I kinda think it is possible it was an accident but so on we were led to believe it has to be a murder or a suicide. Definitely also thought Daniel made up that story about his father in the car to try to save his mother

I believe it was an accident because Snoop is used to dropping whatever they are playing fetch with wherever, because Daniel can't see the item when he returns it. What is the first scene we get in this movie?
