Asus ROG Ally vs Steam Deck: Which handheld wins?
Vložit
- čas přidán 20. 06. 2024
- The Asus ROG Ally is here to take on the Steam Deck. This new handheld gaming console features better specs than Valve’s machine, including a 1080p 120Hz display and the new AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip. It can also play Windows-compatible games right out of the box.
We've tested both systems and found them to be great for playing PC games on the go. But how do they compare against one another? In this video, we’ll go over what each handheld gaming console has to offer to help you decide which one to get.

While I much prefer the Steam Deck, I appreciate the Rog Ally and what it's trying to do.
I hope more brands try the handheld market, competition is healthy and each incarnation will improve the other one.
Good take
exactly what i was gonna say
competition will drive prices down and we know some chinese company will make some crazy cheap and powerful janky thing that you can hack and modify into something truly unholy and amazing lmfao
I just want a psp 4000, is it too much to ask for?
Same
The Variable Refresh Rate is what sold me over when I sold my Deck and picked up the Ally. The smooth butter frames is a significant difference that I can’t go back to the Deck even if I tried
Yea the SteamDeck feels like a prototype compared to the Rog Ally. And the Rog Ally feels like Asus said alright you don't want to work with us, we'll make our own one😂
The steam deck started it all and ASUS just opened the beginning to a serious competitive market! We are going to see every company coming out with their own versions of these things now, you watch! PC gaming just got boosted big time!
Meanwhile Playstation making an abomination without regret
Its not a competitive handheld until you actually have the battery to support the extra power lol.
Wtf is the point in using handheld that needs 30w to be more powerful, when its going to last 1 hour lol.
@@johnfrankster3244 Uuh, to use 30W you need a charger, without it it's 25W
@@johnfrankster3244 who games only on battery and lose performance? 🤦🏼♂️
@@Larseus Who the games on a handheld and doesn't care about battery. If your going to sit on charge for 10 years play on a desktop rofl.
Having less than 1.5 hours of gaming before you need to recharge is a joke, how many brain cells do you need to figure that out.
Performance is the key factor! No matter how good the user experience is, it will be useless if the FPS is low, so I go for ROG Ally.
I really like the extra performance on the ally but overall i can't really justify the price difference. most games i plan on playing works perfectly fine for the deck
I’m glad the steam deck finally has some competition here. Because while the efforts of Aya, onexplayer and gpd have been valiant, the low volume of those devices makes the price far too high, so asus finally stepping in should make the whole industry better
Steam deck being on sale made this decision a little easier but i am super excited to see where this market goes in the future
Valves ultimate move would be releasing a new z1 board with cooked up magic as a replacement for steam deck sustainability
The Z1 is just a very slightly modified 7840u, which is designed to be a laptop CPU and has all of the design goals of a good laptop CPU. That means it's designed to be a CPU first and foremost with the integrated graphics as kind of an afterthought and it's designed primarily for 20-45 watt gaming. A lot of the issues the Ally suffers from are a result of using this APU, but they also get the extra horsepower.
The Deck's APU is completely custom, and it was designed from the ground up specifically for gaming at 4-15 watts. It's why the Deck gets about double the battery life of the Ally. If Valve made a Deck with the Z1 APU it would basically just be an Ally except with steam OS and track pads, but the same battery life issues.
Pretty good video, small notes and I'm not trying to start anything.
1) Shown by most performance metrics of the ROG Ally, everyone seems to be bumping the resolutions down to 720p to get better performance and battery to beat the Steamdeck performance. You go to max 1080p on the ROG Ally and it's similar in performance to the Steamdeck. This is at the 15w measurements of course for both, bumping the ROG Ally to the 25w/30w may yield slightly better fps but again more so at the 720p Res. I feel the screens bigger draw is the higher gamut color range which the Steamdeck lacks and has to be compensated with a pluggin somewhat. Valve knows this is what owners want, so realistically they should stick to the 720p/800p for the best performance in games but go to an OLED like Valve said they are thinking of going to in the near future. I believe the 1080p resolution in the ROG Ally is a waste imo as it's been shown time and time again that no one games at that in handheld mode, it's bumped down to 720p for various understandable reasons. While 120hz is nice, very few games are able to get to that number without heavy compromises including visuals or battery life.
2) Keep in mine that Steamdeck can drop to 3w and even drop the GPU hz via the QAM, and depending on the game can run almost 7 - 8 hours for battery life. The ROG Ally buckles as you enter the 9w range and doesn't compete with the Steamdeck whatsoever in regards to power. You can try undervolting/underclocking the ROG Ally but that's for those that like to heavily tinker. Without doing that, the max the ROG Ally will get is 3hrs battery life otherwise, no matter the game. Just because you have better specs and higher numbers, doesn't result in a better experience always, there's other factors in play.
Just additional thoughts not mentioned in the review...
Never forget the trackpads. For some people they are a gimmick, but for me, it is essential.
@@kozuskoo Agreed, I use the trackpads to the point of mine being worn a bit - all due to shooters, RTS, and moving heavily in Desktop mode often. (Looking into trackpad protectors in the future.) A definite decision maker is the trackpads, can't go for a device without them imo.
That said, I do appreciate both of these more affordable PC handhelds that give you more bang for your buck. My original comment was more for context of what the reviewer was saying in regards to the 1080p performance of the Ally against the Deck's 800p. Wattage wasn't stated though but is a good component in the discussion as well.
GREAT comment
Great tip, I do this with my VR as well, just leave a fully charged battery pack plugged in while you game and it should extend your game time. During VR I was able to slip the pack into my pocket keeping it out of the way, same concept should work here.
You didn't mention what tbp's you tested at for what fps you got. It has nothing to do with windows 11, the ally sucks at lower tdp. Did you just use it as it came? I can easily get 120fps in Diablo 4 on my ROG Ally, you just have to think about what you're doing.
The Ally is an amazing device, but for ease of use, the Steam Deck wins hands down. The Steam Deck perfectly balances the ease of use of the Switch for the general customer with the ability to tinker that power users want. Sometimes I don't want to have to jump into desktop mode and fiddle with a bunch of stuff to get a game going - I just want to power up, hit a button, and start playing. The Steam Deck does that MUCH better than the Ally, currently. I'm glad the Ally exists though, it definitely shows this space is going to be heating up in the next couple of years and Valve has to keep on top of their game if they want the Deck to be a going concern in the long term.
The other thing people rarely talk about that this reviewer actually did mention - look if I want 60+ FPS with all settings maxed, I'll grab my laptop and set up somewhere. Cranking all of the settings to max on the Ally gets you about 1 - 1.5 hours of battery life. At most you're getting about 2h. I've comfortably played games like Divinity 2 and Nier on my Deck for four hour stretches. Emulation, almost six. Even No Man's Sky capped at 40 fps got me around 3.5 hours. People are kindof glossing over the fact that this is supposed to be a PORTABLE device.
Here we go again with the “Steam Deck can’t run everything” again. My argument is this Valve did make drivers for windows so with that being said just run windows and it will have the same library as ROG Ally and amp up your power plan to 95% and vram to 10000MB for the best experience
I was hearing that Valve was making it so Steam OS would run on other PC’s. I wonder if you will be able to sideboot Steam OS on the ROG and if it would still be better Optimized then whatever ROG does with it.
On the Ally since it's a computer. Might make it lot more smoother and faster with Windows 11 Tiny. It's slim down to almost core. Not much background programs. Anyway's can this be connected to tv?
I've been building computers for 20 years, tinkering with them since I was 10 or so back in 1985, Tandy, Commodore etc. Windows 11 isn't bad but for a handheld system I feel that it needs to be closer to plug and play. Just like with the Switch, I love the SD because even though you don't just put in a game and play, you download and launch it. Using just STEAM itself, this is extremely easy and sufficient. I'm tired of windows (personally), and I wouldn't want to deal with all of the patches, updates, log ins on different games and their platforms etc etc. So for me a Nintendo Switch and a SD are the way to go, and together make a good team for PC gaming, and Nintendo Exclusives with a few 3rd party titles here and there. I also like the old title selection from Steam, old 360 style games, also many that were on Xbox One and PS4. These reason to me as a 47 year old gamer are the big reasons the SD wins. And all of the cool adjustments you can make in game. Way cool.
Wow the battle lines are drawn and the fanatics are out in force!
"Zealot Deck Devotees" and the "New Tech Addicts" battle!!!!
Steam Vs. Ally is almost as vicious as Apply Vs Samsung..
Let's throw in GPD-Win 4 too!
Steam deck owner here and admit only had a few play sessions with the Ally in Best Buy.
Deal breaker for me with the Ally is how the sharp edges digs through my palm
The other thing I'd be concern with the Ally is it doesn't get as good battery life in lower tdp than the steam deck where I like to play because I don't like playing plugged in
both great systems though if you can afford it
food for thought for the cost of one Ally you can purchase 1 base model Steam Deck and a Nintendo Oled Switch
So I’m wanting to get a rog ally does it have battery packs you can put in it?
I'm a beginner in these types of devices but what I'm used to is the ps4 and xbox so if I wanna run both ps4 games and xbox in one of these handheld devices which one should I buy?
The ally I’m pretty sure it’s more compatible for Xbox streaming the the steam deck even tho a lot of the game is already on steam but it runs better on the ally
I'm leaning towards the ROG because it can play my games outside of Steam, and I can watch my movies on it as well with it being a W11 device. The battery life is my biggest sticking point though, and price.
Steam deck can play games outside of steam, it can also emulate, as far as movies go I haven't tried since I use a tablet.
Just checked yes u can use all the streaming apps
I love my steam deck although the Rog is pretty nice. Game on people.
i got my steam deck during the 10% off sale, the 64 GB version. I popped in an extra 1 TB SSD i already had from a different project so to me it feels like I got a 1 TB Steam deck for almost half the price of an ally. the ally looks really nice but ngl, the performance at 1080p is kind of a bummer. once they figure that out, i might pick one up.
Why? The reality is the steam deck is just outright more comfortable to hold, & the difference in performance is not worth the upgrade.
The biggest thing he doesnt mention in the video is that the deck shines at low TDP, essentially the asus gets worse battery life because they both use a 40wh battery.
So is it worth a 10%-50% increase in performance for a less comfortable handheld that lasts less? Imo no.
While most gamers can tell between a 30-60fps difference, on a small 7 inch screen 99.9% not gona have a clue if a screen is 60 or 120hz.
Would be interesting to see how the Asus runs steam os, but imo it still looks like shit to run windows 11.
@@johnfrankster3244 I just think it's cool, i moved to Linux as my daily driver over a year ago and don't have a windows laptop anymore. Not really into building PC's or gaming laptops either. I feel like maybe after a revision or two, something like the ROG ally can replace my need for a windows laptop or desktop. I feel like if you give it 45-60 watts, it could be a decent way to have a 1080p docked console experience in the living room with the bonus of going on the couch for 30-40 mins.
I wouldn't sell the deck. The track pads are too nice and kind of a deal breaker for me. Also I've heard gyro isn't supported on the ally yet either. So it has its drawbacks.
Just happy there's alternatives to building a nice rig these days without breaking the bank too much
@@johnfrankster3244 SD is better at low power but the Asus's 1080 and higher frame rates are amazing. I have both and play at home 90% of the time so I have found myself picking up the rog ally more... In my opinion it depends on wat you play, if you are vintage / emulator / $ challenged or mobile then go for the steam deck always , however AAA games the rog ally is the best choice.
@@mikezmac I'll stick AAA games for my PS5 while keeping classic games for my SD.
So many mistakes in this review, way more games are verified than 2000 on Steam deck. Was the biggest one
And just because it doesn't have a verified icon doesn't mean it don't work on the steam deck. To imply it is very misleading
You’re so right I totally agree…thats why he said “OVER 2000 games”
I’m pretty sure about 8,000 games are verified now
He is fat, so thats explains of it
What I don’t understand is why aren’t all games compatible for the Stream Deck from the start like it is supposed to be.
There is no winner. Both devices have different strengths for different situations. I wish reviews had more nuance instead of just declaring one a winner.
Yeah Steam deck is like a plug and play PC, while Asus has windows which is nice for people who actually play games that has EAC on, and also the problems with windows but that's another story.
Facts
The second a new Deck gets a better display or a new Windows handheld with the same quality display as the Ally with a bigger battery gets released the Ally will be moot. I have both, they’re fine. Neither are amazing.
What you described already happened. Its the AOKZOE A1 Pro and it's nowhere near as functional or affordable as the Ally. Also the new deck is also gonna be on linux and not coming for a long time
One thing a lot of people overlook with steam deck vs ally, is the steam decks ability to have an amazing FPS limiter that can hold the FPS at 40 FPS with minimal frame time along with lowering the screens Refresh Rate to 40Hz, you would be surprised how amazingly smooth 40 FPS can feel when its locked to 40Hertz with minimal frame time, its butter.
The Rog Ally's screen is between 60-120Hz and does not have the same variables the deck has for FSR and adaptive Sync.
Ally has vrr and fps limiters
I have fps and frame time settings on the ally. It’s in the ROG menu
Freesync range appears to be much lower than 60hz and the panel apparently supports as low as 48hz, all told this means you'll get smoother feeling framerates even at low fsp over the steamdeck
Rog ally if you want a PC experience, steam deck if you want a console like experience people not knowing this and buying this baffles me maybe do some research befor buying.
How's Steam "Big Picture" on the ROG Ally?
Could you do a comparison between both devices with COD MW 2 ?
The only downside of Rog Ally is that is running Windows which is much more source hungry than the SteamOS
For Steam Deck its (1280x800p) 1 024 000 pixels per frame to render and for ROG Ally its (1920x1080p) 2,073,600 pixels per frame which is double of pixel count. So thats why it looks so similar in terms of FPS. If you will set ROG to 1280x720p, you can easily hit monstrous fps boost, especially in AAA games.
Montrous battery drain💀
@@aegontargaryen1289 well yeah :D but u can still connect it to grid and if u war on the way, id set brightness of display to 1/4, resolution down as well as details to bare minimum.
An honest deck owner. Ive had a deck since day 1 and I love it but I have to give it to the ALLY.
Deck is better
Dood wtf is the point in the ASUS, when it runs on a 40wh battery same as the deck and feels less comfortable.
Even with 2d platformers its battery life will be shit, because unlike the deck its not low tdp optimised.
The Deck is dead, Long Live the ROG! (eeep)
@@johnfrankster3244 the steam deck battery isnt any better. I got an extra 15 mins of battery on the steam deck. Whoopdiedoo. I play my handhelds plugged in all the time anyway.
We're in 2023. There's no excuses for first gen devices to still have this type of thick bezel.
In the past Asus has dropped updates on devices before making them unusuable.
Optimization is key. Steam Deck wins every time. I really do like the ROG as it is practically a mini gaming computer. Well done by both.
yeah i would say we should wait for optimization but i think hardly any dev would optimised for it BEFORE it sells at least a few hundred thousand units
which probably wont happen anytime soon or probably ever unfortunately
I downloaded assassin’s creed origins from the steam store without downloading Ubisoft connect runs great few issues but nothing that serious just sound issues after putting it to sleep playing constantly but not a deal breaker
Steam Deck wasn't perfect at launch either. They kept on improving the software via updates and optimization. If Asus can pull that off in near future it's a clear winner because of its Raw power. They also have Microsoft's assistance. Who knows if Microsoft launces an operating system in near future specifically for handheld devices .
Thing is ASUS is not known for making good software. And they will move on from it by next year when they try to push you the Ally 2.
@@emilioriofrio7858 That's very true

Drivers will improve the ally as time goes by.
I saw one review where there was a huge difference from a software update. My only fear is windows gets updated and then that cripples this device until Asus can counter MS update.
Nice video
With no sign of steam deck coming to Australia, I might have to dive into this one
how come when playing FPS games on the steam deck that normally have aim assist for controllers there is none. I thought that was a little weird. Not sure if ally is any different.
Pc
The Ally seems good but I'm a bit of a Steam and Valve fanboy. I prefer their support and the whole experience of just booting up into SteamOS.
If Valve came out with a new Deck with slightly better performance, that'd be the ideal product for me.
Don’t understand fanboys the ROG ally is clearly a better product but for some reasons some prefer the Steam deck over it for me its all about the product not the brand.
@@jackbauer5455 As stated in my comment, it's not just the brand. In fact, it's mostly the SteamOS experience and Valves quality control and support. They provide the more refined experience.
I already own a powerful gaming PC, performance is not everything for a handheld.
Steamdeck 2.0 would be it for me. Both of those gen1 devices have their major flaws, like battery and the sticks. Can't wait for them to improve on their devices.
battery ?
Using the steamdeck it works fine for what i want proabably just wait for the steamdeck 2 now
To each their own but I have to give it to the Steam Deck based on my personal preferences. Kind of writing a book here but I’d like to share my thoughts because I can, lol, but keep in mind I’m just thinking about what I like about the Deck.
First, I’ve always preferred the PlayStation controller format with symmetrical controls over the asymmetrical Xbox style as it always felt more natural in my hand. I’d really like to see Valve take another swing at the Steam Controller using the general layout they have on the Deck.
I see no need for 1080p on such a small screen and I don’t find the additional processing power a benefit considering the drastically reduced battery life. I’m getting 3-4 hours play time at 7 watts on my deck when playing installed games and 4-6 hours when doing remote play, depending on screen brightness.
The additional back buttons (L/R 4&5) are an absolute must for me as most of the PC games I play are not controller friendly. I often find myself using the L/R 5 buttons as modifiers and binding the L/R 4 buttons to press action and modifier+ press for a different action, and will often add modifiers to several other buttons or triggers.
In the same vein, the touchpads are something that I don’t know if I could do without now that I’ve had them. I use them as radial menus, number lines, key binds, as a joystick for finer aiming, as mouse scroll wheel, a flick stick (nice for R6 when remote playing from PC against m&k players) or a hot bar. You can add up to 18 different actions to each trackpad if you are comfortable with utilizing both the press and the touch features for about 54 total actions on a single controller before introducing modifiers.
Another very interesting thing I recently found out is that the deck has some pretty clever coding going on for its controller. On R6:Siege PC you are unable to swap back and forth between m&k and controller when in a match, but on the Deck I’m able to swap back and forth seamlessly. It might be a niche thing that doesn’t really matter, but it does go to show just how much thought was put into this device and it’s controller interface.
Windows and anti-cheats are a non sequitur, IMO. The deck made it ridiculously easy to dual boot windows. The serviceable nature of the Deck allows for swapping for larger storage which is easily partitioned between SteamOS and Windows, and the interface drivers work very good. Keep windows on a 256GB microSD card and give it a partition for faster storage on the nVME drive for games with longer loading times and you are golden.
As a lifelong PC gamer, I’ve wanted to get away from windows as much as possible since Microsoft killed off 7, and SteamOS on Linux tickles that fancy. Maybe it is just me but I’m tired of Microsoft’s monopoly on PC gaming and their increasingly invasive telemetry “features”.
The Deck may not have the best screen or performance but it absolutely brings a lot of value to the table. Additionally, it is my opinion as an OG Steam guy with a 14 year old alt account, Valve saved PC gaming and has been one of the most consumer friendly companies I have ever had the pleasure of doing business with. ASUS, on the other hand, has seemed to do everything in its power to piss off its customers and tarnish its once good name over the last few years with horrible RMA experiences and some subpar products being released. I absolutely love the fact that I can easily get replacement parts for the Deck. Valve has also stated that they are exploring potential upgrade paths for better screens and processors moving forward.
If I want the best gaming experience, I will sit at my PC. Next best is remote play, I don’t know what Valve did to it but it is a lot better than it used to be because the latency is almost imperceptible. I’m no frameologist but it feels closer to my old 5ms delay monitor than my TV which has like a 20ms delay.
Xbox cloud gaming works pretty well, it does have hiccups from time to time but it is nice to have that library of games to mess around with from anywhere. PlayStation Remote via Chiaki works like a dream. I’ve been getting all of my old games and Switch games saved into ROMs with a controller that can map for anything, including N64 controls. As the infallible Todd Howard said, “It just works”.
Forgot to mention, this is a great review. Best and better are words of opinion so get what you like and don’t worry about who else has what. The fact that we can PC game from almost anywhere is incredible, and it is all in its infancy.
Are you talking about his review, or the papyrus you wrote ;).

Steam deck is also a handheld pc. That's all I used it for really. Docked pc and it ran just as good as my gaming pc surfing the web etc.
Now that the steam deck is on sale I'm leaning towards it.. but still I'm an Asus fan and don't know wich one to get😭
The price difference between the two when the steam deck is on sale like the high end model is 25% off is making me lean towards the steam deck but the Asus has the nicer screen and better performance. Tough choice. I feel like waiting for black Friday if there’s a little discount on the Ally.
I sold my steam deck for this device but after seeing all the issues with the ally it's best to wait. Also seeing how tedious the ally can be its made me appreciate the deck even more. Might end up going back to the deck or wait for the switch 2 reveal
@@sharinglungs3226 same thought, but the difference in resolution is minor for what I heard, plus if you run the ally at 1080p there's a little more battery drain so... I'm 99% sure to get the deck, but if you have money to spend the ally (with all the asus gadgets such as external GPU) it's probably the best, optimization aside
The gaming quality is better on the Ally. And also everything works just like on my desktop. No compatibility this and that
That’s wild yea he’s definitely on steam side because the steam deck is just a console to me , but my rog plays everythjng super well and even great in sometimes
Hmmm so most expensive steam deck is 650 and rog ally is 700. You claimed you expected more from the rog ally because it costs more.. 50 dollars more and to get way better performance for an extra 50 dollars I sure know which one I’m choosing
Unless you get the $399 SteamDeck, which has the same performance as the the most expensive one, both of which are on sale for less
I actually thought the steam deck was going to be the winner, but total curve ball at the end.

Controller as a unit: deck
Screen resolution:rog
Easy to use: deck
Os interface: deck
Game optimization:.deck
Windows base: rog

Winner due to future potential: Rog
All these other companies need to step up their game. The steam deck is already a pretty refined experience and it seems like competitors are cutting corners to compete
The real problem is the price so if prices drop then sales will skyrocket
one day handhelds will be better. longer battery life and better performance
I do smell some bias here. And I don’t even like one more than the other so I don’t think I’m making it up.
u mean u do smell my FART all the way up in your nose because u know my FART smell like peppermint candy 😃
People need to realize that batteries are batteries and not upgraded every year with new devices. The more power the less time, to have 2 hours of battery for a full blown pc is amazing. People who are buying this thinking it’s a better switch should not buy it unless they have pc gaming experience.
Just look at all the vr headsets. They don’t last all day either.
Buying Ally solely because Steam decided not to sell in my country[Many gamers but relatively small market for this kind of stuff] and Asus took the risk, I will reward them for it.
because your country is just absolutely SUCK…..AMERICA the greatest country on earth and u know it 😃🇺🇸
Glad I waited on the steam deck the ally almost came out of nowhere I’m happy with it
Exactly, the ally blows the Deck out the water with performance. We game to play at the best settings possible. Why on earth would you buy a Deck over an Ally lol. You must be missing some brain cells if you do.
My SteamDeck can't even play sons of the forest, yet the Ally smashes the ball out the park with it.

I mean.. the ROG ally sells here for 5k riyal (around 1250 dollars), meanwhile the deck goes for around 2k (around 500 dollars) so it's a bit unfair tbh..
It all comes down to price. The extra cost to buy an Ally is just not worth it for me.
Ally SD card issue is a death blow. No recovery from this. Poor design, more design flaws will manifest I’m sure of it. I am returning mine, steam deck ultra reliable in comparison. Windows 11 sucks, if I’m gonna have to deal with it rather deal with it in desktop form.
Deck couldnt even out a 90hz lcd? Thats rough
I have steamdeck and bought rog ally becuase the hype. It has a great screen and all but the steam deck is a better experience overall. Rerurning the Ally to Bestbuy.
Yeah, I use my Steam Deck more. I like the track pads, auto resume, and button layout better. Also like overall design of the Steam Deck better too.
Lol how are you gonna compare 1080p fps 7:36 to steam deck at 720p at 720p the ally blows the steam deck away and it plays all games not limited like the steam deck
There is no winner in this. And ppl calling this the steamdeck killer.. they are completely wrong. The steam deck .. steam os.. the ally.. a mobile gaming pc.. mostly a handheld laptop. What it comes down to , which one is more stable.. and what client do you play mostly. Multiplatform .. maybe better off with the ally... mostly steam.. then steamdeck.. but which one is the most stable is the one you are going after. Not to mention.. steamdeck's edge in this.. REPAIRABILITY.
It just comes down to preference
I 100% agree. I think the rog Ally and the Steam deck are both tied in first place. What sets them apart is the os and screens. Besides that, they are super similar. I think they are both fantastic options though, and one isn't above the other.
Agreed. I love my Steam Deck. The Ally looks good but I see no need to spring for it, but those touchpads and extra back buttons are a huge deal for me now that I’ve grown accustomed to it.
Before modifiers you can have something like 54 actions if you’re willing to use both touch and press functionality on the touchpads for number lines, radial wheels, scroll menus and even key binds.
Just my take.
@@inferno7528 Exactly. It would be like comparing a car to a truck. Of course some people are going to say the car is better. And some are going to say the truck is better. Each will point to their advantages as to why, but what it boils down to is what does the user need? Some people need trucks for hauling stuff or where they live. And some people need cars because they are in big cities and need to get around better. It doesn't make one better than the other. Just different needs for different users.
Took my Asus rog back to Bestbuy, rog is not comfortable worst battery life and windows is terrible.
This comment should be on top.
Did the same thing love my deck
with the lack of being able to repair and upgrade on top of the asymmetrical controls... no thank you.
Just picked up steam deck that's on sale for summer sale so even bigger value.
The lack of touch pads, running windows over a custom os that is properly optimises and price are the major downsides.
Me too, ordered my Steam Deck 512 gb today
The os isn't "properly optimized" it is a Linux distro that emulates windows through proton. That is why a lot of games will not run on Steam Deck. Where the Ally is a gaming laptop in handheld factor so it is a windows 11 pc.
@@DarthCuda by optimization I was more referring to power envelope, ram usage and disk space.
Which is why the Ally preforms worse at lower wattage caps.
900p is the way to go wit therog ally
Why do all of these reviews glance over the battery life and don't mention any specifics? The Ally seems to get about half the battery life of the deck. That's not close to the same.
Also, it's not $649 vs $699; it's $399 vs. $699. Add a $40 micro SSD to the deck and it has the same storage as the Ally, so it's really $439 vs. 699 with over $250 saved getting a deck.
It depends on the game though and the quality. On a big AAA PC game, the steam deck runs a bit more but it’s almost the same
The $399 Steam Deck has an EMMC chip which are much slower than an SSD and have very short lifespans. Also with how Steam Deck uses Proton, it has to cache everything. The 64gb storage fills up full after installing just a couple games, even if they are on the SD card. Plenty of users all over Steam Deck subreddit complaining about this. So no, the $399 model is nothing compared to the $699 model.
@@guitarskooter For $40 you can get a 512GB micro SSD. For about $100 you can buy a 1TB internal SSD to replace the 64gb model. Anyone who knows what they're doing buys the $399 base model and upgrades from there to save an arm and a leg.
@@jeffreyali1456 It does depend on the game, and usually it turns out that the Deck gets about double the battery life. Sometimes it's more. Sometimes it's a bit less. However, if you're 100% absolutely maxing out the Asus it's about an hour of battery life whereas if you're absolutely 100% maxing out the Steam Deck it's more like an hour and 40 minutes. That's not 'close to the same'. That's a fairly substantial difference.
@@LawlessNate for me, if I’m maxing out the deck, I get about a hour and a half, and with the Rog Ally, I can do the same with some tweaking in the settings here and there. For low wattage games I’d say the deck has the advantage.

1080p will come to SteamDeck 2, bet....
for sure
I can't access gamepass on the deck so.... no deck for me
The only issue I have with steam deck is steam I cant just install any game I want I have to pay for games from steam with windows I have alot more options
I have steam deck.its good.but I go for ROG Ally
going by your review the ally wins in every section. so im guessing you a value fan boy
Where are the timestamps? what the heck is that background music? The video quality is too lows for Tom
Xbox game pass is the difference for me
Yeah Ally for the win, I feel like he half baked the testing. One thing I havent heard ANY and I mean ANY Tech reviewers mention is to…Go into the Armoury Crate, then to settings, then GPU Settings..Turn that Vram from 4GB (default) to 8GB! Double the performance, No screen tearing or dropping of frames! Problem Solved and Steam Deck go ahead and take the Retirement Crown!!
Lol imagine stating that the Windows machine loses because of compatibility. I own both and the Steam Deck has far more compatibility issues. Good luck playing any game with anti-cheat on Steam Deck. All of my EA games purchased on Steam require the EA app, but guess what - the EA app breaks every time it updates, forcing you to jump through a ton of hoops to get it working. Some games that used to work, do not work anymore. Unless you stick to just Steam verified games, that's about all you're getting, or you're going to have to jump through tons of hoops to get a 3rd party launcher going and hope it doesn't break. On the contrary, my Ally has played every single game I've installed on it so far with no issues.
Dude if you’re playing at 60fps, the 120hz doesn’t matter anyways. This dude has no actual knowledge of how displays work
To be fair some games you can play at higher fps. My friend told me MW2 averages 90fps on his Ally. I prefer my Steam Deck as well personally
There are tons of game that can run at 120+. If you exclusively play mainstream AAA titles, stick to console.
The ROG is a game changer but is green.. Microsoft and third parties have a lot to do to make a windows HH to work at its best so it’s like you aren’t getting the best out of the unit.
The Deck was born to be obsolete at some point ( no egpu support seen to that) Linux gaming is also pretty new but at least they are working on it.
Sure it’s a handheld.. but for me I’m lucky to own a gaming pc too so handheld on the go (and I travel a lot so that’s something I use/need) and when I get home the thought of docking into a better gpu and playing on the big screen means I don’t need a bulky tower 🤷🏻♂️
Well I guess that depends on what cpu you have in your rig…. My rig has quite an old cpu but an rtx380ti gpu and it is definitely cpu bound and the CPU’s installed in these held-helds would actually be an upgrade in my case 🤷🏻♂️ but I would have to check the numbers and run a few benchmarks but that’s my gut on it.
I don’t know why people are comparing this with Steam Deck. What about the other handheld. Ayaneo, Aokzoe. Are they not the competition?
Smaller companies, so not really to the average buyer. Good point though.
They aren't.
Battery life shouldn’t be a concern for these. It’s about portability and moving around the house, not long play times for hours in a car uplugged. Something like this could just be plugged in all over the place and it would work great.
I respect both, especially the steam deck but let’s be real here that Asus is no joke!! I just bought one today, just blown away how good it is!
So pathetic... Nice of paying 700 dollar while african starved to death
@@MrGpb93lmao what
Hmmm... maybe i just stick on my Nintendo Switch first... 😅
I'm running the Ally as a dual PC setup with my already dual monitor setup now for $700. I can sync my pcs and I can take it on the go when I want.. not even talking about the way better 1080p gaming with better fps. I've been waiting for this! and can't wait for more companies to make better windows handhelds. If I wanted a better Nintendo switch, I would've got that. I just think you can't compare these. If Deck owners don't know how to operate a computer just say that😂
Nothing to do with skill on operating a OS. Windows is just notoriously shit.
You literally need to know linux, which is far more functional and complex than Windows, to use the Steam Deck optimally. If you don't know how to operate a computer, just say that.
Not really agreeing with the 60fps on 120hz comment. There is a chance of having micro stutters or no visual difference at all but playing on a high refresh rate on low fps don't make it look better.
Also there are tons of unverified games on the steam deck that works on steam deck just fine. You need to research all this more imo
Strong hand
I actually prefer the ally haven't touched my steamdeck since the 13th.
you look like a white version of stevo the madman
Asus ROG Ally 800 euros in Finland... eww. Steam deck with summer sale 540 euros.
😎
Steam Deck fanboys are the worst 😂😂
Deck owners really don't care because Steam benefits regardless. However you have to be more charitable with its advantages and disadvantages. There are many other videos that prefer Ally that did a better job at that
Seems the opposite to me, the rog ally fans shit on the Steam Deck, take arguments to the next level or say things like "The SD is trash now" "The SD is obsolete now" "RIP steam deck." Very harsh group of people.
Steam Deck all the way. That white isn't going to stay white forever.
Im buying a black third party shell im specialist in handhelds i fix them :)
So they're portable potatoes.
