My Grandad, Michael Nugent was stretcher bearer to James Connolly. He was imprisoned & served time in Frongoch, Wales.

Everywhere in Europe 1916 is symbolic of extreme loss and suffering. In Ireland it’s celebrated. The rising was a mistake - not only because of the timing and the reaction it caused, but because it led to partition, mass movements of people, division, civil war and the troubles we still deal with today. If the Easter rising would not have taken place I am convinced Ireland would have remained united - and would have become peacefully independent.
