away from the whole garden, LOL! But I'm determined to make this garden work. Really enjoyed the video & it was very helpful. Thanks again!
Good luck. Doing a lot more videos for 2022 that will cover those subjects

Great advice!!! As I continue to live with prgressive vision loss, I put more value into preventative measures rather than relying on my sighted sous gardener. :) Being able to garden makes such a huge difference in my life, I am grateful to do it even though my mini trnips get bugs, and my squash plants get beetles. Thank you for showing how even fully sighted gardeners have to deal with these things. :)
Very glad to help. Hoping the best for you!
That was great Gary. Thanks. I was outside this morning trying to maintain the flowers. It looks like there’s more stems then zucchini, I did see one hiding and it got quite big but I’m going to sauté it with garlic and onion and some pasta tonight thanks for all your help I wasn’t sure if I could cut so many leaves off and now I know I can thank you very much for a doll😊

I love your channel. Thank you for the information from your indoor seed starting series because you saved us quite a bit. Six Black Krims, 6 Brandywines, 10 cukes, 50 peas, and many sweet peas. Oh yes, 4 zukes are too many for 2 people, 200 potato onions (doing wonderfully), 150 garlic (I think I got greedy and planted them too close but they are doing great!). Needless to say, my spring garden is over and the summer garden is in full swing. My husband and I love watching your channel and every time you mentioned using something OTHER than "organic" fertilizer or anything... I cringed because I know you'll get crushed in the comment! Thank you for weathering through the judgemental portion of the population 😂 We, little people, appreciate what you do. Thank you!
Nice seed starting. Glad to help and thanks for watching. Some people just don't have access or can't afford organic so I take my punches while informing othersLOL. Its not what it is but how you use it and understand what is in it. Thanks!

Gary, I just received your book, "The Modern Homestead Garden", in the mail today. This is a very good book. Loaded with information all gardeners new and old should have. For the new gardeners it will get them started on the right path without making costly mistakes. For the old gardeners it is a good refresher reference tool. Thanks for all you have done for us. By the way, that video on squash was just in time for me. My zucchini needs some help to stay healthy and your information is just what I need. Thanks again.

I’m just getting ready to plant my summer squash….hoping to miss some bugs 😀 using row cover until I see blooms.
I can't enjoy my first garden for the major mosquito attacks I get. 31 bites in 5 hours with essential oils blend. I lost 2 squash plants to vine borer. Got one left and it's going great. I trimmed it, added DE And put pantyhose around stems and straw mulch. Love all your great tips. I use Castile peppermint spray when I prune. Thanks

I've found that Squashs and zucchini are easier to grow and manage in Totes. I love my Tote garden, way less bug issues.
Gary I spray my cucumbers and squash with the Dr bronners peppermint Castile soap after pruning to cover up smell. I started with 4 squash plants and now have one after the vine borer destroyed my other 3. So far my last plant shot up to 6 feet after pulling those plants. I finally see my first female flower today 😀
Thats a good way to do it. Totes are large enough. Nice tip on the soap. Thanks

Could you please explain staking zucchinis and summer squashes? Understood, you may not recommend, but I'd like to learn the technique. Thanks.
I like smaller Zucchini for slicing and frying and the bigger ones I grate to make zucchini bread but we also cube medium sized ones with other veggies and olive oil to bake 😋😋 Fresh out of the garden is soooooo wonderful.
So wonderful for sure.

Hey Gary,
Thanks for your sharing your wisdom. I started watching your videos about 6 years ago. I suffer from PTSD, as many other vets do. The garden is my escape... When you prune the zucchini, it open up the plants pheromones. What masking spray do you recommend. I buy my supplies from your shop.
Thanks,

What I do is prune and take a syringe w BT solution and place it in the tube left where the leaf began. It works. I actually grew 4 extra zucchini and spaghetti squash plants in a small space and was successful in transplanting them to another bed and they have thrived w this technique including injecting the plant base w a syringe and needle w BT solution when planting.
Great video!
Spinosad is the best killer for anything that chews your plants. It does not harm beneficial insects at all. I also trellis all my bush squash on cattle panels. They end up looking like trees.
How do you trellis them? I have a cattle panel arch and find trellissing my (vining) squash on it difficult. Doesnt seem natural
Thanks

Hey Gary, Awesome and super informative video as always! Do you insist on using insect dust and can the neem oil and peppermint oil sprays be a sufficient alternative?
Well its all about the pest or problem. And reducing down damage. I havent found neem or peppermint fully reducing cucumber beetles or borers.., enough. IF they aren't an issue, the dust sent needed.

Gary: SOS! What advice can you share with those of us who just had out plants beaten down by that wicked storm that came through MD this afternoon?
You said Not organic Sevin ? On bug dust is that because it doesn't work as well ? Thanks Gary 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
As far as the vine borers are concerned I had an antique gardening book that spoke of using liquid BT, and using a syringe that you can get at a feed store to essentially inject BT into the stem where the vine borers are located and eating the plant.
Haven't tried it but I'm about to just lost an entire crop of zucchini that my mother started from seed as well as yellow squash
I havent tried that but I heard it works and believe it.

Bt really worked for me last year, bloody vine borers wiped out half my crop before i realized what was happening, but it's almost impossible to find in store in my area, I'm trying liquid spinosad this year, just be careful with spinosad as it's dangerous to bees for a few hours after applying
What type of hand granular fertilizer do you use? I haven’t been able to locate this in my area.
You have some gorgeous squash plants. Man I miss the soil up north...I literally plan on taking a grain truck up north to visit family and steal some black gold to bring back home to texas. and I'm not joking. You just drop a seed on that stuff and it is immediately going to grow into the most gorgeous thing you've ever seen. Not here in the southern part of Texas normally. Makes me sad every spring and summer.
I agree...
Hi I have been following your channel for sometime and I’m a newbie to your Facebook group and I absolutely love it. I have learned so much. My question is: Is the captain jacks ddb just as effevtibetas Sevin for cucumbers and Japanese 🪲?
The Japanese beetles are TOUGH, and Sevin can be pretty harsh, but if the other dust doesn't work, I know you'll have massive success with Japanese Beetle traps. They look like hourglass shaped bags, hang them a little ways away from your plants and soon they'll be 5lbs heavy with bugs.
I already lost mines to vine borers and powdery mildew but at least I got a good production while it lasted.
You can always plant again too.

What about growing them in 5 gal buckets? Just dust them? Thanks
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS!! when you say pruning, it means only the main stem? not the leaves?
I remove leaves. I typically prune back leaves that are blocked by other leaves

How large are your beds for the 2 squash plant per bed video, please?
My first planting of zucchini and squash just weren't productive and I replaced them with different varieties and some extra plants. Now it appears we have much healthier plants and are probably going to have a lot of zucchini and squash, more than we will be able to use and freeze. But that's a good problem to have with your garden. My 1st zucchini produced 3 different shaped zucchini 1 regular shape, 2 bulbous at the blossom end like a squash and 3 bulbous at the stem end. Plus most of them weren't fully pollinated. With half of July still left I had plenty of time to move on and try something else.
A good problem for sure. Glad you stuck with it.

My grandmother had one know sorta a annual & a perineal in one. Just wondering if you ever tried to grow it. I obviously season 1. Anything you can share will help. Many thanks

Will yellow squash still grow if the flower falls off from rain?
I have learned MORE about real pruning and vine topping, and proper ID and reasons why to do what, in these 18 minutes than I have in 8 years of gardening, watching other vids, talking to alleged 'master gardeners' and using every book my library could give. You are a GODSEND. But I'm left with one question. Do you compost those pruned leaves, or burn them?
So glad to help and this my night but right but it works LOL

Take the process one step further and tie the main plant vine to a stake. The stake will keep the vine going upwards. Trim all the leaves and secondary growth points below the lowest set fruit. By keeping the main stem staked and all the lower leaves trimmed, you prevent powdery mildew, reduce the chances for vine borers through visual inspection, you can grow more plants in less space and if you're pollinator challenged, makes it easier to hand pollinate.
Great tip

I am a brand new gardener. I have two zucchini plants that I planted in the end of May. Here we are in late July and I still have not had any female blossoms (meaning no fruit.) They were putting out blossoms (one a day) until it rained for a week straight. Now I have not had any blossoms for over two weeks. What can I do?
Every year I get a sever invasion of squash bugs . Unfortunately I haven't had luck with soapy water so I will try liquid 7 .
Good luck

What dust product do you use on your zucchini. I may have missed it.
This is my first year having success watching your video. I planted them on April 16-2024 and today is may 13 with 4 zucchini already. I am so thankfull for your video. Keep up the great work.
Typically something organic with spinosad. If that doesnt work. Sevin Dust. Not organic though.

You mentioned watering them only 3x/week. I would love to see a future video covering your system / technique of tracking which plants need to be watered each day. Do you create a markable spreadsheet each year since each plant's watering needs vary?
I don't have a spreadsheet because it just varies way too much. East verses West coast. Humidity on not. Plant size and temps. Just too many variables. Earth beds verses containers. When you are pushing upper 90's, it could be daily. Sorry. I have though about it but it would be almost impossible unless you lived next door.

The main reason I grow zuchinni is to make lemon zuchinni bread... it's to live for. Zuchinni sliced long are good for making lasagna without pasta. You can also make them into delicious fries. Last year I canned some in pibeapple juice and they can be used as I would for any canned pineapple, as they take on that flavor. So I plan to use them in breads or cakes. Sometimes, when I have more than I can use or process, I grate it and freeze in bags for later use.
Makes a great bread. Great tips. Thanks
