Funny you mention studying life and death problems- honestly, between my first few games of go and getting an online app, I spent close to a year JUST doing Tsumegos, kind of as fun puzzles completely removed from the game of go.
So I’d at least looked at (I doubt I actually solved more than 1 in twenty without looking at the solution) over a thousand before playing ten actual games.
