I really wanted to try Rell top when I first saw her. She seemed like a cool, Kled, Singed, mix with Mordakaizer's old E. Unfortunately, her E doesn't work on minions like his did. I hate when they force a champ into a specific role like that. They are already going to rework her so I guess they realized they messed up.
Well, she's really niche. And when you're as niche as skarner, you get reworked.

I played a lot of skarner top. He can be played top or jg with relatively little problem. Rell needs this rework MUCH more than he does.

@@HeadRedShot I mean not just that, riot did her so dirty. In her lore she is probably one of the most powerful mages we've seen, she can locate metals deep beneath the earth, super heat armor to melting points, and she is a support that does no damage, and only offers cc.
It's the same strategy that Skarner top otps use. Korean tops are EXTREMELY aggressive so they will get baited all the time even in high elo (the Baus said the same on stream). So they are focus on solo killing you,so just bait them in tower range and use hard c.c.
But keep in mind this is not really good because your jungler needs to play around you. Korean junglers are way more top focus than other regions.
Skarner belongs in the grave, leave him alone.
NA top is a isolated island 🏝. Besides when the enemy top jungle are duo lol

if i got a dollar every time baus was 1 hp and had w up under tower, and the enemy top laner and or jungler was baited for it and die, i would be filthy rich. Don't see it as much in NA.
Watching Rell and Sej duke it out in mounted combat looks cool as hell, I really hate how rell looks like she's permanently bowlegged after dismounting lmao.
i legit can't play rell or watch anything of her dismounted without bursting into laughter, it looks like she shit herself and is forced to walk in it the entire game by riot as punishment..
Man Rell was my first main (I just liked her design a lot as I was coming into league), but I quickly realized I liked top lane a lot more than support, so I spent 2-3 of my first months playing trying to make Rell top work. It kind of did, especially when I had a friend as out jg, but it was really hard and absolutely didn’t fit the more aggressive play style I eventually leaned towards.
She’ll always have a place in my heart tho, and I really hope they rework her in a way that she could actually be played as a normal top laner
It did work for me. I usualy try to play quite safe until I get my hands on a demonic embrace.
Rell's Q becomes a decent poking tool.
Works especialy well against brawlers.
And it helps a ton with pushing the wave.
After that I usualy build a lot of tanking items. But then again, I'm no Master.
Though I suggest trying the demonic embrace. It's really efficient. It allows for a much more aggressive laning phase after the first item.
I love her theme and lore and VO but it's just so hard to force a champ designed so narrowly for a tank support cc bot like that into a solo lane, for me pure pain.

It’s probably not the champ or whether you main it or not. It might be the lack of game knowledge but you will learn the more you play. You got it king 👍

im confused, why wouldnt an irelia just run her down level 1 when she is Dismounted, with critically low move speed and attack speed, and no defensive nor offensive spells at all?
Since in laning phase, her goal is to bait and wait for ganks so she can just give up her early cs to avoid being ran down
Rell autos steal armour and mr so that with grasp you're gaining more hp and doing more damage while being tanky yourself
minions would fuck her up. rell used W in middle of the lane and instantly started walking back to her side at the start of the lane, so most minions were still alive and out of irelia's Q range. plus because rell's passive takes some of irelia's armor for herself, the outcome of irelia walking into rell's wave would always end up as a bad trade given rell takes less damage from both melees and irelia (who isnt full stack) while irelia would take a ton of damage from the casters with the reduced armor.

no passive, if she starts auto'ing the rell without having her passive, she will take too much damage from mininos. You see rell back off after she gets 3 stacks and there are no more minions left.
You know it kind of makes sense that she should be in top lane. Lore made it seem like she went thru grueling forced training under the Black Rose (Leblanc's faction in Noxus). I wish Riot made her a full-on Juggernaut the way her kit makes it seem. It's should be the same with Alistar, who also fought in Noxus' gladiator rings.
Alistar's old kit was more reflective of this w/ bonus AD on his ult, a hefty self heal, and ap/ad bruiser scaling similar to the old Sion kit. Riot employees are bipolar now. Locking champions into roles after making that whole spiel about not locking champions into certain roles. I think the jungle changes were the beginnings of the end. Or, perhaps, ever since they introduced support items.

People keep bringing this point up again and again, the she should not be locked to support because she was forcefully trained to be a soldier, It's not hard to see someone who was forced to kill their peers in training to become a tool of war and escapes from that would vow to use their powers to protect instead...
@@asnalem4391 but at the same time she should be allowed to be able to stand on her own given the skillsets that was forcefully ingrained in her. Protecting someone doesn't purely mean using skills defensively, sometimes it can be used proactively (you know best defense is a good offense).
Just look at Pyke. He's a prime example of a role that was shoehorn to support but can kill a carry on his own if given the resources. A support, unless he/she is an enchanter, should be given the means to be a threat to an adc especially early-mid game.

Thank you for making this guide. I am a adc/top main and have always liked rell, but never found a place to play her. She's so underplayed and brings a breath of fresh air to top. And she's getting a SG skin which is great!

I already have an account with almost 150 games of Rell but midlane, always believed that everything is playable in solo lane as long as your fondamentals are strong enough and your adaptibility to how to play this to still be usefull.
I'll also add that everything you say in the video il literally how i figured out after like 15/20 game how to play here, but in mid its kinda different.
Very true. Any champ in any role can work as long as you can find its effectiveness. That's why there are so many champs played in the Support role who can climb to GM, and Support champs going to other lanes and find their success so often to the point of getting nerfed.
Success will never find you in competitive games, especially if you follow a meta that other people created for themselves and already know how to counter. You have to develop it yourself.
Everything can be played any lane if you're good enough. Lourlo the NA Amateur toplaner did an A-Z challenge and ended in Masters. He lost more games on GP than he did on fake toplaners lol.

I played her once on top in ranked game against Pantheon. Dude complained a lot about her damage (XDDDD I KNOW HOW FUNNY IT IS). After his forth death he decided to go midlane. His teammates got mad and wanted us to rep him for troll. We won this game.
I saw this video and decided to do it and absolutely stomped a Tahm Kench. Baited them into tower and so on and perma cc'd and destroyed his shield when he tried to do it. Kinda nutty

Rell was meant to be a top laner. You can't just make a mounted knight and call it a support, being a support doesn't do Rell any justice.
Yeah, you cant make a literal top lane champion and then make them go support. Literally gives her the look of a top lane solo tank, then gives her the kit of a support. I mean the e and the q(q got nerfed so hard to make it a heal) are literally MADE for the support role while the w is flexible(you can never say no to a good engage on a toplaner) and the R is rells identity currently. IMO they could have made a q be better for just using it other than a heal and make an e which works on creeps or maybe even solo. They could have made her like tahm kench but sadly she is just a support

I actually prefer her jg. Her ganks are legendary. But as she's designed for support her numbers will not deal damage and she's pure cc. That's the problem.

You are truly delusional if you see rell as a toplaner, literally 2 parts of her kit(q heal and e ) don't work without an ally, aside from the fact she deals no damage and she is a cc specialist like leona. And her desing was made as a teenager who is a prptector of the innocents against the noxus empire and the balck rose with trust issues, that's why she was made a support

I suspect this only works in Korea where big ego montage players will actually int a Rell under her tower continuously because they don't know how to not fight. Try this against any Mundo and watch him farm for free all game because there's nothing you can do about it.

I was playing Rell Top for a bit with a similar strat, although a few differences, like buying tear into fimbelwinter for extra shields and unlimited mana. Been a while since I played it, but maybe I'll get back into it lol

This is beautiful. I've been doing this for years... Using champs outside their popular lines, I've been using karthus as a jungler from Seasson 6 when I started playing lol... I understand now there is a META for something but still thinking that there are champs who can do a lot more than what RIOT show us... They want us to play the meta they need to sell skins for..

I've played Rell top when she first came out as a joke, but she felt really good at the time versus champs like Shen, Riven and Camille when they were very strong at the time. The only lane I took Rell in was top. Haven't played her in a bit and now I see this. One of those "Fuck yeah" moments.

Tbh I really wish Rell was designed as a top laner or jungler. I love the mounted knight archetype and I wish she wasn't RELL-egated to support. This gives me some hope.

As I try both, I feel like it's a lot different. Problem with Rell is her wave clear is absolutely terrible, while Alistar isn't, and Aliatar has a lot more solo killing potential. Also Rell's short trade isn't easy as Alistar.

can't belive I tried a couple of months ago to play rell braum and leona on the toplane with full earlygame aggro runes, I even went the same runes as in the video, and the heal you get from hiting multiple people with q if you have a theathered ally is insane

I feel like Rell is what happens when you try to balance an overloaded kit. You end up tweaking the numbers into non-existance. Which as a Support, who usually innately trade scaling for crazy good base stats, is a little damning.
I mean Riot clearly still see's Rell as a potential problem, seeing as they never reverted her nerf to her armour and HP. And I can understand why.
Her Q breaks Shields, applies passive and has 5% percent missing HP healing, increased by number champs hit, and also heals an ally for that same value.
Her passive potentially makes an entire team super squishy and Rell a indestructible wall.
Her W gives passive movespeed to encourage roaming, and two amazing engage/mobility options, one of which comes with a nice shield.
Her E gives her and her ally armour and also can create a crazy good aoe stun for engaging.
Her Ult is probably the simplest and weakest part of her kit due to how it works, and yet it still sets up wombo-combos.
So why is Rell so awful? Non-existant AD and base damage on Q, non-existant attack speed to even apply passive with, Q applying passive only to the first target hit, W turning her into the slowest character in the game.
She's a walking contradiction. Having the ability to do some disgusting plays and being extremely punishing for failure, but her numbers are so damn low she can never abuse her kit to it's full potential.
And you can tell she was supposed to be a Samira extension. The way their kits interact on paper, Samira passive extending Rell W's, Eing on top of people for Rell E, Using Q and Ult to capitalise on a group trapped in Rell R, whilst Rell uses E and Q to keep Samira alive whilst Rell passive keeps herself alive and Samira shredding. They play into each other so much, except one was busted and the other was trash. It's like if Xayah released broken whilst Rakan released at Skarner or Udyr levels of playability and popularity.
Me before this video: Ah yes! All this hard work and I'm finally Gold! I feel pretty decent at my skill level and I actually kind of feel good about my gameplay! Nothing is going to ruin my day!
Me After watching this video: I've been playing League since season 2 and I can only get to Gold and this guy climbs to masters with a Rell top. What's the point of even living anymore...
It isn't even a secret champion tech or anything. The secret is the mindset of the player.
Many players just aren't patient enough to pull something like this off because the payoff isn't fast enough. They get impatient and try to make plays they don't need to do or try to force CS that actually doesn't matter in the long run.
And I know because I'm EXACTLY that way, lol. I one-trick Illaoi and she's notorious for having almost no agency in top lane and I fight the desire to get just ONE MORE MINION or try to fight a wave push when I know I shouldn't.
And I'm only in Plat 1 so I lose that struggle with patience more then I should, lol.
Happy to see there are still Rell mains out there. She needs some love.

most annoying piece of shit champ and borderline impossible to lane against with low mobility adc, but people doesn't care about champions with drawback for being greedy and rather all in as yone hoping one day it will work out in their favour
Hvae been playing this a lot since I saw this vidoe, and had lot of low elo success. No one expects the counterdive potential and the teamfights with flash are 99% wins. Try it in norms and clash homies!

This is interesting. But i think this is a case of unknown meta, once enough people become aware of her laning top, people will know to ward and care for ganks better and not dive her. Her real strength ultimately is tank supporting teamates which i love.
She’s like Leona meets Alistar with a negative morgana ult … love her design just see the weaknesses that make her not meta… her W is so easy to cc and it’s her best cc… the dismount

I recently using Lunar Stone item on rell instead of the shield item, 10k healing plus some AP scaling is absolutly insane, its an underrated pcik and combo with always an S+ in all diamond rankeds
I'd honestly like to see someone in KR one trick a Yuumi in solo lane, but otherwise every other champ should be theoretically possible

@@converser Yuumi is surprisingly good at short trade 1v1. Yuumi can prog her passive and shield bash at the same time which are pretty strong and annoying, more damage, shield and free mana for healling and more attack speed.

I have been playing rell top for a while it is pretty fun champion to play except your gonna have a hard time in a lot of the matches but suprisingly rell actually hav some favorable in some matchups like tahm, mal or even yone which is pretty hilarious. Rell top is def not as weak as what ppl think and her mid game teamfight ability is def better than a lot of top champions which compensate her weak laning
She’s supposed to be played support like Alistar… this guy is just built different
You actually need to be mega big brain to pull this strategy off. Rell is already hard to play but the support part never changes. Your ADC is your tower and grasp.
There's only one thing and one thing that Rell has that makes good at top and that she is a tank that takes enemies defences off it's just up to the player to know what to do all champs on league are like that (except for veigar of course)

No. because he doesn't want to play shen. He likes Rell and that's the best part. With his patience and dedication, he could climb faster and more efficiently but he is happy with himself and doesn't need to
shens engage and cc is not nearly as powerful as rells. he has more sustain and sustained damage instead. i mean rell has 3 aoe cc abilities and one thats targeted. all shen got is a straight line skillshot taunt. Shen does also have the global pressure with his ult tho.

I think this can be heavily countered by short trade champions like garen, gangplank and chogath
The champion is not bad even in support. imo The problem is that people don't typically communicate with one another and solo queue and she absolutely requires coordination to shine. She reminds me of when I would try to play taric support and people would walk away from fights instead of committing and trusting that my CC and healing would keep them alive
Rell top is actually good if u can be patient and it's a rly easy way to get M7 on her since no one plays her there
