I love this idea of yours!
I once lived in an old house with problematic septic system. The full tank would back up into the bathtub (not so bad) but also leak around the toilet drain wax ring onto the floor (so bad). Of course the previous owners put carpet! So I bought a water detector alarm and put it behind the toilet. It would sound like a smoke alarm if the carpet got wet. It served us well until, ironically, the battery died.

Then found out that 70+ years of piss on the floors from boys splattering and even the smell of stool in the girls bathroom had so penetrated the marble it was worthless for re-sale.

i just had an idea. you know looms and spinsters wheels have those footpedals to keep them running. I wonder if you could make use of such a foot powered device to power a HEPA filter for doing sterile labwork in front of. I see you say they use the carbon filter in aircons or whatever, but squirrel cage blowers are pricey and tke a lot of electricity, ad can blow out / fuse. Would be SO cool to be able to have a foot powerd laminar flow desk where sterile air is blowing over the workspace in the lab to do sterile mushroom tissue culture where the footpedal through some mechanism creates constant wind pressure through the HEPA filter for sterile airflow on the desk, i.e. laminar flow hood for sterile tissue culture in a laboratory. Also I wonder if it's possible to make a High Efficiency Particular Air filter at home with reticulated carbon foam or something? The problem is the micrometer size at which or through which particles are let through, to prevent contams landing on the er, shroom myceium? The idea is to obtain a pure tissue culture to propagate the dears. You could have two pedals so you are like basically exercising while powering your laminar flow desk, instead of wasting a ton of electricity and also having to replac a squirrel cage blower, as that HEPA filter requires a strong current of air to force a consistent flow of sterile air through the high efficiency particulate air filter, so would love to know..
