You should add in the Tiny coal mod. It lets you break coal/charcoal into 8 smaller pieces that each smelt 1 item, makes it so you don't have to worry about wasting coal or having to burn your wood if you aren't smelting 8 items at a time.

You should also add Create and Create Crafts and Additions in order to get new mechanical blocks and convert forge energy to create energy

Your torches are probably too close. Mobs will only spawn if light level is 0.
