Take this from a 68 year old retired Navy vet. Your reaction is spot on and from your heart. Harry is a long lost treasure indeed. He passed too young. We watch your reactions at the VFW on a big screen. I salute you.
wonderful guy, humanitarian, a great spirit. I saw him perform when i was 18 yrs old. He came out a side door after, as I came around a corner: I met him and we chatted, just a regular guy.
I checked the comments and did not find anyone telling you that Martin Tubridy-from Connecticut-was the inspiration for Mr Tanner. There is a Ytube video of him singing this song with Harry's brother Steve Chapin and his band. Martin also has a Facebook page and a website where his songs can be downloaded. He actually sang at Carnegie Hall and kept singing at local shows, regardless of what the critics said. There's a book about him that shows a poster from his Carnegie Hall concert Thank you for the reaction, I discovered Harry almost 50 years ago and saw him a few months before his passing. He stood outside the concert hall with his young son Josh, among trash cans in a dark alley, and signed anything that was bought. Proceeds went to his World Hunger Foundation and I still cherish the items I brought home. I was at the first of two shows and almost bought a ticket for the second one-I still wish I had done so. I wrote concert reviews at a small, free music paper for 10 years and hope you understand this is not intended as critical but Chapin is prounounced like Haypin. Thank you again for the reaction and your words about not dropping music any longer. Each of us should pursue whatever makes us whole, regardless of whether we are received like Harry Chapin or Mr Tanner. It appears that you don't have to release recordings to let music make you whole and I wish you a continued lifetime of enjoyment with it
Most people face disappointment in life in terms of unfulfilled dreams. Find another dream and don't dwell on the past. Life is meant to keep on moving. Never give up and be proud of accomplishments on a new path.
One of my favorite childhood memories is of the local grocer, Chuck, singing as he puttered about his store. He sang from a place of pure joy. He had a wonderful voice and his happiness was contagious. Teens loved him, little kids, older adults... everybody. Singing kept him young. It kept him at peace and kept him grounded. He sang of his faith but also sang of the sale on apples and what time the delivery truck arrived that morning. The store felt so quiet and lonely after he passed. Singing was not Chuck's career, no he owned a grocery store. It made him happy. He sang from his heart and he sang from his soul. It made him whole. I can't imagine who Chuck would have been if someone had ground this part of his spirit in the dirt. This isn't about disappointment. It's about losing a piece of your very being.
The song was made great by the incredible baritone voice of Bib John Wallace as played the part of Mr. Tanner. Harry knew it too. He would not sing the song without his best backup man, Big John
I highly recommend Chapin’s song “Sniper (studio version).” It will shock you. You have never heard a song like it. The lyrics are astonishing. Then you can do Cats in the Cradle and The Rock by Chapin. By the way, his last name is pronounced Chay-pin.
Rips your guts out, don't it? Any artist can relate. We get it, don't we? Ouch. Dang, Harry was great. Check out, 'W.O.L.D.' maybe. Another personal fave from back when I became aware of him and fell under the spell of his gift for connection and storytelling. Cheers, mate. ✊🏼🫤🎶🔥❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊

He has a song called The Shortest Story and it also could be called the saddest.

@@alanpeterson4939 Sniper live from soundstage might be the most incredible live performance I’ve ever seen.
