    Thanks Glenn .. first time I have grasped the differences and the way the dual hat operates. Excellent training video .. keep 'em coming.

    My biggest gripe with dmr is people never leave any time between transmissions. I mean never. No matter how many DMR network sites and forums or tg webpages constantly reminding people to leave a few seconds between them.... People still hit that ptt as fast as they can. I always have to go to my dashboard and disconnect the tg that way. Occasionally I get lucky and the entire conversation is over but not usually. I love ham radio but I will never understand how certain people fight to hit the ptt over anyone else to say absolutely nothing most of the time lol. Just be patient and let other people get a transmission in on occasion. It will eventually come back around and you can go off on whatever crazy tangent you are dying to say on the airways nuts! 😂

    Very helpful and helps me understand it all properly. I really was confused about functionality with the dual hotspots.
    My Wouxun HT KG-UV9P"X" (new model) is on backorder, FM tri-band only but I'll also be saving up for the Anytone D878UVII Plus HT to get later in the year. I also want to chat with friends overseas on DMR but one is on DStar.
    I want to build a dual hotspot with a large touchscreen but you said you are working on a new hotspot with the AMBE and a power bank that I'm keen on. Still early days. I sit for my foundation on the 20th March. How many month are you looking at to get a working unit out to market? I'll probably still build a dual hotspot with the 3.5 inch touchscreen anyway, for fun and to learn. Best way to learn is to fail. Lol

    With duplex, could I run one of the chips on DMR in simplex, and the other chip on YSF in simplex? Or should I just get another hotspot altogether? I have both kinds of HTs and would like to not have to reconfigure every time I want to change networks/HT.

      Me too! Need to know. I don't think there's multiple time slots for system Fusion i would imagine you use timeslot 1 for yaesu and 2 for DMR

    • @MattCoversTech
      @MattCoversTech Před 7 měsíci

      Having played around with this for a while, I don't think it is possible. I don't think it's a limitation of the hotspot. I'm running a Pi-Star on a Raspberry Pi 3b, with WPSD firmware and you can indeed enable both YSF and DMR even in simplex. The problem is from what I can tell, both Brandmeister and YSF aren't friendly about sharing one device to access both networks. I ended up running two hotspots, with one for each service. Honestly this keeps things cleaner when it comes to configurations and dashboards. It also allows you to monitor both systems simultaneously on different HTs etc. It's not as if the hotspot has two transmit frequencies, it only has one even in Duplex, so you would have to figure out a way which service would take precedence over the other etc. With two separate hotspots, they can work at the same time, on different frequencies.

    Great video Glenn, can a duplex hotspot be configured as a normal simplex hotspot?

      @vk4nga  Před 3 lety

      Hi Simon, yes it can. In that case only one radio chip and antenna is used.

    In your video, at 4:40 you say "if you're on Brandmeister everything is on TS2 so you don't need a duplex hat." A knowledgeable ham friend of mine (W8IE) says Brandmeister uses both TSs. He says "Brandmeister can use both time slots, it depends on the hotpot you have. I have a duplex and a simplex for dmr..." I told him about your video to which he responded "Yes, if you have a simplex spot, you can only use slot 2, if you have a duplex spot you can use both."
    Begs the question, why are you saying "if you're on Brandmeister everything is on TS2 so you don't need a duplex hat"?

    • @awesomedn
      @awesomedn Před 2 lety +1

      Exactly. I have a duplex hotspot and it works with both TS on Brandmeister.
      But there’s a catch. Brandmeister used to drop dynamic groups on both TS when 4000 called on either TS. This allowed duplex hotspots to have an advantage over simplex hotspots - ability do disconnect from ragchew on one TS by calling 4000 on other TS.
      This is not he case any more. A lot of repeater users complained on being disconnected by someone on another TS. So from the repeater perspective this behavior is a bug. And Brandmeister fixed it. You can’t disconnect from TS1 by calling 4000 on TS2, or vice versa.
      The only way to drop dynamic groups during active QSO is via Brandmeister API via Pi-Star, mobile app or Brandmeister site.
      I’m currently working on alternative solution - a lightweight service running on pi-star hotspot’s, listening for RF calls and dropping dynamic groups on times slot when I key 4000

    Can a duplex hotspot act like a local DMR repeater? In particular, my wife and I are both hams. Can we be in opposite ends of the house and A) can we hear each other checking in to the same net on the same time slot? B) Can I be in a conversation on TS1 and here on TS2?

    Awesome video, thanks for taking the time. I have a semi related question about the duplex hotspot and that very same radio. In the US we have the TGIF network which works well in both time slots just as you have yours setup. My question is about the radio. Did you create a digital contact and attach it to individual channels for each TG you want to access? For instance if you turn the knob on your radio and key up on another TG it changes in Pistar? Sorry this is only partially related to your video but...... Kind of close. 😁

    • @vk4nga
      @vk4nga  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Dustin, yes that's exactly how my radio is setup. Also setup one RX group per channel that matches the talk group. That way the radio only hears the talk group you are on.
      Cheers Glenn.

    Hi all, I have the 878uv..... and I have one single issue I'm not sure how to resolve, although I have this feeling it is probably easy to fix........ EXAMPLE: when using the 91 TG (WW) or any other for that matter and then going to another channel to talk, I cannot talk on the channel I'm currently on if any other channel is being used...? any ideas and also I can see the strength meter going as the other channel is having a conversation as though I'm still somehow connected to that channel even though I have tuned away from it and am trying to talk somewhere else........... Thanks for any help, W2AIQ

  • @dreupen
    @dreupen Před rokem

    Please realize that Ham's hack the use of the term simplex. This leads to people taking it beyond a redefine. For example, your definition of duplex is completely wrong. It is possible to operate duplex with tx & rx on the same frequency. This takes a more expensive radio, one with two transceivers. Wee we operate on repeaters we are operating half-duplex. The is the same as operating peer to peer on a single frequency. To operate true simplex, just turn on your auto's FM stereo. That's true simplex.

    • @vk4nga
      @vk4nga  Před rokem

      Hi and thanks for taking the time to correct me. I'm no expert on the subject, but my video needs to be taken in context of common hotspot terminology, particularly if operating on DMR. Here's an idea, why don't you take the time to record a video so people are further informed.

    • @dreupen
      @dreupen Před rokem

      @@vk4nga Yes, it is unfortunate that the miss use has become "common" for part of Amateur Radio. Note, for HF operations the poor terminology is not used, but rather the correct term of "split mode operations". I am not criticizing your use of the common kludge, but criticizing your extension in falsely defining "duplex". Yes, I'm on a mission to point this out. Fortunately, the plague exists only with VHF/UHF operators. I could post a video, but the reality is that throwing water on the fire is more effective. And besides, comments help you regarding the CZcams algorithm.
