Pro-Palestinian protesters at UCLA stand ground, refuse orders to disperse

- Thousands of people took over the University of California, Los Angeles campus Wednesday night, just short of 24 hours after violence broke out between demonstrators in the pro-Palestinian encampment and pro-Israeli counter-protesters.
On Wednesday, Sky5 was overhead as a large law enforcement presence began to position themselves on different sides of the encampment. Not long after police showed up, authorities ordered demonstrators to disperse, declaring the encampment an unlawful assembly over a loudspeaker.
Aerial footage showed hundreds of demonstrators locking arms in front of the path leading to the encampment and reinforcing barricades, as law enforcement surrounded the encampment.
Hours later, demonstrators were still occupying the encampment with police on the outskirts despite the orders to disperse issued earlier in the afternoon. At around 11 p.m. Tuesday night, some 50 pro-Israeli counter-protesters, many of them dressed in black and wearing white masks, lobbed fireworks at those in the encampment and attempted to dismantle the barricades.

I respect them for uniting and standing for voices for peace, and I respect people’s different views however from a lot of various news broadcasts it’s technically hard for me to think what they are doing is wrong. Yes it’s freaking finals. 😂
Obviously any student studying for 16 weeks , cramming for exams and not getting paid a dime to do so, but simply in pursuit of a peace of paper we as a society assure will bring them “success and freedom”, would like to get that damn paper and not have to stand outside for hours yelling.
However from a different perspective, having a degree is apparently not as powerful as it could be for influencing peace.
I know there’s no magic button. I love their advocacy and courage.
It’s easy to stay quiet in this world. I’d never want to silence someone’s self expression. Can you imagine not being allowed to speak your mind or what matters to you?
My concern is when ANY group of ppl gather in large groups and ppl get tired and react physically.
I hope the students remember that the human being in a law enforcement uniform has likely got kids, rent ,and orders to be there.

KTLA has done a fantastic job covering this. I very much appreciate the professionalism as the difference between staying impartial and leaning partisan is so subtle when reporting on the action they have witnessed. Things like stating the matters of fact about the police's presence when people are peaceful and their absence when people are being violently attacked. These are facts that are very easy to give way to anger and frustration toward the police, but KTLA has done their job in keeping their coverage factual and their wording detached. It makes it all the more impactful when those flat facts are so enraging, because it does not even require inflammatory rhetoric to be angered by the mishandling of this situation overall by law enforcement.
How the police can show up with riot gear when the encampment was peaceful, then disappear entirely when the actual riot started by people attacking that encampment, and now are literally storming the peaceful encampment lobbing explosive flashbangs at people who just yesterday were having explosive fireworks hurled at them in a violent assault. None of this is OK, and the facts show it plainly without ever needing to take sides on the protested issue. This is a total 100% failure of law enforcement to protect the people.

I've seen in several of these videos The students are asking for divestment from Israel's involvement in funding.If this does happen they can watch their tuition go sky high not that it isn't already. Many donors who do not support the protest may also stop their funding.
