    Soundgarden was a long-time Seattle hard rock band that became known for pioneering “Alternative/Grunge” music along with Pearl Jam and Nirvana, although most of them would consider themselves just to be hard rock bands.
    Their lead guitarist and drummer recently recorded an album with the bassist from Nirvana and several different singers called “3rd Secret.”
    Chris later formed Audioslave with the musicians from Rage Against the Machine. He also sang the song “You know My Name” for the James Bond movie “Casino Royale.”

      The whole grunge era of the nineties was one grim song after another. And millions of kids bought into it. So sad.

    • @Bramble451
      @Bramble451 Před 5 měsíci

      @@michaelbirke6050 if you listen to the kids themselves, Grunge gave voice to what they were already feeling, not the other way around. They couldn't find a place in the synth heavy pop music of the 80s. Grunge is essentially a revival of 70's metal with lyrics that (while frequently insensible because of how metaphorical, poetic, or personal they are) moved away from the love songs that they couldn't relate to, towards the start of the social justice movements that are still here today.

      @@Bramble451 Thank you for your thoughtful and introspective comment. I do feel sad for the nineties generation. Question is why that generation was feeling abandonment, loneliness and depression and did the recording industry genuinely care or just feed it by perpetuating it by a rare and unexpected commercial success of Nirvana’s “Nevermind”. Please don’t try to convince me that the underlying motivation was quote “social injustice and change”. Name me one thing Rage Against The Machine changed except their bank account. It was all about aesthetics. Tom Morrello storming back and forth sure looked angry. Even the most successful band to come out of the nineties, Pearl Jam, talked the talk but in the end did they change any mindsets? Eddie Vetter just became friends with Bruce Springsteen. Greed and money always rears its ugly head. Bookend the grunge era with Linken Park. One doesn’t even have to close one’s eyes to see the darkness. Tragically Curt Cobain, Chester Bennington and the singer whose band and video started this conversation Chris Cornell all took their own lives. That is not by coincidence. There is a reason that many comments on CZcams from people lament that they never had a chance to experience the music of the sixties and early seventies. You want to know why? It’s what is sadly missing in grunge. Creativity. Nirvana set the tone and provided the blueprint which countless bands followed to the delight of the record companies. Consequently that’s what that generation was fed. That’s where my original use of the word sad comes from. No I didn’t grow up in the nineties but I did listen to alternative/grunge/metal on the radio and very rarely heard anything hopeful, encouraging or positive. I’m putting this all in context after listening to sixty years of music. I don’t disagree with your comment, I just hope you can see from my perspective. It’s even more ironic that the comment section of Diane’s video starts out with comments about suicide and prevention. Honestly, this is the first time I’ve ever seen this.I sincerely hope that she limits her first listens from this era. Talk about karma. I’m looking up at the top of my screen and she’s first listening to Alice In Chains “Down in a Hole”. Why did Layne Staley’s name come to mind? See, I’m getting caught up in it. Sorry. Will try to end this on a positive note. Stay safe and well.🎸✌️☮️😊

    The name "Soundgarden" refers to a public sculpture here in Seattle (Soundgarden's home town) at Sand Point which is made of dangling things that make a musical sound when the wind blows. Actually, "Black Hole Sun" is also a sculpture in Seattle in Volunteer Park.

    Cornell was one of the breakout front an and singers of the area that I now live in, the PNW, Seattle was the scene he was in part born in. I still remember the night the news came across that he died(by his own hand as it was later reported). I still remember him just showing up on the local talk show The Men's Room. Not because he was promoting a new album, or an ongoing tour, or really anything else. He literally was just in the area and wanted to sit down and "talk to the guys". Guys that he got to know over the years and wanted to spend time with. That was like a month before his dose was publicised and all of Seattle went through a "Black Day" (I was there that night. Somber puts it lightly to say the least). I still remember trying to verify that he actually died, then how he died, then processing it, because it pissed he off, given I at an early age also tried to off myself and knew what that process was (for me at least) like. The article that I, in fairness, hastily wrote, is still out there explaining most of this; I just don't know if it's appropriate to post it here even if I can. Short story being, it never had to happen. He said himself, ON STAGE, "I feel sorry for the next show", and NO ONE PICKED UP ON THAT. Pretty sure at 10 I had less signs than that, and had my younger brother hadn't Runa cross me I might not be here to say as much.
    I apologize. Didn't mean to get into a rant. It s a good song, one I've performed quite a few times. Never actually saw the music video though, that was... interesting to say the least. Glad you enjoyed it.

    Definitely not just a product of a corporate think-tank. Soundgarden was the first grunge band to sign a major record deal though. They would have been the face of grunge if their early stuff wasn't so incredibly heavy that it just couldn't possibly cross over into mainstream. Superunknown is still quite dark and brooding as well, but there's significantly more pop sensibility to it and songs like "Black Hole Sun" coupled with multiple issues surrounding other grunge bands at the time propelled them into the spotlight as the biggest name of the genre left standing in '94. As noted in the quote you read, Cornell wasn't particularly happy with that however and saw the superficial nature of it all for what it really was.

    My favorite Soundgarden song! I grew up in the 80s with MTV so we were used to crazy videos, doesn't affect how I hear the music, but for some it can distract from the incredible music & vocals. Amazing song.

      Honestly, it's videos like this one that made me just not watch videos for 90s bands. I (personally) am one of those people you mention who finds them just so goofy that they take away from the amazing music. This video is so typically 90s! The only videos that I really like from that era are Tool's weird ones by Adam, but I avoid them as well at first, because they're just so distracting! Adam's little art projects with no obvious connection to the songs!
